Hi all,

About a week ago I lifted a very heavy ice chest out of a mini van. Not sure why I didn’t ask for help but I tweaked my back. For the past week I have been doing a heating pad now and then but it wasn’t killing me but I knew it was there.

Yesterday, I feel good and wanted to get a workout in. Did some walking on the treadmill and light weights. S
Stupid ass idea!!!

I woke up about midnight with, I guess, back spasms. I have never ever ever had so much pain in my life. I was literally crippled.

After a few hours of alternating cold and hot packs with Motrin, I was able to get into bed. I have heat on it now.

I am debating on going to urgent Carr to have it checked and maybe get muscle relaxers, which I hear, do help.

Any thoughts? Anyone experience this before?

Welcome to old age.

Go see a doctor. He'll likely prescribe anti-inflammatory meds and painkillers.

I have lower leg spasms. My doctor prescribed Diclofenac Sodium Topical Gel, 1%. It's OTC. In forms like BLUE-EMU, DICLOFENAC SODIUM TOPICAL GEL, 1%, VOLTREN. Read the label. Make sure DSTG is an ingredient.

Years ago I used to go snowboarding and tweaked my shoulder blades.....needless to say I was bedridden for weeks and basically stopped snowboarding.
The OTC pain patches and painkillers did little to nothing.

Yes, exactly.
53 years I have gone without back issues. One stupid trip the beach and tried to be strong and taking a 50 pound ice chest out of a car...stupid me.

Those can become habit-forming. My doctor took me off of them because of that danger. DICLOFENAC SODIUM TOPICAL GEL, 1% has been working fin

Go see your doctor. Follow his advice.

I have a chronically bad back -- mostly related to cycling. Well, to crashing, not to the cycling itself. I have a healed compression fracture and all sorts of other stuff going on in there, along with age-related changes.

The lifestyle-altering change for me was understanding what happens -- there's one specific muscle in my lower back on the right side that contracts. If I stretch out that muscle when I get up, when I go to bed, and when I feel it starting to act up, I can nip it in the bud. It's this stretch (sports bra is optional):

There's a bunch of other exercises you can do, but that one stretch does the trick for me. When I do it, I angle my back around to put as much leverage on that one muscle as I can.

^ I did that stretch and the first stretch on this link:

Both really helped with my sciatica.

Agree with everyone recommending stretching. Yoga changed my life.

I had a lot of back trouble in my 20s and 30s (even had to go to urgent care a few times). Things got better significantly once I started doing yoga on a semi-regular basis (about once a week or so).

May just be me, but you’re kind of hot.

Cat fishing will do that.

I had this issue last month, and I NEVER have back issues (except for one other time in my life). Seemed to come out of nowhere.

Overall, trying to be in a standing position as much as possible helped. There are also back relief creams that work surprisingly well - cold/hot compresses. Back scratchers to try and put pressure on certain areas in your back, to release any possible knots, etc. Other than that, just time itself was the main healer. The issue seemed to go away just as mysteriously as it came on.
