David Cornwell, author of the modern Cold War spy novel genre passed a few days ago. His novels dealt with the trade craft actually used by field agents, as well with the self-serving, morally compromised games played with their Soviet-block counterparts. The novels were strong in terms of character studies with a satirical view of the UK, the US and the spy novel genre spawned by the absurdity of James Bond.
Cornwell knew the subject well, having served in both MI5 and MI6 until he was outed as a spy by the Soviet double agent Kim Philby. He couldn't write directly about the experience, so he fictionalized Philby in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. |

He essentially epitomized the genre. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

And everything you built that’s all for show

And had writing and storytelling skills well beyond it. _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” ― Elie Wiesel |
