Basically, bourbon is the next step from Jack and Coke. It’s a sweet, sugary version of whiskey that people like because it takes what they see as the edge off of true whisky.

So what is American whiskey vis-a-vis bourbon? What labels? |
The distinction isn’t really about labels. The distinction that makes bourbon American is that it is made from corn as opposed to barley.

Bourbon’s major characteristics are that it has to be 51% or more corn, and that it is aged in new charred oak barrels.
