this will be a HUGE step back as far as not discriminating against someone. Credit profiles are not perfect but they are the best systematic way to rate everyone objectively. If you cant do that then landlords and property managers will only have their perceptions(biases) to go off of.

Doesn’t work that way. Seattle has other laws that cover that. And you have it backward, it’s the credit checks they use to discriminate, and they don’t rate everyone objectively. They rate people based on measures that favor the middle class, which is more white. The poor and minorities get screwed by the rating system, predatory lending, and the entire financial structure. Because it’s designed that way.

Im African American and I dont see credit checks as discrimination. I know its not perfect but being able to see a persons credit habits is invaluable. Yes middle class people have better credit in general than lower class but rentals are in different class neighborhoods as well. I currently own nearly 10 out of state rentals in different class neighborhoods... my rentals in C class neighborhoods attract lower income tenants so my credit thresholds adjust accordingly, In more middle class areas I have stricter credit requirements. Basically the same income class people compete for the same types of homes so income cant be an excuse to why one person has worst credit than the other.
And overall this is a dangerous trend of trying to offload issues onto the "big bad landlords" instead of the government taking responsibility of the mess they created by giving people a greenlight to not pay their rent without consequences.

But that’s not what they’re doing at all, now is it?
