Dodgers legend Tommy Lasorda hospitalized with heart issues

Hall of Fame Tommy Lasorda has been hospitalized in Orange County and is in intensive care, the Dodgers announced Sunday.

“Los Angeles Dodgers Hall of Fame great Tommy Lasorda has been hospitalized in Orange County,” the team said in a statement on Twitter.

“Lasorda, 93, was admitted and he is in intensive care, resting comfortably. The family appreciates everyone’s thoughts and prayers; however, they request their privacy at this time.”

The longtime Dodgers manager is not suffering from COVID-19, TMZ Sports also reported Sunday, but indicated Lasorda’s condition has worsened since he was admitted into the hospital a week ago. The outlet added that Lasorda is currently sedated and on a ventilator.

After a brief playing career — including short stints with the Brooklyn Dodgers — Lasorda became a household name during his 20-year run (1976-96) as the manger of the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning two World Series titles. In retirement, he coached the U.S. national team to a gold medal at the 2000 Olympics.

If you listened to Tommy these past years, he only hung on to see the Dodgers win another championship.

That as my first thought too. His speech at the beginning of the season he said he didn’t know how much time he had but he wanted to see 1 more title before the big guy upstairs called for him. I’m glad the team delivered but I hope he’s around for another title or two also. Wish him a speedy recovery.

Tommy!!!!!! Great manager and motivator and a big reason for the 1988 win.

The only reason we got Piazza and later hence, Sheffield was because of Tommy. (2 of the best hitters to ever wear Dodger blue and better than any hitters on our team right now...no one on our current team comes even close to the hitting prowess of Piazza - the best hitting catcher of all time or Sheffield - better patience and batting eye than Muncy coupled with better than Turner's ability to hit for average ADDED in with as much power as Bellinger).

How did your school pull that off?

Met him as I was boarding a plane in 1996, when he was the interim GM of the Dodgers. I walked by him in first class and when I said I was also Italian, he perked up a little bit. We briefly discussed the Dodgers and he signed a piece of paper for me, which said "To a great Italian", and then he signed his name. The whole thing probably lasted about a minute at most, but I'll never forget it.

I hope he can recover, but this doesn't sound good.

We must have given him a hefty speaking fee. I remember him being funny and encouraging, much love to Tommy and the Lasorda family in this difficult time.

Lasorda's from the era when Dodger managers were more or less staples. He managed them from 1976 through1996. Before him, Walter Alston managed the team from 1954 through 1976.

What's seldom mentioned, Tommy was a left handed pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers, 1954-55. He had an 0-4 record and 6.52 ERA as a left-handed pitcher.

He's Dodger Blue thru and thru.
