It's possible I was at that show.

In the early 80's I had friendships/connections with a few people, and got backstage to a lot of concerts through people I knew with Avalon Attractions. Got into several VH concerts that way, and had a conversation with EVH before a show in San Diego -- mostly talked about a guitarist who was a mutual friend. I think he may have been the first famous person I ever had a one-on-one conversation with.

Good version of DOA. Ed occasionally did a different version than the studio version. Like this one from 77 with a climb in the progression.

If any of you are interested and/or are big VH fans, there is an absolute treasure trove of bootlegs from when they were playing small clubs and high school auditoriums around LA in that 1974-1977 time frame pre-1st album. Ed is just on a completely different planet in some of these, it's truly mind-blowing. Lot's of cool covers/unreleased originals in there too.

Here's one from 1976

I'm not lying when I say EVH and Kobe were my 2 biggest heroes, one for both of my loves: basketball and guitar. Can't believe they're both gone in the same year.

Kobe died on Ed's bday, 1/26, btw. This must be a rough year for you. I know an MJ-EVH superfan, too. I remembered you were one of the other LG VH people. Lakers5150 hasn't posted, but I'm sure he's ill over it.

Underrated and inventive on the keyboard as well. Been binging some Van Halen; Eddie's playing a lot of keys especially on the Van Hagar days. Dreams is a great tune, Why Can't This Be Love also has a totally awesome Oberheim lick from Eddie. Everyone was using that thing in the mid 80s.

Dude.. DOA is probably a top 5 VH song for me. Here's my favorite live version, think this was from a show in London on their 1st tour in '78.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlKsC8nichc

Ed is absolutely ON FIRE (pun intended) in this. Check out the fill he plays around 2:12. And then the build up at the end + outro solo is just completely nuts.

Great one, never heard. Has that same galloping progression at end. They should've done that on the original track...maybe, some fans are fiercely protective of the studio versions. Two guys in comments say he went out of tune, but "corrected" it on the fly or otherwise worked around it. PS: I think Dave invented new lyrics for every version of that song on the go. Hard to understand him in that state, prolly 3 sheets by that song, but sounds like he says "Hangin out, belly full of beer". If not, he should've used that lyric, that's my genius lyric suggestion, heh...

And imagine what he paid for it in 80 or whenever he got it. The way Lambos and those Italian exotics sell at auction, they are on an ever upward trajectory, especially depending on rarity, naturally. I actually watch a bit of car auctions on TV at times. And that's a special, very rare Lambo. He probably stole that when he got it. Btw, Hagar still has that black Berlinetta Boxer from "I Can't Drive......FIFTY FIIIIIIVE!!!!1". What a lovely thing to have constantly appreciating. Of course their origin story as a duo ties to their Italian mechanic.

There's a video interview of his from ca 85 where he's asked about that and he said he got the call from Quincy Jones while he was in the studio and the calls were sketchy and Ed finally picked up and called him a FA thinking he was a prank caller. When he realized it was QJ, he felt like an idiot and apologized and after the Beat It thing, QJ sent him a thank you letter signed, "Sincerely, QJ (the FA)". Weird thing is I last saw the video of Beat It hours before the news broke. It was in my requested vids. That's one of my fave Jax songs aside from Eddie. Like his ones along the line of Beat It and Dirty Diana, the rock ones. That's also blatantly his solo in the walkman scene in BTTF 1, which he also did pro bono. Roth didn't like him lending out like that.

I feel for Alex Van Halen. Man just lost a best friend, a band mate, and most importantly a brother. He was always the mysterious one in VH; I hope this isn’t the last we hear from AVH.

Also Wolfie, Eddie always spoke so proudly of him. Even named his signature guitar after him (the Peavey Wolfgang, then the EVH Wolfgang). That Twitter post he shared was truly heartbreaking. Nonetheless, a very talented bass player and musician. I’m looking forward to him carrying his dads legacy.

He and his brother are the twin type of sibling, which means you're dealing with both of em in a fight or argument or whatever. Not natural twins, but acted like it. Finished each others' sentences, etc. Alex, true, always been the most muted one of the group and the oldest iirc. But see that interview of them from 96 when they were pissed off at Dave in his cameo return that Summer. It sucks that they and the others eventually came to hate each other and were frenemies at best. I've read Dave and Ed both talk sh about Michael Anthony. Those two came to be pissed about the 4 way writing credits they had and it dawned on DLR and EVH that they were writing the songs and making the same as the bass player as Dave said. As was also examined in the recent docu on The Go-Go's, they had the same strife. That was even worse with a case of the lead singer Carlisle not having writing credits, so she's the face of the band and 2 others were making money that floored the rest when they discovered it. Eddie called Mike Soft Sobolewski (his actual last name) on Stern not too many years ago because he apparently went off with Hagar and they didn't like that. And even Hagar came to hate his guts tho they reportedly reconciled before this. Hagar probably feels good that he did that in time. That band was legend for their classic band issues. They ain't the only one, either. Ozzy got kicked out of Sabbath, Tyler got kicked out of Aerosmith, Axl hates Slash, etc.

Oh man. Damn. I love you Eddie Van Halen. A true rocker, a deep musician, a HUGE heart, and an LA boy through and through. A bold innovator and the undisputed king of all wheedlers. What a sound!!! I hope you jam with Jimi tonight and soar freely through the cosmos. A vibrant part of music has left this earth. Broken through to the other side. What a sweetheart, my brother. All love and condolences to your family.

We are enormously saddened to hear about the untimely passing of Eddie Van Halen. We considered him an inspiration, an idol, and after spending a summer together on the road in '88, a friend. Sending love to Alex,
@wolfvanhalen & everyone in the greater VH family.

Yeah the Pantera guys were HUGE Van Halen fans. It’s a shame Dime left us the way that he did, he should still be with us. At least he took Eddies original bumblebee guitar from VHII with him. Shows what a genuine sweetheart EVH was.

On another note, If anyone’s familiar with comedian Craig Gass, he has an incredible Van Halen story. In case y’all wanna hear it: https://youtu.be/lVEB80WWBjY Eddie was just an amazing dude.

My Eddie Van Halen Story: Eddie lived near the bottom of Coldwater Canyon back in the early '80's, just up the road from where my dad lived at the time. So I had several opportunities to interact with him for a while. The first was at the old Hughes Market at the bottom of the road when I was probably just turned 18. I saw a bright red Lamborghini Miura parked in front of the store. I was a car nut so I walked over to check it and was walking around it when I realized there was someone sitting in the driver's seat watching me. So a bit flustered by being caught gawking, I complimented the guy an asked him a couple of questions about which specific model it was etc. and after a moment or two, I suddenly realized who I was talking to. He registered my moment of recognition and chuckled as I tried to stay cool. We finished the brief conversation with me kind of stammering around and he was very nice.

Not long after, I got a job at the gas station right there at Coldwater and Ventura and he was a regular. So I'd chat with him about his various cars while he got filled up and topped off his oil. Eventually, I started working the late or graveyard shift. This was back in the day before the pumps were automated and had credit card readers. So I sat in the booth and everyone would have to come to the booth, pay ahead and in cash only. One night he came in and needed oil. The station was gas only after "Full Service" hours, and the oil was all locked away in the service bays. I explained that oil wasn't available and he shook his head in frustration. So I thought, "WTF, It's freakin EVH, you really gonna say 'no can do'?" and said, "Well, since I like your cars . . . come with me" and I broke the cardinal rule, I left the booth with the keys to the service bay and we went in and grabbed him a can of oil. He was very appreciative, he went to top off his oil as I locked up and returned to my booth. After that he was always super friendly when he came in and would go out of his way to say "Hi".

Fast forward to early one morning long after that and I am in my booth. This Mercedes comes screaming into the station and a woman jumps out. It was Valerie Bertinelli. She came in fairly regularly as well, and went to the full service pumps and was always nice, but kept to herself. Anyway, she comes up to the window and it was clear she was flustered and angry. She asked me to fill the car. Her sense of urgency was obvious. Trying to sound as apologetic as I could, I said it was self service only. She looked at me baffled and said, "How do I do that?" and it was clear she was genuinely unsure and frustrated about it. "I've really got to get out of here. Can you help me please?!" Well of course I was going to. So I said , "Sure, you just have to pay first, that's how the pump unlocks". So she hurriedly pulls out a credit card, "Oh no" I thought and then said, "Sorry, it's cash only". Now she was very upset. "This is all I have!" she yelled. It didn't feel it was at me, she was a bit frantic and I could tell she just wanted to get moving. So I told her I could let her have $5, because that's what I had in my pocket. She was very grateful as I left the booth and pumped the gas as she fidgeted and looked all around as if looking for someone. I finished and she thanked me as she jumped in the car and literally peeled out of the station and down Coldwater.

Moments later Eddie flies into the gas station, jumps out and comes over to the booth. He paused for a second looking like he wasn't sure what to say and then asked, "hey man . . . Uh . . . was um . . . did a woman in a Mercedes just come in here?"

I chuckled to myself and said, "You mean Valerie?"

"Yeah, yeah . . . she was here?" he asked again.

"Yep, she just left"

"Thanks!' he said and started to hurry back to his car and then stopped and turned and asked, "Did she seem pissed off?"

"She was definitely in a hurry and yeah. she seemed kinda upset . . ." I said, kinda blown away to be in the midst of this moment of celebrity drama.

He stood the for a moment nodding his head and said, "yeah . . . she's really pissed off at me . . . I gotta find her . . ." and he started back to the car. "Hey man, did you see which way she went?" he asked as he started to get in.

"Down Coldwater towards the 101 . . ."

"THANKS! . . ." and he paused, shook his head and he said out loud but clearly to himself, "Yeah, she's really (bleep) pissed." And then jumped in the car and screamed out of the station as I sat there thinking, "Well that just happened".

Awesome story. Can't believe you saw Valerie Berinelli in person. Damn you are one lucky dude.

You know Muley's pulse started racin. I believe Mule's tale about Ed asking if she was pissed off. That's 100 an Eddie question. And then Val is one of them super chatty gurlz and still is. The ones who wanna know your feels on everything. If she was pissed, Ed was in for a night of drama.

81/82 was when she wanted to show Mule and the rest of us that she was grown up (ahem, legal):
