Quote: | Leslie West, the towering guitarist who created the hard-rock milestone “Mississippi Queen” with his band Mountain, died Wednesday morning. West’s brother, Larry West Weinstein, confirmed the musician’s death to Rolling Stone. He was 75. The cause of death was cardiac arrest. On Monday, West was rushed to a hospital after suffering cardiac arrest at his home near Daytona, Florida, where he never regained consciousness. |
Quote: | A contemporary of Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jimi Hendrix, West was respected for his versatile playing (from fingerpicking to metallic power chords) and was revered by a new generation of guitar players who followed. In 2011, Eddie Van Halen told Rolling Stone that West and Deep Purple’s Ritchie Blackmore were among his biggest influences: “Leslie West has this incredible tone in Mountain,” Van Halen said. |

Not just a brilliant guitarist and singer in the rock n roll realm, but also a contributor to the hip-hop genre — the drum break on ‘Long Red’ is the most sampled drum break of all time. So many great songs and riffs, and that big guitar tone. Mountain were the US version of Cream, and remain one of the more underrated groups from that period. RIP Leslie, a true legend. |

Eddie played that in the Hagar years and in the latter Dave years. All recordings of it are horrible qualitywise, but he was closer than any others I've heard. His swells at the end of the main phrases are distinctly his own, tho. And his lead-ins where he runs his fingers down the whole neck before the phrases as well, but he could reach a similar tone and dirtiness of it that was pretty good. RIP to both gentlemen. God speed. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL
