Manna From Heaven... The heart and soul of this series was up for grabs tonight.

The Lakers got smoked by Jimmy Butler in the last game, and the Heat got their confidence back. A win tonight and the Heat would own momentum heading into the best of three remaining games.

In the last game, Butler hunted matchups as we switched continually, despite Butler not taking a single three. The Heat also pulled Anthony Davis out of the paint by having him defend perimeter players.

Vogel adjusted tonight by sliding AD onto Butler to get length on him as he tried to attack the paint and midrange. They went under the screens and dared Butler to beat them from three. Right from the start, this slowed down the Heat offense after it had been building up confidence in the past couple of games.

The Lakers took an early lead late in the first quarter as several of Miami’s attempts ended up with them trying to score over Davis. KCP gave the Lakers a strong punch with 10 points early along with some great passing. As we rotated out starters and AD sat in the second quarter, the Heat regained some momentum.

LeBron struggled to score in the paint as the Heat sent help or stunted to pack the paint. He’d have more turnovers than assists in the first half. In the second half, he’d hit tough shots and get to the line as both teams battled back and forth.

The Lakers took a 75-70 lead heading into the fourth. Prior to this game, they were 55-0 this season when leading to start the fourth. Incredible stat.

In crunch time, KCP came up big with back-to-back scores. He’d sink a corner three to push the lead to 5 with under 3 minutes left as we got a rare transition opportunity. Then, he’d attack the paint with the shot clock low and score a layup. Those were his first two scores of the second half. Manna From Heaven...as Rob Pelinka once said when we originally signed KCP.

With LeBron banged up in the final minute, the Lakers went to the Rondo/Davis two-man game. Rondo would score a layup. Davis would put the exclamation point on this game with a dagger three with 39 seconds left and then cap it off with a block on a Jimmy Butler drive shortly later. The Lakers held on to win the 102-96 close-fought battle and to go up 3-1.

One more win.

LeBron -- -- He was making tough shots tonight. He’d sink a couple of deep threes as well as a tough fade in the post. He did get to the line, though and knock them down. He took a lot of bumps and bruises and did not look great at the finish line as he let Rondo/AD close the deal. Hopefully, he can go without issue. Poor first half tonight as he had 5 turnovers and 4 assists in the first half. A lot of stunting and sagging into the paint from help defenders and a lot of time with Bam on him defensively. We ran a lot of high screens for him trying to get him downhill. But we may want to see if we can pull a couple more defenders out on those like we did with the Nuggets late in that series when they did the same. Getting out in transition more would help him out, as well. Really, just amazing numbers from him with how hard this game was for him to score. He was getting a little irritated late in this one with all the hard fouls, having an occasional word or two. But he shrugged them off and went to the line and knocked them down. The Stats: He scored 28 points on 8-16 shooting (2-5 from three, 10-12 from the line) to go with 12 boards (2 offensive), 8 assists, 1 steal, 6 turnovers and 2 fouls in 39 minutes. He was a -2.

Davis -- -- Huge game defensively. He was the reason we locked up the Heat offense. On Butler from the start to finish without getting into any foul trouble in this one. Nothing irritated me more in the last game then seeing the Lakers switch without trying to recover their primary defender on Butler. Jimmy doesn’t want to shoot threes. Use that to your advantage. The Lakers did that tonight, going deep under screens all night. Butler ended up a -11. AD ended up a +17. His defense in this game was just limited to Butler. He’d occasionally take on a challenge on rotation and force the Heat into some very, very tough shots, usually missing (Herro shot a rainbow floater to the ceiling and back that went as AD was all over him on one). Offensively, we’ve got a lot of work to do. The Heat three-quarter fronted AD a ton and sent help as soon as he’d turn. Some good passing sequences from AD. On one he drew the double and found AC weakside for a three. He also had a nice give and go to LeBron for a layup. There were some nice two-man sequences. I always love when we can get KCP going downhill and collapsing the D. KCP set him up twice for dunks. A couple more dunks off Rondo and Morris drive and dishes. AD also drained a couple of threes in the second half with that ice cold dagger three with 39 seconds left. No offensive boards, but he was fouled a couple times on the offensive glass, so that number is a little deceptive. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 8-16 shooting (2-4 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 4 blocks, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 42 minutes. He was a +17.

Green -- -- On the plus side, it was great to see him sink a corner three early on when left open. Just being a threat is important. He’s not that any more and that is causing some issues. Tonight, he knocked down a couple. He’d get a couple scores off steals (Rondo stole one in the backcourt and found him, Green poked a ball loose on the other and dunked on the break). I’d prefer more AC and Kuzma, but we at least were able to keep him off Butler as we weren’t switching. That makes him a little more serviceable out there. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-8 shooting (2-6 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a +5.

Howard -- -- Really nothing going on in this game. He played one stint where he was a +3. We couldn't find him for lobs. He pulled down an offensive board and threw it away for a turnover. But really not a factor as we went to Morris for most of the minutes tonight. The Stats: He didn't score on 0-1 shooting and had 2 boards, 2 turnovers and 1 foul. He was a +3.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- That’s what I’m talking about! Hell, yeah, KCP. That was a game and then some from KCP tonight. Feisty D all night, but he was very timely with his scoring. He led the team in the first half (10 points on 4-8 shooting). His first big play of the game was a lob on the two-man with AD for a dunk. He’d swish a corner three on a kickout, attack off the three line for another layup, then hit another corner three that started on an AD post where we swung it to him. We’ve. Got. To. Hit. Those. Kinds. Of. Baskets. When they overplay our stars, the role players need to make them pay. So it’s really bigger than just a three. Those shots simply have to be made with consistency. In the second half, he’d set AD up for a corner three on an attack. He’d also blow past Robinson and lob to AD for a dunk. He’d finish with 5 assists. That’s an underrated stat of this game. He’d also hit LeBron on a jump pass for FTs late in the game. That won’t go as an assist. But damn good passing tonight. Then came the big three in the corner with 2:55 left when we were up just 2. Then, the huge drive with the shotclock low to score past Robinson with 2 minutes left to force a timeout. Loved this game from him. Defensively, he was hustling all night. He came up with a stop on Herro, as well, late in the game. But just a great effort and he was on the same page as other defenders, which hasn’t been the case in the first few games. Locked in. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-12 shooting (3-8 from three) to go with 3 boards, 5 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a +8.

Kuzma -- -- “We got to be hungrier than the Heat,” Kuzma said of closing. Olynyk played just 12 minutes in this one and scored only 4 points. We had AD on Jimmy so at times you’d see others like Kuzma on Olynyk and that kept our bigs in the paint. Occasionally, Kuzma would end up with Butler. He smothered him well on one fade to get a stop (he’d also have some smothering D on Nunn to get stop). So some good moments there. Offensively, he hit a couple of threes and sank a step-back corner jumper. He’d draw FTs as well on a spin in the post. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-6 shooting (2-5 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -4.

Caruso -- -- Just watching him bounce off guys all night with a lot of physical play. He took an illegal screen by Butler at the end of the half that wasn’t called and got up in some pain. But he kept bouncing off guys. He got shoved into AD and both went down. But both kept getting up. AC kept crashing the glass. Kept challenging shots. You need that kind of energy around your superstars. He was also setting screen after screen. He’s got to be bruised up. Offensively, he’d sink a corner three on a kickout. He’d score a reverse. And early in the game, he had a layup taking it to Herro on iso and outmuscling him to score right over him. That was a grown man score. We saw a rarity in this game. AC got T’d up after complaining about a no call. He was pissed. He paid them back with a couple of flops to draw calls. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-5 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 turnover and no fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -5.

Rondo -- -- Man, just one bucket tonight. One. And it was a killer. With LeBron hurting, the Lakers up by just 4, he worked the two-man game with AD and scored a huge layup. Next time he’d set AD up for a three to close the deal. Some good drives in this game, he just couldn’t finish some. Some excellent passing sequences (faking a midrange to hit AD for a dunk). He also got to a couple of offensive boards (felt like more...actually my notes show one more), but we got big ones by him and AC down the stretch. Our guards were getting running starts and crashing. The Heat aren’t playing with pace, so that is there when we want it. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-7 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 7 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +8.

Morris -- -- Switch up in the second half as we started Morris. I’m not sure that made much of a difference. I do trust him more when he’s across from AD as the micro ball has issues. Some difficulties early defending Bam who got some layups on him. Morris a sank a couple of threes and was fouled on another for his points tonight. A couple of assists, once hitting AC cutting baseilne. Another drive and dish to AD for a dunk. Big pickup for the Lakers this season as he's played some key minutes in the post season. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 2-8 shooting (2-7 from three, 3-3 from the line) to gow tih 3 boards, 2 assists and 2 foul sin 30 minutes. He was a +0.

Vogel -- -- Key Moment: Timeout Lakers up 4 with 1:37 left. LeBron looked like he hurt his groin. Out of the timeout, he went to the corner offensively and we let Rondo and AD work the two-man game. A change up on the Heat. Rondo took that for a layup to go up 6. Next time down, they ran it again and AD sank the ice cold dagger with 39 seconds left to go up 9. Ball game.

Key Substitution: We saw just the single stint from Dwight in this game, starting Morris in the second half. I’m not sure that made a major impact. Let’s go with having Rondo out there to close and running the offense with AD when we needed key buckets. LeBron was in pain and standing in the corner. Rondo stepped up and helped deliver the K.O.

Key Stat: A few in this game. 56-0 when leading in the fourth. LeBron said he didn’t know that stat coming into tonight. Let’s also highlight 96 points. If we can hold the Heat to that, we will win the games. The Lakers also did a good job not getting into foul trouble in this one (14 total fouls). Lastly, -11. That’s Jimmy Butler’s +/- tonight as we held him to 22 points. Glad to see Vogel make the adjustment of going under screens against Butler to prevent the switches and slip actions. That and allowing AD to cover him so that he was there in the paint were the key moves tonight.

Coach’s Challenge: At the end of the first half, Vogel used his on a defensive stand. LeBron challenged a Herro shot that went over the backboard. The refs thought LeBron touched it. He didn’t. Challenge successful to regain a possession.

Davis was a force in that 4th quarter on defense.

Felt like he put the fear of god in Butler in attempting any type of shot.

It's insane the Lakers can put their 7-footer on the opposing team's best player and not skip a beat.

AD was a beast defensively. Just isolate and watch him all game long and you can see how much he's impacting what the opponent is doing.

The fact that he didn't win defensive player of the year is ridiculous. Oh well. Just finish it out and that's all the hardware anyone needs.

Great write up DB

Main takeaway this game - at one point in the third the Heat had 20 FTAs to the Lakers 5. The refs evened things up in the final quarter but I was so angry at the refs all game

Heh. Almost forgot about him after he played just that first stint and wasn't a huge factor in this game.

Great summary DB and I agree re DPOY, that was bogus. AD is the primary reason the Lakers can run the schemes they like and sets the tone for others - hell he got LBJ to be more engaged defensively. Their entire team defensive ranking improved. It's ashame the media fell in love with the Giannis factor.

But if the trade off is a ring? Will take that every time.

Funny thing it´s that playing Bam Adebayo helps the Lakers defense.

With Olynik, they either take Anthony Davis out of the paint, or he can bully smaller defenders down low.

With Bam out there, the 2 vs. 2 (Bam-Jimmy vs Davis/Lebron) plays to our defensive strenghts.

Thanks DB! Another excellent write-up on another excellent win! One more, hopefully Friday we take the title.

AD was awesome on both ends,

LeBron awesome as well in spite of Crowder shoving him to the floor every time he got airborne near the basket

I like the adjustment Vogel made, having AD go under screens and stick with Butler. We also started getting a little penetration towards the basket when it mattered. I hope we see more of that Game 5.

Great job KCP - huge plays late in the game. He's everything I thought he would never be. Kudos KCP. Kudos Vogel as well.

Rondo - great contribution late, getting our offense to move when we needed him, playing smart ball.

And Caruso always brings the stout defense all night. He got shoved and beat up big time but there's no quit in him.

Still, a surprisingly physical game from the Heat, both sides had a lot of fight in them. Lakers win. I'm happy.

Props as always DB. Always taking time away from the family to put out a detailed, insightful rundown of the game. Great job of always doing something fresh with each write up. THANKS!

-KCP KCP KCP! Both ends.
-AC just keeps on keeping on. He has been our most consistent player the entire series.
-Our bench guys all came up with at least one big play.
-LB, treating the rock like dog shiiit in the beginning of the game, settled down and was Lebron.
-AD with stifling D in the 4th. He continuously forced Butler into no mans land, forcing him to give up his dribble while eating up the clock and panicking to find an open teammate.
-Frank pulling the right strings on this one.

Thanks DB.

I bet it was much better to cover this one, with us winning, than losing. My nerves were going crazy in this one. You just felt we were one run away from taking control of the game, but that run just did not happen until the last 2 min of the game. We keep going up 5-7 only for Miami to get right back in. Some of the shots Miami were making were ridiculous, and we go up 5-7 and have so many good looks from 3 and just can not make them. Then the lead slips back to 2-3, 1, and you start to ponder whether this is just Miami's time, because the degree of difficulty of some of their shot making was incredible. We played very very good defense in this one, and I thought Miami hit shots they had no business making.

And when that big shot by KCP comes, and then another one. You just can't help but think back to Klutch, and all the overpayments KCP received. All of that is coming to fruit now, with AD-Bron-KCP.

On the game, I would really like Frank to make another adjustment next game, and that is shift Bron to more off the ball earlier in the 2nd half. I understand starting the game with Bron as the PG, but we need to close games with Rondo as our PG. Especially with the way Miami is defending us, we need to refrain from the overdribbling from Bron. I know we are looking for the mismatch off screens that lead to switches, using Bron as the ballhandler, but we need to mix it up more. We played as good as defense as you will ever see in the NBA, these playoffs. I would love for Vogel to start to trust Rondo more as the initiator in the 4th Q, and Lebron a little more in the Jordan/Kobe role. It seems AD is best served being the spot up 3 point shooter/rebound put back/cutter in the 4th Q in the Bron minutes. But our 4th Q offense in this one allowed Miami to stay in it, IMO.

Only late, did we begin to use Rondo the way we should have in the 4th.

That is not to say that we did not make some great adjustments and some changes, they have been noted. Kieff instead of Dwight, AD on Butler, going under screens against Butler, more action looking for cutters in the offense instead of settling for the quick 3. We did a lot of good things. I just think we could have put Miami away much earlier with taking Bron more off the ball in the 4th.

I really appreciate the way Lebron battled last night as it was obvious his jumper was off. He looked for the slightest crease in the Miami defense and attacked the basket without regard for human life. I agree DB, it would help Lebron tremendously if this team pushed more in transition, but hell, it would help the entire team as the Lakers half-court offense is rather meh.

One more win, one more Larry. That will anguish the Celtics fans and their ancient "dynasty" within a 10 team league.

Halfcourt offense is simplistic by design, IMO. This is year 1 of the Bron/AD era. If you go back to the year 1 of the Shaq/Kobe/Phil era, the offense was also a lot simpler than it was in year 2 or 3. The fact is, these guys are no different than Kawhi/George teaming up, it is just that due to their immense talents, efforts and great defensive coaching, the team was able to accomplish things immediately. The Lakers offense, should be better as time goes on, as they figure out more things. Year 1 plan was quite simple - Lebron is QB 1, Rondo QB2, they orchestrate offense, Vogel focuses on defense. I am assuming Kidd talks a lot to Rondo/Bron, as does Handy.

Our offense also bogs down IMO because we tend to go back to the Bron PG game. When we let Rondo run the offense with Bron playing off the ball, it is a thing of beauty. We do not mix it up enough between Bron and Rondo at PG. Bron needs to shift more often to the Kobe/Jordan role in the post, mid-wing area. Draw the attention. Rondo initiates. Rondo can set up Bron, or call for a screen and create team offense. Instead we see Bron do what I want Rondo to do, we can't really get AD the ball through traffic, and we end up seeing Bron play against the shot clock waiting for the best shot (which to his credit and IQ, he often gets for his teammate or himself).

And of course our running game is the best in the league, hands down. For some reason though, Bron is not pushing the ball in this series. I am trying to think why we are not pushing the ball as much, and my guess is that Miami is great at deflections and getting back in transition, things that you didn't see with Denver/Houtson.

Win or lose this series, Next season, I would definitely like to see more Lebron off the ball in the 4th. We need to trust other guys to make PG/QB plays. I like Lebron starting off games as a PG to set up AD. But he needs to close games in the Jordan/Kobe role, IMO. Or, we need to set up that role for AD. It's a shame Bron got AD so late in his career. These guys could have won 4-5 rings together in a 8 year span. Their chemistry and value together is as much as you saw with Shaq/Kobe. Just a shame Bron's time as a MVP level player is winding down.

Miami is actually a very good team. They can score and play good defense.
It was a good thing KCP showed up. He was a big difference.
AD defense on Butler was huge.
