Influenza and Obesity: it's odd relationship and lessons for the Covid 19 pandemic.

Get some exercise folks
Anyone else read this? It suggests that not only do obese people retain the virus longer, their symptoms are more intense, causing them to spread the virus much more than a normal weight person. Finally an acceptable reason to fat-shame?

There's never a reason to fat shame. There are many reasons for obesity, metabolism being one. There are more but not being a expert I won't attempt to list them. I don't think people want to be obese, some can't help it.

Disagree. Most just can't put down the fork. It's pretty simple: eat more calories than your body needs to maintain, and you gain weight.

Yep. If being overweight was purely a physiological thing, Americans wouldn't be any fatter now than they were 50 years ago. We also wouldn't be the most obese populace in the world and far ahead of the worldwide average.

If you are talking about an individual by individual basis.
I'm sure registered dietitians and certified nutritionists would tell you that there are psychological reasons why people over eat as well. The overeating is a symptom of a deeper problem for some (maybe most) people. Same goes for eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia.

If we're talking big picture, corn subsidies and affordability of unhealthy vs. healthy food should probably be looked at as well.

That's still not a reason to fat shame. I equate it to smoking, it's a habit very hard to break.

You should definitely shame the (bleep) out of someone who still smokes cigarettes at this point.

Poor choice to equate. I'm not a fan of shaming. I'm more into trying to help break a habit. I don't think hurting a persons feelings because they have a weakness is a kind thing to do. IMO that's being insensitive.

Adults with Covid-19 about 'twice as likely' to say they have dined at a restaurant, CDC study suggests

Quote:
Adults who tested positive for Covid-19 were approximately twice as likely to have reported dining at a restaurant in the 14 days before becoming ill than those who tested negative, according to a new study from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"In addition to dining at a restaurant, case-patients were more likely to report going to a bar/coffee shop, but only when the analysis was restricted to participants without close contact with persons with known COVID-19 before illness onset," the researchers wrote.

Quote:
The tests were administered at 11 different health care facilities across 10 US states: California, Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Utah and Washington.

The researchers -- from the CDC and other institutions -- took a close look at how those patients responded to questions about wearing masks and various activities in the community, including whether they recently dined at a restaurant, hung out a bar or went to a gym, for instance.

Quote:
There were no significant differences between those who tested positive versus negative when it came to shopping, gathering with fewer than 10 people in a home, going to an office, going to a gym, going to a salon, using public transportation or attending religious gatherings, according to the study.

However, people who tested positive, the data showed, were more likely to have reported dining at a restaurant in the two weeks before they started to feel sick.

Quote:
"Reports of exposures in restaurants have been linked to air circulation. Direction, ventilation, and intensity of airflow might affect virus transmission, even if social distancing measures and mask use are implemented according to current guidance," the researchers wrote.

"Masks cannot be effectively worn while eating and drinking, whereas shopping and numerous other indoor activities do not preclude mask use."

We are very fortunate that we have so many health care workers who are willing to literally give their all to help treat the victims of Trump's Virus.

We're by far the fattest first world nation.

Look at your family 8mm films if your parents/grandparents took any from the 60s and you'll notice that everyone is thinner. Quite a contrast from today.

So my wife’s school had a positive case. 25 kids are now quarantining. 3 of the kids are in one of my wife’s classes. Apparently one of the kids in quarantine has a sibling in another of my wife’s classes and the sibling is still going to school while the other kid is “quarantining.” What a (bleep) show. Screw you DeathSantis for putting us in this position!!!

That's insanity.

My relatively inconsequential brush with Covid at the moment is that the show I work on has shut down production for two weeks due to a positive test on the main crew. Which now means when I finally (hopefully) return to work, it will be a full three months later than I normally would.
