Cincinnati Reds Hall-of-Fame second baseman Joe Morgan dead at 77

Cincinnati Reds Hall-of-Fame second baseman Joe Morgan has passed away at the age of 77.AP

For the second time in less than a week, Major League Baseball has lost a legend.

Two-time National League MVP Joe Morgan has passed away at the age of 77. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale was the first to report the news.

On Friday, the New York Yankees announced Whitey Ford had died at 91.

The last two months have been just terrible for baseball’s aging Hall of Famers.

In addition to losing Morgan and Ford, New York Mets legend Tom Seaver died on Aug. 31, St. Louis Cardinals speedster Lou Brock died on Sept. 2 and former Cardinals teammate Bob Gibson died on Oct. 2.

Morgan was the engine of the Big Red Machine which won back-to-back World Series titles in 1975 and 1976. Morgan earned National League MVP honors both seasons, leading a roster which included Pete Rose, Johnny Bench and Tony Perez. Morgan also was a 10-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner.

Morgan’s 22-year MLB career began in 1963 with the Houston Colt .45s. He joined the Reds before the 1972 season following an eight-player trade between the teams. Morgan left Cincinnati after the 1979 season and spent time with the San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies and Oakland A’s.

Morgan joined the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990.

Joe Morgan was one of the greatest 2nd basemen the game has known. His game was complete, he could hit, run, field and throw. RIP Little Joe

I was not around to see Joe Morgan play but I remember him for his 2nd act as a sports broadcaster where he brought his insights as an MLB player.

Great player! I hated him as he always killed the Dodgers..

You guys remember how he used to flap his back arm when he was batting? That's still how I recall him...

I imitated it back in the day. The Big Red Machine was a fun team to watch.

I do, I went to a lot of games as a kid in the 70s at Dodger Stadium....many times against the Big Red Machine.

I was always nervous when he started cranking his back arm, he was a great player and from what I can tell an equally great man. RIP Joe Morgan....

A pillar of the Big Red Machine that beat both the Red Sox and Yankees in consecutive World Series. RIP

Never saw him play live, but did see film. Really enjoyed his baseball analysis on broadcasts.

Another loss this year for sports.

I just checked and they did not like you either.

Joe Morgan was a 5'7" MONSTER while in Cincinnati. He was only a Red for 8 seasons....much less than many of his BRM teammates, but he has the highest WAR on a per game basis in Reds history. There was a 6 year stretch in Cincinnati where he had the highest WAR in baseball 5 of the years, and was 2nd in MLB the other year.

RIP Little Joe...

Cmon, how could you hate Marge Schott? Next yer gonna say you hated Leona Helmsley. Those two were lovable ol gals. Half of a Golden Girls type of situation. In one epi, Marge got fired for professing her admiration of Hitler and hijinks ensued. In another, Leona says, "We don't pay taxes, the little people pay taxes," and the audience roared in laughter.

One of my friends, an NYU MBA worked in management for Leona Helmsley. You were considered hot property if you could survive 6 months, as everyone in the industry knew she was a disgusting and utterly reprehensible piece of garbage. He only survived 2 months as Leona demanded certain personal servicing favors in private, well away from husband Harry. My friend needed the job, just not that badly.

Oh, God, no. He's lucky he didn't have large gambling debts at the time. She was 100 on the little people quote tho. Trump agrees.

The Helmsley Palace, "The only Palace in the world where the Queen stands guard". Leona didn't bother with flirting or suggestive language, she came at him (and I'm sure many others) via frontal assault.

Though his stories were funny in a sick way, you couldn't help visualizing that woman coming after you. It was disturbing.
