Some venues/acts are requiring phones be placed in lockable bags provided to audiences.

There are systems for doing that. It's a locking pouch -- before entering the seating area, you have to put your phone in it, and it locks when closed. You keep your phone with you, but you can't access it. At the end of the show, you pass by their station again and they digitally unlock it; they get their pouch back, you get your phone back. If there's ever an emergency, you have to leave the seating area to have them unlock your pouch. One example is that Springsteen on Broadway used it.

I enthusiastically support this.

I think (new) Cell Phones should come with a charging cable!

Apparently Apple does not as the new iPhone 12 does not come with headphones or a cable to charge it...!

Assuming he's not, the proposition begs some obvious questions.

Who determines what's "essential"?

What makes the ability to communicate on Saturday and Sunday any less crucial than the rest of the week?

What is the intended goal of shutting down communication on those days?

Would doing so actually accomplish that goal.

Is it possible to troll the controversial opinion thread?

I've never cared for Apple products, going back to the 1980's. The cool factor was never worth the high prices and proprietary/must-buy-and-only-from-Apple products.

And the nerd boy conventions, the yearly ones with Steve Jobs, reminded me of Star Wars & Star Trek ones.

Fwiw the phones will come with a charging cable, they just won’t come with a wall adapter or the earbuds. It’s difficult to imagine there are too many customers who don’t already have a drawer full of these already. It’s pretty wasteful.

It was neither trolling nor serious about the specifics. Just a desire that there be a time where we put the damn devices down (I say as I type this on one) and interact with the local world in real time.

I suspect if they stopped manufacturing ear buds and power blocks, we’d run out sometime in 2221.

With the introduction of their riff on MagSafe for phones, I suspect either the next model or the one after that may not have any port at all.

Agreed. I think it is inevitable at this point. From an engineering standpoint, a body with no ports at all makes too much sense.

There's a giant stairway at a nearby park. There are a slides down the side for the kids to go down.

Dislocated my left pinkie. Omar witnessed (and might have influenced) the entire event.

I agree, it would have been defiant. Though the memorial is nice, it feels like acquiescence to defeat.

That site is now a American's greatest symbol of commerce and unfettered capitalism run amok: a mall. Basically nothing more American, imo.

Honestly, Cut, I don't know if you've been there or not, but it's a gorgeous memorial and I cried when I visited.

I went to the area but honestly I'm embarrassed to say I didn't to the actual memorial part. I've only been to NYC for work and never quite had the time. I'm sure you're right. I couldn't help but notice the mall in the area though.

As a former finance bro, I can attest that most of the Financial District absolutely sucks outside of Delmonico's. But the memorial is worth visiting next time work takes you to the Big Apple.

You have been demystified.

Not true, because I was never a finance bro. But Delmonico's is great.

Delmonico's is one of the worst dining experiences in the City. That's not controversial, it's the truth.

Service?

On a par with the food.

Delmonico's is inside a gorgeous building. The interior was nice and clean. But for the steakhouse experience you have to head to Midtown.

Well, I won't disagree and I haven't been there in years. But compared to the rest of the offerings in the Financial District...

You didn't hear it from me, but Mule may have violated the basic rule of don't place things that bend and skid on surfaces meant for sliding. Omar had no such issues I am told.
