The #Dodgers certainly saw an opportunity in #Brewers veteran Corey Knebel, and did not blink at the projected $5.125 million salary by
@mlbtraderumors

I’ve read some reports that the Brewers nontendered Knebel:

Quote:
By being non-tendered, Knebel can now be signed by any other major league team.

Other reports say they had a Wednesday dedline to offer him a contract but instead traded him to us (they were going to nontender him anyways)

Quote:
Milwaukee had been facing a Wednesday night deadline on whether to offer Knebel a 2021 contract. Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns said the deal was completed before that deadline.

So, I’m guessing we also had this Wednesday deadline to tender him a contract or he becomes a free agent? So we acquired him, tendered him a contract and now we go to arbitration (and the projected salary is $5.125M?)

If this is the case, that means that we felt he would have gotten more as a free agent? Somehow, I doubt that.

Yup, this is exactly what happened:

Quote:
The Brewers planned on not tendering Knebel a contract before trading him. The Dodgers then tendered him a deal before the deadline.

Wonder what we tendered him?

Looks like his velocity picked up at the end of the year:

Quote:
Knebel didn't touch 96 mph until the end of the 2020 season, a bit off from his 97.3 mph mark back during his 2017 All-Star season. He should figure to look better in his second year back from the procedure.

Dodgers’ Michael Busch stands out at instructional league
No. 31 overall pick in 2019 excelled in Arizona

With no minor league season and no Arizona Fall League in 2020, information on prospects has been sparse at best this year. So with actual game play in instructional leagues in both Arizona and Florida, we at least have some semblance of minor league news.

Kyle Glaser at Baseball America wrote about the players who impressed the most during instructional leagues this year, including this on Michael Busch, the Dodgers’ supplemental first-round pick in 2019:

Busch earned universal reviews as the top hitter in Arizona. He took high quality at-bats, turned around upper-90s velocity and showed home run power to center field and both gaps. His balance, bat speed, hand-eye coordination and strike-zone discipline all drew high praise. Evaluators were split on Busch’s defense at second base, but he earned consistent grades as a plus hitter with plus power.

Busch was at the alternate training site at USC during the season, along with his fellow first-round pick from 2019, Kody Hoese, who was taken six picks before Busch. Back in early September, Gavin Lux singled out Hoese as a standout among hitters at USC.

“Kody Hoese can really, really, really hit. I felt like every day he was hitting the ball off the wall or shooting a double the other way,” Lux said.

Hoese is rated the Dodgers’ No. 3 prospect by MLB Pipeline, with Busch No. 4.

Here are the notable prospects we left unprotected for the Rule 5 draft:

Quote:
Among those left unprotected from the Rule 5 Draft are

1) infielder Omar Estevez (Dodgers' No. 21 prospect),
2) right-handed pitcher Brett de Geus (No. 27) and
3) outfielder Cody Thomas (No. 30).

The Dodgers’ roster is at 36.

We had a Mike Busch once. Boy did he suck. The player he tried to "replace" Tim Wallach wasnt anything great in LA either but Busch blew. Other players called him "Scab"

Dodgers Prospects All Over the Rule 5 Draft Watch List

Los Angeles will likely lose some pretty big prospects this year.

MLB’s Rule 5 draft is set to take place this Thursday afternoon. This year, it’s tough to gauge which teams will be willing to take on minor league talent given the fact that there wasn’t a minor league season. But in a typical year, a Rule 5 draft allows teams to take certain non-40-man roster players from other teams. The Dodgers are once again in a spot where they could lose some young talent.

Players that were signed at age 18 or younger need to be added to a team’s 40-man roster within five seasons to avoid the draft. Players signed age 19 or older need to be protected within four seasons in order to stay out of the draft. This year, the Dodgers have 3 guys on the “10 names to watch” list released by MLB.

Quote:
Omar Estevez, 2B/SS

Estevez is currently the Dodgers number 21 prospect overall. They paid $6 million extra just to sign him in 2015 for exceeding their international bonus pool. While he profiles long-term at second base due to fringy defense, his bat is really what drew the organization to him in the first place. At 22-years-old, there is a lot of good potential for Estevez playing at the right position.

Quote:
Marshall Kasowski, RHP

Kasowski has missed a ton of bats pitching at the professional, striking out 14.8 batters per 9 innings pitched. Unfortunately, he’s also walked 5.5 per 9 as he continues to figure out his control. Quickly approaching 26-yers-old, Kasowski is running out of time to get things figured out. Of the 3 guys on the lists, Marshall seems to be the biggest risk while also potentially being the biggest payoff for a team rolling the dice on him.

Quote:
Jordan Sheffield, RHP

Sheffield is one of those Vanderbilt arms that the Dodgers hoped would work out. Sheffield moved to the bullpen in 2018 and his strikeout rate shot up to 12.1 per 9. Much like Kasowski, Sheffield has struggled big time with his command at the professional level, walking 7 per 9 during the 2019 season.

All MLB Teams 2020

Quote:
FIRST TEAM

C: Salvador Perez, Royals
1B: Freddie Freeman, Braves
2B: DJ LeMahieu, Yankees*
SS: Fernando Tatis Jr., Padres
3B: Manny Machado, Padres
OF: Mookie Betts, Dodgers
OF: Mike Trout, Angels
OF: Juan Soto, Nationals
DH: Marcell Ozuna, Braves*

SP: Shane Bieber, Indians
SP: Trevor Bauer, Reds*
SP: Yu Darvish, Cubs
SP: Max Fried, Braves
SP: Jacob deGrom, Mets

RP: Liam Hendriks, A’s*
RP: Nick Anderson, Rays

Quote:
SECOND TEAM

C: J.T. Realmuto, Phillies*
1B: José Abreu, White Sox
2B: Brandon Lowe, Rays
SS: Corey Seager, Dodgers
3B: José Ramírez, Indians
OF: Ronald Acuña Jr., Braves
OF: Mike Yastrzemski, Giants
OF: Michael Conforto, Mets
DH: Nelson Cruz, Twins*

SP: Dinelson Lamet, Padres
SP: Gerrit Cole, Yankees
SP: Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers
SP: Kenta Maeda, Twins
SP: Hyun Jin Ryu, Blue Jays

RP: Brad Hand, Indians*
RP: Devin Williams, Brewers

There’s just something wrong with having a DH make the All MLB team. Ozuna wouldn’t be good enough to make the All
MLB as an outfielder. But, because he can’t play defense, he’s able to make the All MLB first team.

Dodgers Select Ryan January & Roimer Bolivar, Lose 8 Prospects In Rule 5 Draft

The 2020 Major League Baseball Rule 5 Draft took place on Thursday morning, and it seemingly centered around the Los Angeles Dodgers organization.

The Dodgers lost two of their prospects in the Major League portion of the draft, with the Texas Rangers taking Brett de Geus and the Colorado Rockies selecting Jordan Sheffield.

Both are reliever prospects who have had success in the Minor Leagues after being drafted by the Dodgers. They must remain on the Rangers’ and Rockies’ active rosters, respectively, if healthy for the entire 2021 season, or they will be sent back to the Dodgers.

If de Geus or Sheffield are returned to the Dodgers, they would not be required to immediately add them to the 40-man roster.

During the Minor League phase of the Rule 5 Draft, the Dodgers lost six prospects.

1) Relief pitcher Shea Spitzbarth was taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates,
2) reliever Tyler Gilbert is headed to the Arizona Diamondbacks,
3) shortstop Errol Robinson to the Cincinnati Reds,
4) outfield Chris Roller to the Cleveland Indians,
5) shortstop Drew Jackson to the New York Mets and
6) infielder Marcus Chiu to the Miami Marlins.

Considering how much success the Dodgers organization has had at drafting and developing their farm system in recent years, it comes as no surprise that a number of different organizations wanted to get their hands on L.A.’s prospects.

In what was a bit of a surprise, other Dodgers prospects who were eligible, such as Omar Estevez and Marshall Kasowski, were not selected and remain in L.A.’s farm system. The organization reportedly had been anticipating the loss of Estevez.

Quote:

Dodgers take from Diamondbacks, Rays

While the Dodgers did not take anyone in the Major League portion, they were active on the Minor League side, adding Ryan January from the Arizona Diamondbacks and Roimer Bolivar from the Tampa Bay Rays.

January was an eighth-round pick by the Diamondbacks in 2016 out of San Jacinto College in Texas. He is mainly a catcher but also played some outfield in 2019, hitting .255/.386/.406 with three home runs and 21 RBI in 32 games across two lower Minor League levels.

Bolivar is a 21-year-old outfielder that originally signed with the Rays out of Venezuela. He has spent his first three seasons in the Dominican Summer League and in 2019, hit an impressive .323/.471/.432 with a home run, 24 RBI and 15 stolen bases in 47 games.

We ran Morrow into the ground in the 2017 postseason, and now he comes back to us in what sounds like a no-risk deal for us.

The Dodgers are gangsta.

DJ Lemahieu news

Quote:
On Friday, Bob Nightengale reported that he wanted a five-year, $100 million contract while the Yankees were offering four and $75 million. Kuty is now reporting that a source of Nightengale’s report told him that the gap between the two parties is more than $25 million and that while “the years are right,” the money is “wrong.” Other teams may be starting to have increased chances of landing the talented infielder.

Justin Turner news

Quote:
Dodgers Free Agent Rumors: Justin Turner Wants 3-Year Contract

Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays have been connected to Turner on multiple occasions. The Dodgers are said to have re-signing Turner as their top choice even amid reported interest in DJ LeMahieu and a potential Nolan Arenado trade.

According to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe, Turner is looking to sign a three-year contract:

Justin Turner is seeking a three-year deal with the Dodgers, and the team would like to have him back.

5/100 for DJ seems a lot, but I guess he is a good player and this may be his last chance to get that type of pay day.

Great pickup for them, I really don’t understand why Tampa is dealing him.

They signed him to a 5 yr $50M extension.

They kept him for the first 2 years which were cheaper:

2019 - $1M
2020 - $7M (prorated to $2.59M)

They’re trading him now because they don’t want to pay the last 3 years at the more expensive rates:

2021 - $10.5M
2022 - $12.5M
2023 - $16M

I think their reasoning is that they use him only as a 5ip pitcher so they can’t justify the cost. Plus, they got 4 players back for him for cheap.

Plus, now they can allocate that money elsewhere.

Looking at their payroll, everyone makes $4M or less except 2:

1) Kiermaier - $11.6M
2) Tsutsugo - $7M

On the bright side, they can’t be any worse against him in the future. It’s only going to get better from here.

Tampa Bay shows why they are a small market team. Your best pitcher in the World Series deals and gets traded away for prospects. On the plus side they sold him high and got in return a bunch of salary controlled players which means they can remain competitive for the foreseeable future.

This year in the WS?

That can’t be career because Betts played in the AL East (same division).

Pads making moves and looking goooood.

We'll see how it pans out though.

Seems like every team who wins the offseason can never carry that over to the regular season.

But could you imagine if Bauer ends up signing there?

2022 rotation:
Bauer
Clevinger
Darvish
Snell
Lamet/Paddack

To quote Larry David...'pretttaaaaay prettaaaay pretty good'
