475.) of yore / yesteryear

words only white people can use

I used of yore, disproving your theory. Believe it or not, my memory of you posting this only hit me right after I typed it. I had to come back here and search for it. I used the offending term in a YT vid description for an NPZ recap of the Lakers' Gm 5 closeout win over Portland in the 1983 WCSFs (after Jim Paxson was caught on camera in a huddle advising his mates to knock Kareem's ass into the basket, "who effin cares?!"). Actual use of term in sentence below regarding solid big forward Wayne Cooper. Now, how do you answer for your theory being rendered utterly nullified, Pat Z?

Wayne Cooper (a decent player of yore who didn't get a lot of press, usually played well against LA at Port and Denver).

I un-ironically use yesteryear, too, even before you posted this.

420) "Wooooooooowuh..."

I've been noticing this catching on as a response to anything. Long, drawn out "wooooooowuh..." That translates to, "hm". Someone who says it once usually repeats it over and over.

Might already be listed, but these dunskies on MSNBC, both anchor and commentators are using "baked in" or "baked in the cake" too much. It doesn't take long for these people to make a saying repugnant. Enough of that. And stop with "that's a lot to unpack" or "let's unpack this".

That's 417. I can't count snowflake. It's already in there sans doubt. DuncanIdaho got "let's unpack this" two pages ago.

415) touchstone

"She's my touchstone." Chic word only. Less corny than "she's the wind beneath my wings", but it's the same concept. And it's like, woopty doo, I'm YOUUUR damn touchstone. I exist to make YOU feel better about yourself, huh?!" How great. Anyway, CMB, you are my touchstone.

Did you sleep with my best friend?

Um, well, yeah I guess I did.

How could you do that; you said you love me.

I'm sorry. It didn't really mean anything. I'm really sorry.

How could you that with her (or him)?

I wasn't thinking. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. You don't know how sorry I am. . . .

Lather, rinse and repeat about a dozen times.

********

The expression is too often used as an excuse for an unkind or stupid act or deed. It is too often an empty retort when there is nothing else to say. It is too often meaningless. It is too often feeling sorry for yourself. It does little, if anything, to change the situation, un-ring the bell, or make another person feel better.
