I told you it was all a big con and shell game. With hurricane season coming and predicted to be one of the worst to date, Trump is trying to steal money from FEMA to toss out 5 weeks of crumbs to unemployed (they had been getting $600 a week).

Quote:
Jeff Stein @JStein_WaPo

To recap:

1/ Evictions: No eviction moratorium or new rental $, asks HUD to "consider" if evictions should stop

2/ Unemployment: Uses $44B from FEMA to cover $300/week benefit for ~5 more weeks

3/ Taxes: Option to defer payroll tax payment, but w/o new law they'll still be due

And it's not clear he could actually shift the funds without approval.

For our "conservative" and "Republican" lurkers -- here is Trump laid bare by one of your own:

Quote:
Steve Schmidt @SteveSchmidtSES

I find it necessary to reach for the language and colorful colloquialisms of my native land, New Jersey, in order to express my feelings about today’s event in Bedmimster. It was a (bleep) travesty. Truly. An utter (bleep) disgrace.

The President of the United States of America stood behind the Seal of his office framed by American flags and his private club’s membership slurring and raving about his victimization. His titanic self pity was only exceeded by his dishonesty and uncontrolled lying. His lying was only 2.

Subordinate to his staggering idiocy, ignorance, ineptitude and incompetence. The incompetence, even after all this time, shocks the conscience. 162,000 Americans are dead and the economy is shattered. So many more will die. The evictions, foreclosures and small business closings
are just beginning.

We are in the early hours of one of the greatest tragedies in our countries history. None of it had to be, but it has happened because Donald Trump is President. His malice, stupidity, ego and insecurity are a lethal combination. He has wrecked this country 4/

in less than four years. He has induced a national nosedive, a decline that is precipitous, dangerous and humiliating. The world is more dangerous. American soldiers are hunted like animals by Taliban killers who are paid bounties by Russian killers and Trump does nothing 5/

But KowTow to Putin and advance his agenda. Trump has divided the country and pitted Americans against each other. He has loosed violence against Peacefully assembled US Citizens and deployed militarized paramilitary forces to escalate tensions in American cities in the name of 6

Law and order when the real purpose and mission is to stoke the embers of chaos and create Fear. Fear, built on a mountain of lies, is the Autocrats sword and shield. Trump stokes fear to abuse his power and press forward with his assaults on the rule of law, our essential 7/

Institutions and our national comity all in the name of his corruption, aggrandizement and cult of personality. It is a despicable hour in the life of this country. This will be ended because it must end. We will lose the country if Trump isn’t repudiated. Make no mistake 8/

About the intentions of a President who is openly undermining the 231 year old tradition of American elections. He is undermining the legitimacy of the coming election with no regard for the consequences to liberal democracy here and around the world. Fascism didn’t rise 9/

In the thirties because it was strong. It rose because Democracy was weak. American Democracy is weak, decayed and led by an illiberal man who, I’d he could would cancel the election, lock up his political opponents, enrich his friends and remain in power for life 10/

Trump is the greatest failure in American History. No American has failed history’s test in a more spectacular fashion. His stoking of racial tensions and a cold civil war in our land will live in infamy. His disgrace will be eternal.

Not enough scary news out there for ya?

Boycotted. Criticized. But Fox News Leads the Pack in Prime Time.

In June and July, Fox News was the highest-rated television channel in the prime-time hours of 8 to 11 p.m. Not just on cable. Not just among news networks. All of television. The average live Fox News viewership in those hours outstripped cable rivals like CNN, MSNBC and ESPN, as well as the broadcast networks ABC, CBS and NBC, according to Nielsen.

From the COVID thread referring to Biker rally in South Dakota:

I have a great idea. There should be a giant meeting of enthusiasts for a certain hobby (I'll just randomly say, oh, motorcycle gang cosplayers). Get a couple hundred thousand of them to gather in a small town somewhere. Just a good old time. A weekend to celebrate their hobby. They can all gather there for a great time.

Here's where the genius of my plan comes together. They travel from all over the country to get to this gathering and they drive themselves there from wherever they live. After the weekend, they all drive back home. As a bonus, they're all extremely cavalier about the virus!

What could possibly go wrong?

These two things are directly connected.

Yes, one more brilliant ad. But, as Rachel mentioned on her show Friday (the segment with Trump suing a small Wisconsin TV station for an ad with only Trump's own words), many of these brilliant ads are not being run on TV.

It's fascism entwined with white supremacy and religious zealotry. They might as well be Al-Queda or the Taliban. The truth is they have collectively now killed more Americans than either of those groups. Those 250,000 maskless bikers congregating in South Dakota might as well be suicide bombers.

Just wanted to point out when I refer to "people" above who know they've been hurt, I am referring not to the 90% who will stick with Trump no matter what, but to the 10% of Republicans, and Independents or Obama/Trump voters who "took a chance" in 2016 but may not be willing to put their lives in his hands for another 4 years.

We sometimes act like the 90% of Republicans who stick with him are all important. But they are a minority. A riled up angry vocal minority, yes. But they do not represent the majority of this country and every good and decent person must not only speak up and protest, but vote. Above all. Vote.

Because not only must Trump be crushed, Trumpism must be crushed and shamed and repudiated in 2020 and beyond.

And for our "both sides" friends - there is no "both" sides are the same. The Democratic party still believes in Democracy but the Republican party would be happy to have fascist authoritarian rule as long as they are in charge. The Republican Senate has demonstrated that beyond all doubt.

From today's New York Times:

NYT: ‘Christianity Will Have Power’ - Donald Trump made a promise to white evangelical Christians, whose support can seem mystifying to the outside observer.

Quote:
The 67-minute speech Mr. Trump gave that day at Dordt University, a Christian college in Sioux Center, would become infamous, instantly covered on cable news and to this day still invoked by his critics. But the line that gained notoriety — the promise that he “could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody” and “wouldn’t lose any voters” — overshadowed another message that morning.

“I will tell you, Christianity is under tremendous siege, whether we want to talk about it or we don’t want to talk about it,” Mr. Trump said.

Christians make up the overwhelming majority of the country, he said. And then he slowed slightly to stress each next word: “And yet we don’t exert the power that we should have.”

If he were elected president, he promised, that would change. He raised a finger.

“Christianity will have power,” he said. “If I’m there, you’re going to have plenty of power, you don’t need anybody else. You’re going to have somebody representing you very, very well. Remember that.”

Nine days later, the Iowa caucuses kicked off the most polarizing road to the White House in memory. Mr. Trump largely lost the evangelicals of Sioux County that day: Only 11 percent of Republicans caucused for him. But when November came, they stood by him en masse: 81 percent of the county voted for him. And so did 81 percent of white evangelical voters nationwide.

Quote:
Evangelicals did not support Mr. Trump in spite of who he is. They supported him because of who he is, and because of who they are. He is their protector, the bully who is on their side, the one who offered safety amid their fears that their country as they know it, and their place in it, is changing, and changing quickly. White straight married couples with children who go to church regularly are no longer the American mainstream. An entire way of life, one in which their values were dominant, could be headed for extinction. And Mr. Trump offered to restore them to power, as though they have not been in power all along.

Quote:
The Trump era has revealed the complete fusion of evangelical Christianity and conservative politics, even as white evangelical Christianity continues to decline as a share of the national population. There are some signs of fraying at the edges of the coalition, among some women and young people. If even a small fraction turns away from Mr. Trump, it could make the difference to his re-election.

But even if he loses in November, mainstream evangelical Christianity has made plain its deepest impulses and exposed where the majority of its believers pledge allegiance.

The Devil told them they would have power if they sided with him, and they said yes it's a deal. If there were a Jesus, he would be proverbially rolling over in his grave.

Of course the article and the people interviewed don't really acknowledge the inherent racism and bigotry and hypocrisy of their position. They see themselves as victims who just want to hang onto their "way of life" while the big bad people in the cities just don't understand them.

We actually have freedom of religion in this country. We don't persecute people for their religion. We verbally persecute people for being hateful vile racists, bigots and misogynists. Go to church 7 days a week if it makes you happy. No cares. Unless you try to force your religious dogma on the rest of us, then we say no thanks. But when we say "no thanks" they think we're persecuting them for their religion.

To the people who will not follow common sense and wear a mask because that’s what liberals do, I would like to remind you that liberals think it is a very common sense and scientifically supported view that jumping off of tall buildings without a parachute is bad. Very bad. We don’t do it. At all. Have a nice flight.

The reality is that conservatives get most of their “news” from a relatively small group of sites. They tend to watch television news a lot more than liberals. Fox is their New York Times.

41% of the nation approves of Trump. Throw in the fact that in the last 20 years, only 54% of the population has voted in Presidential elections (and that's actually historically high) and that you can be damn sure the Republicans are going to show up this time, it's going to be much closer than I'm comfortable with.

And then there is the obvious fact that the GOP is going lie and cheat every way possible to win. The Dems are going to have to have a Blue Tsunami to ensure Trump doesn't manipulate his way to a second term.

The scary part is, even if he loses and actually acknowledges it without much resistance, the disgusting underbelly of the nation he unleashed is going to go ape (bleep). Things are going to be very ugly in 2021, no matter what happens in November.

lol, that is so sad but so true. Anecdotally, I visited a couple in their home a few times whom I knew to be hardcore conservative. My visiting was business not pleasure. I saw that the husband had Fox News running all day in the background of the living room and the wife had Fox News running all day in the background of the dining room. No matter what else they were doing they had this dual video system constantly running to feed their brainwashed minds and increase Fox's ratings.

Democrats Decry “Sabotage” After “Friday Night Massacre” at Postal Service
By DANIEL POLITI
AUG 08, 20206:21 PM

Several Democrats accused the Trump administration of trying to sabotage the country’s mail system after a broad restructuring of the United States Postal Service that some have characterized as a “Friday Night Massacre.” Postmaster General Louis DeJoy moved forward with a significant reorganization of the Postal Service leadership along with a hiring freeze for leadership positions. The reorganization involves the reassignment or displacement of 23 USPS executives, including some who had been at the Postal Service for decades. Among the targets of the reorganization were the two top executives who oversee daily operations at the Postal Service.

The Postal Service said that “the new organization will align functions based on core business operations and will provide more clarity and focus on what the Postal Service does best; collect, process, move and deliver mail and packages.” But analysts say the new structure gives more power to DeJoy, a big Trump ally who has been under scrutiny lately amid delivery delays and the way that could impact the election at a time when voting by mail is expected to soar because of the pandemic.

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — Whether President Donald Trump has the constitutional authority to extend federal unemployment benefits by executive order remains unclear. Equally up in the air is whether states, which are necessary partners in Trump’s plan to bypass Congress, will sign on.

Trump announced an executive order Saturday that extends additional unemployment payments of $400 a week to help cushion the economic fallout of the pandemic. Congress had approved payments of $600 a week at the outset of the coronavirus outbreak, but those benefits expired Aug. 1 and Congress has been unable to agree on an extension. Many Republicans have expressed concern that a $600 weekly benefit, on top of existing state benefits, gives people an incentive to stay unemployed.

But under Trump’s plan, the $400 a week requires a state to commit to providing $100.

Many states are already facing budget crunches caused by the pandemic. Asked at a news conference how many governors had signed on to participate, Trump answered: “If they don’t, they don’t. That’s up to them.”

Joe Arpaio: Former Arizona sheriff fails to regain old job
8 August 2020

Joe Arpaio, the controversial former sheriff known for his harsh immigration tactics, has failed in a bid to regain his old job in the US state of Arizona.

The self-confessed "toughest sheriff" was beaten in the Republican primary for the role in Maricopa County by his former deputy.

Mr Arpaio, 88, was convicted of criminal contempt after defying a court order to stop traffic patrols targeting suspected undocumented immigrants.

He was pardoned by President Trump.

Mr Arpaio said this year's race was his last attempt to run for public office. In 2018, he lost a bid to run for US Senate in Arizona.

Mr Arpaio, who was sheriff for 24 years, lost by about 6,000 votes, according to the Maricopa County Elections Department.

His former aide Jerry Sheridan will now face Democrat Paul Penzone who removed Mr Arpaio from office in 2016 in a landslide victory.

In the run up to the election, Mr Arpaio vowed to continue his controversial policing tactics with policies that included housing county jail inmates in tents and regular immigration sweeps.

During his time as sheriff, he housed inmates in tents, forced them to wear pink underwear and brought back chain gangs.

He rose to national prominence for his sweeps of undocumented immigrants in Hispanic communities and for detaining Spanish-speakers under suspicion of being in the country irregularly.

Mr Arpaio was convicted in July 2011 of deliberately violating an injunction halting his practice of detaining migrants who are not suspected of having committed a state crime. Only federal officers have jurisdiction over immigration.

He faced six months in jail but was benefited by President Donald Trump's first presidential pardon.

Sen. Ron Johnson denies getting dirt on Biden from Ukrainian lawmaker, blasts Blumenthal for 'twisting' classified briefings

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisc., is hitting back against a scathing op-ed in the Washington Post by Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., arguing that he never received documents relating to Joe Biden’s family nor did the CIA refuse to brief him on the matter.

In a lengthy thread on Twitter, Johnson denied Blumenthal’s claims that he received documents relating to Joe Biden and his son's activities in Ukraine from the son of a former Soviet intelligence agent and blasted the Connecticut Democrat for his “twisting of classified briefings and repeating of false news reports.”

“[Blumenthal’s] twisting of classified briefings and repeating of false news reports is beyond the pale,” Johnson tweeted. “It is a flat-out lie that I received the documents from Ukrainians that Democrats keep claiming. And they know it. It is unconscionable that Democrats and the press continue to report it.”

Coronavirus negotiation 'makes me wonder' if Democrats want to tank economy: Navarro

President Trump signed 4 executive orders on Saturday aimed at providing Americans with ongoing relief until a deal can be reached

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said Sunday that he's beginning to wonder if Democrats are purposely stalling coronavirus stimulus negotiations to tank the economy in an attempt to make President Trump look bad.

"There is this theory, Chuck, that the Democrats would prefer to see the economy go into the tank for another 90 days because that harms the president," Navarro told Chuck Todd on Sunday in an interview on "Meet the Press." "I hope that Capitol Hill hasn't become that cynical. But watching these negotiations makes me wonder, because we've been willing to bend."

PELOSI SLAMS TRUMP'S EXECUTIVE ACTIONS AS AN 'ILLUSION' IN 'FOX NEWS SUNDAY' INTERVIEW

Talks have been stalled for weeks as Democrats have asked for more than $3 trillion in the relief bill while Republicans are looking for a narrower package around $1 trillion. Democrats on Thursday offered to lower their request by $1 trillion if Republicans were to increase their proposal by $1 trillion. However, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Friday the idea was a "non-starter."

Meanwhile, President Trump signed four executive orders on Saturday aimed at providing Americans with ongoing relief until a deal can be reached, including a $400-per-week supplemental unemployment payment for out-of-work Americans, an extension of student loan relief, protections from evictions for renters and homeowners, and a payroll tax holiday through the end of the year for Americans earning less than $100,000.
