Andrew Bynum. In 07-08, I thought he was going to be the best Center since Shaq. He looked potentially unstoppable with that size, skill. and athleticism.
He was the best center in the league for a few years. Too bad his knees are made of glass.
I still would have taken Dwight or Yao.
How good do you think a Bynum without knee problems would have been?
He's still 33 years old Crazy to think how soon he had to retire.
He'd probably be the league's best big man for the 2010 decade.

IIRC, I was very excited to acquire any notable talent above what we had. Seems like we were in a very dry spell as far as talent acquisitions.
But the immediate problem for me, and if iirc the board in general, was the amount of years that raised the alarms. The signings were fine at the time, it was the amount of contractual years that most knew was a mistake, but most also knew they would not have signed w/o those years.

i was okay with the deng signing. young team needed a vet, knew we had to overpay as a lottery team. Mozgov made no sense whatsoever.

We were desparate for talent.

Exactly. Plus not being on top of the amnesty situation and wishfully thinking that the league would keep allowing amnesties.

Magic getting rid of DLO to get rid of Mosgov's deal set us on our way to Lebron and AD, so as bad as he did in th end, he ultimately did the right move in the beginning to get us to Chip #17, and hopefully #18.

Better than Anthony Davis, Embiid, and Jokic?
It’s crazy that he slipped all the way to 10th in that draft. Injuries and all, you can make the case that he should have gone third. If he hadn’t had knee problems, maybe even #1 over Chris Paul.
To answer the question, I had a few:
Mike brown and his freaking dvds. Got me thinking we be good defensively. I also watched the Dlo sports science and was always looking for the highlight passing.
Overall, Kobe. The man would make believe a game winner was coming and that we'd come back on the Mavs. I never doubted him. Ever.
After watching the sports science on D Rus, I thought he was going to be the new and improved Curry. Ball was the next Kidd and Bi was KD...
Crazy to think none of them came anywhere close to that. They are all above average players but that's it.
Pre-NBA comparisons are often of the best version of what you hope someone can become. They are rarely reached. That having been said I did want to stick up a little bit for those guys, Russell, BI, and also Randle are All-Stars. Lonzo probably fits in to the description. He's been disappointing.
