I know LG has some quality film industry folks, so I thought I'd float a new thread looking for recommendations on how to best edit digital movies at home while also opening it up to general conversation about filmmaking, sound recording, what have you.
To start off: as an amateur looking to splice homemade footage with scenes from movies (downloaded, digital), what software do you think would provide the best bang for the buck? This'll be mostly home use with a handful of posts for social media clout.

The Best Prosumer Video Editing Software
I use the first one on the list: CyberLink PowerDirector.
No complaints, but I acquired mine via a t AT rr#n+.

There are a couple good free alternatives also, like kdenlive, davinci resolve or free version of lightworks. |

I use Avid professionally and I’m not familiar with some of these free ones. Premiere Pro might be a good option but it’ll cost you a monthly fee. _________________ 14-5-3-12 |

That is exactly what I was going to say. Premiere is probably the most forgiving about mixing different formats without having to transcoding etc. "d just add, stay away from Final Cut X. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

Are the versions we can buy as consumers the same as the ones you industry folks use? _________________ KOBE |

Yeah you can license AVID at home, also for a monthly fee. I prefer it to any others, but there is a bit of a learning curve as Mule outlined. Premiere Pro is probably the easiest to learn, especially if you’re fluent in other Adobe products like Photoshop. AVID also offers a free “lite” version of Media Composer that has a limited feature set but can probably get you through the basics. I haven’t really used the lite version much. _________________ 14-5-3-12 |

Thinking of going with the Premiere Pro option to start, but I'm worried about if I can still access/download the content I create while using it after I cancel my subscription. I can download, right?
What are the drawbacks? _________________ Under New Management |

Do most of these programs arrive at the same place? What I mean is, are they all capable of the same things? Is it just the UI, etc that differentiates them? _________________ KOBE |

All depends on what you want to do. Can’t speak to these other freeware apps but Premiere Pro and AVID are professional editing suites. If you’re looking for the bare bones basics you might be able to get away with something simpler, I just don’t know about them and haven’t used them. I should note that both Premiere and AVID will give you a free 30 day trial of their full software. I would assume going with a freeware budget option will come with compromises. _________________ 14-5-3-12 |

I think I'm going to start free since I'm a total newbie and then move onto Avid or Premiere, but I thought this prompt (in the image attached to the tweet) was funny:
https://twitter.com/labuzamovies/status/1301197676373970944
I kind of want to cut my home movies like I'm the Academy Award winning editor of Bohemian Rhapsody - just constant 5 second jump cuts. _________________ Under New Management |

Let me just note from experience that editing requires a great deal of skill. _________________ Under New Management |

Cathy is right about Da Vinci, it is one of the best movie editors out there. I may be mistaken but it is free and unlike Premiere Pro doesn't need any subscriptions.. In case you need to make a slideshow I would highly recommend that you pay attention to Movavi Slideshow Maker for its highly intuitive interface (unlike Premiere Pro) and tons of useful functions like 40+ titles, 100+ transitions, dozens of filters and so on! Here is the site!

I've tried editing family videos in years pass with Corel's version. I found it overwhelming. _________________ KOBE |

I've spent a few hours at it over the past few days inbetween other work, and even with YouTube tutorials...boy howdy! are there a lot of widgets on these things.
I'm working through the visual stuff ojay now, but accurate sound syncing is the next hurdle. _________________ Under New Management |

I had a part time video business in the late 90's. I used NEWTEK's Video Toaster/Flyer for 4-5 years and several other products since then. The Toaster/Flyer isn't round any more.
I used Vegas Video for a few videos.
I then switched to Vegas Movie Studio which is a "light" version of Vegas Video.
Around 8 years ago I switched to Video Studio which has since been bought by Corel.
I edit around 5-10 videos a year ranging from 1-2 camera sporting events (grandson's basketball & indoor box lacrosse games) to 3 camera 2 mic music and dance shows where I live.
For the single camera sports events it is pretty easy to:
-import the camera footage (you just copy the camera footage to your computer and link to it in the software). You can also include youtube and other videos that you have access to.
-cut out the portion of the video you don't want.
-zoom in on portions of the video
-slow down, speed up, or reverse the direction of the video
-add music
-add titles.
-correct the color balance
For the 3 camera dance recital type of videos it is pretty easy to:
-sync the 3 cameras and external mics together.
-switch from one camera view to another
NOTE: The multi camera edits are much more complicated than the single camera edits.
IMHO:
PROS
-Video Studio is easier to learn an use than Vegas Video or Movie Studio versions that I used.
-Video Studio has enough capability to do what most amateur video folks might want to do.
-It has enough capability for event (weddings and such) videographers.
There are ample tutorials on youtube that explain how to use VS
-**Most importantly there is a very active user forum where you can get almost any question about the software answered in a day or less.
CONS
-There will be a learning curve with all of the software mentioned in this thread.
-There are a lot of buttons and "gadgets" on the user interface. Even though I am pretty familiar with the software I might accidentally click a button and get a screen that I never saw before.
-There have been instances where Corel releases a new release and new bugs are introduced.
RECOMMENDATION
When evaluating software look for active support forums where most of the posters are long time users of the product. They usually know more than the vendor support staff.
Also, look for free tutorials on youtube and on the vendor site |
