Because Friedman takes more pleasure in nickel and dime other teams, and operates with a small market team mindset. Kind of like Mitch Kupcake.

Good moves by the Padres, wonder if we will counter with trades / signings of our own.

We just acquired Cleavinger

[Jeff Passan] Three-way trade with the Dodgers, Phillies and Rays.

Phillies get hard-throwing lefty reliever Jose Alvarado from TB.

Dodgers get lefty Garrett Cleavinger from Phillies.

Rays get infielder Dillon Paulson and a PTBNL from Dodgers.

Jesus, what are the Padres doing? Should we be worried about them?

Padres are the 2nd best team in the NL right now.

They had offense, defense and a bullpen. Their weakness was starting pitching and they just shored that up as well.

They still have a strong farm to make more moves this offseason or at the trade deadline.

They are absolutely a threat.

I'm just a little worried how our starters will fare against theirs. Our young pitchers showed out in the playoffs but we're going to probably have to lean on them even more this season.

Whoever wins the division has a huge advantage this year.

They’ll go back to that one game wild card play-in game where anything can happen.

Is Darvish really an ace? Sure he was great this year, but that was only in 12 starts. I don’t doubt that he can upgrade their rotation. But I would wait to see if he has another dominant season before concluding he is really that great.

Even Snell hasn’t been great outside of 2018 and he doesn’t pitch many innings, but I am really impressed when I see him in the postseason.

I wouldn't be happy if we paid him something like $100MM over 5 years, which seems to be his market, at least. Second basemen often fall off a cliff around 32-33, and he turns 33 next July.

This is from a few days ago but the Padres also got this Korean SS

Quote:
The San Diego Padres have agreed to a deal with Korean infielder Ha-seong Kim, reports Dennis Lin of The Athletic.

It's a four-year, $25-million deal, according to Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Five other teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays - who reportedly offered Kim at least a five-year contract - were interested in the 25-year-old.

Kim owns a career slash line of .294/.373/.493 with 133 home runs over seven seasons in the KBO. He hit a career-high 30 homers in 138 games last year.

Though Kim has exclusively played shortstop and third base over the last couple of seasons, the Padres plan to use him primarily at second base with Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado already on the roster, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

That would likely result in Jake Cronenworth moving from second to left field, but there may be more moves coming from San Diego, Sherman notes.

I’m still amazed at how the Padres kept all their top prospects. They basically landed Clevinger, Darvish and Snell and only giving up 1 top prospect. I remember when we tried to get Kluber from the Indians and the price tag was something ridiculous.

Quote:
They’re going all-out to win, landing two of the game’s best pitchers, Blake Snell and Yu Darvish, in recent trades that somehow preserved the club’s precious farm system.

(Six of their top seven prospects, as rated by Baseball America, survived that spree.)

Quote:
PADRES-INDIANS TRADE

Padres get:
RHP Mike Clevinger,
OF Greg Allen,
Player to be named

Indians get:
C Austin Hedges,
1B/OF Josh Naylor,
RHP Cal Quantrill,
SS Gabriel Arias (No. 7 Padres prospect),
INF Owen Miller (No. 11),
LHP Joey Cantillo (No. 9)

Turner seeks a four-year contract, according to people with knowledge of the situation. The Dodgers don’t want to give him a deal longer than two years.

........ but the Dodgers don’t want to commit more than two years to a 36-year-old third baseman whose mobility has appreciably diminished in recent seasons.

Quote:
But signing LeMahieu would come at a steep price. He is expected to command a lucrative contract of at least four years. That would vault the Dodgers over the $210-million competitive balance tax line for 2021 unless they shed salary elsewhere. The Dodgers would pay a 20% tax on all overages after not surpassing the threshold the last three seasons.

Quote:
At least four veteran third basemen are available via trade, according to a person with knowledge:

Kris Bryant,
Eugenio Suárez,
Mike Moustakas and
Kyle Seager.

Moustakas and Seager don’t fit for the Dodgers because they’re left-handed hitters. That leaves Bryant and Suarez.

Quote:
Bryant is five years younger, but the Darvish deal suggests the Dodgers could acquire another All-Star-caliber player at a discounted rate a year after adding Mookie Betts in a similar situation. Trading for star players, evidently, is the new market inefficiency.

Quote:
Suárez is also 29. He doesn’t have Bryant’s resume, but he’s emerged as a top power hitter with the Cincinnati Reds. His 124 home runs since 2017 are tied with Nolan Arenado for fourth in the majors behind Mike Trout, Nelson Cruz and J.D. Martinez.

Another appealing aspect: Suárez has at least four years left on a team-friendly contract. Suárez is slated to earn $10.7 million in 2021 and $11.2 million each of the next three seasons before a $15-million team option for 2025. Suárez wouldn’t be a one-year stopgap.

Why would the Reds trade Suárez? Money, of course. Cincinnati is another organization looking to shed salary; they traded closer Raisel Iglesias to the Angels last month and right-hander Sonny Gray is available.

If JT can get 4 years elsewhere, we will bid him adieu like we did Ryu. (Wasn't even planning on rhyming that lol.)

Suarez would cost a lot of prospect capital as his deal is team friendly and has years remaining.

Bryant wouldn't cost much, but he also has not been effective recently. But if he rebounded, could be a massive steal.

As for the possibility of getting LeMahieu, I still don't see us giving him even 4 years, although if they think he could transition to DH, I guess you never know. Since so much payroll comes off the books after '21, I wouldn't completely rule out going into the luxury tax for just a year of penalties, since we could re-set it in '22 with so much salary coming off.

There are also reports that we have strong interest in Liam Hendriks.

RIP Sandra Scully....got to meet her prior to the 2013 season while the Scully's where finishing their shopping at a hardware store not far from their Lake Sherwood home. Vinny was already getting back into their car so missed my chance but Sandra was very warm and kind to me when I asked her if she knew when Vin is going to retire, she gave me vague not sure kind of answer!

I've been a fan of the Dodgers since 1959 and there is no position player I like more than Justin Turner. We all know his qualities so I'll skip the why's. I not only want to see him retire as a Dodger player, but continue his baseball career with the Dodgers.

As such, though four years is too long, as is three, I'd still offer him a three year deal, with understanding that he can continue on with the organization in some capacity, likely coaching.

Wow a little surprised, with Treinen returning we can safely assume Baez is out.

I would only think about JT for 4 years if the NL switched to using a DH.

Source said the Dodgers were in on Lindor till the end but wouldn’t budge on their prospects.

Expect them to make their splash soon

Typical situation of teams wanting gems from the Dodgers farm system but taking scraps from any other team.

Wonder who were the prospects they asked for?

I’m thinking Clayton Beeter, Michael Bush, Kody Hoese
