Suburban McMansions are the next housing bubble and a lot of boomers will find that their six bedroom monstrosity in an "exclusive" community hasn't retained a whole lot of equity when younger people don't have the funds and/or the inclination to get locked into 20-year mortgages for them.

As a follow-up to Omar's post a few pages back about taxes, the IRS is good actually - funding, staffing, and empowering the IRS to go after wealthy tax cheats and corporate offshoring should be a priority in a Biden administration and would be good for America.

Also, since there are some people in the entertainment industry who post here, let's please see a procedural show about IRS agents taking down fat cat tax cheats instead of another one albout cops or prosecutors:

"Tax evasion is theft, Geoff Bozos! How does it feel stealing school lunches out of the mouths of needy children, scumbum? Make you feel like a big man?"

Anyway, you get the idea.

I thought it was to launder money through Netflix?

But seriously, folks, if you make it, the viewers will come.

In general, "rich people" do not "cheat" on their taxes. Heck, few rich people even know or really understand their tax filings. They (their representatives / tax attorneys) influence the rules of the game, and then play the game at a high level. There is and always will be only one solution to make taxation more fair....and that is simplification of the tax code. You can make a little more progressive or a little less....but simplification will take their influence out of making the rules and their ability to play at a higher level.

As with many things that have a political bend....there can never be an agreement among the masses in regards to how to simplify....which allows the wealthy to set back and continue to use the current system to avoid paying massive amounts of taxes. Lets be honest....someone could show you black and white evidence that the wealthy would pay more in taxation under a version of a flat tax or a national sales tax, but because it is not your preferred method of taxation, you would likely be unwilling to even discuss (if you were a lawmaker)....and I am sure there is a vice versa in there also...thus we continue with an extremely flawed tax code that mostly sticks it to the lower to upper middle class.

I've partied with Steve Forbes. He offers no solutions.

ETA: tying the gordion knot yourself and then cutting through it as a "bold solution" to the problem you created in the first place is a con game.

I agree, but even the recent simplification was an over-politicized disaster. Increasing the standard deduction helps those in lower tax base, lower home value states which coincidentally align with red states, while effectively increasing the taxes of those in metropolitan areas (blue state "coastal elites"). In addition, that's only looking at the tax code for individuals; the corporate component needs to be examined in terms of transfer costs, which are used to hide profits and have the undesirable effect of encouraging companies to build operations overseas.

However the real "F You" with the Trump tax code revision was to rob the US taxpayer and exacerbate the budget deficit problem. The tax rates to corporations was significantly reduced. That act effected a transference of wealth from the middle class and upper middle class to the wealthy, and the wealthy were not even US based. When you consider that approximately 35% of our domestic equity issues are owned by foreigners, you realize that Trump enriched foreign interests at the expense of the US taxpayers.

That had the desired effect of raising the DJ and S&P, which the GOP used as propaganda, that Trump was benefiting the US economy.

A charcuterie board is what you nibble on with cocktails before or after a proper dinner.

Not trying to get into the weeds....just making a general point that if the Conservatives and Progressives could ever find a mutually acceptable simplification of the tax code.....just make it as simple as both could agree to, wealthy Republicans and Democrats would not be happy with the results. Currently the tax code breaks off some deductions and exemptions for the working stiffs, who are distracted by their marginal rate while massive loopholes are created for the wealthy in both political parties....and since their tax attorneys basically wrote in the loopholes, they can easily take advantage of them.

Conservatives and Progressives should find that imperfect but acceptable middle ground and eliminate legal evasion. Take away the mortgage interest deduction, child credits, electric car credits....but lower the marginal rate to offset some of those lost credits/exemptions. Create a marginal floor that the first X amount of dollars are barely taxed ($25K? $35K? whatever works...), and remove all of the high end loopholes and ceiling on taxes collected. It is actually much easier than they would want us to think, and I am sure you and I could easily find an acceptable middle ground that would be fair to everyone. Right now the tax code has became a political tool. I think everyones marginal rates would be lower than expected.....but the wealthy would pay in much more than they often currently pay.

I have never understood why so many resist simplification when it would benefit the masses. For example....just making up numbers, but something like this....

$1 - $29,999 - 2.5% Marginal Rate
$30K - $99,999 - 10% Marginal Rate
$100K - $249,999 - 15% Marginal Rate
over $249,999 - 20% Marginal Rate

All income, passive and active taxed at the same rate....no deductions, no exemptions, no personal write offs, no capital gains taxed at a lower rate, etc. Again, I just made up the marginal rates....but just identify the numbers that work and plug them in. Personally, I would change the marginal rates annually and tie them to the previous years Federal Expenditures......which should make every taxpayer invested in how the government is spending their tax dollars in a near real time manner. Taxpayers would become much less tolerant of waste when they know they would have to pay for it over the next 12 months. If that was the system....don't you think there would be more consequences when Lockheed Martin was 12 months behind schedule and $4 Billion over budget? Someone in oversight would probably be replaced in the next election.....

I don't think it matters that white actors voiced non-white characters on the Simpsons. Women have voiced boy characters in the past for alot of animation projects. And that didn't bother me either. All I care about is the voice.

Now I know some are offended by how stereotypical Apu is as a character. That's a fair criticism and a whole other story.

Well, some values have changed in 30 years. Every original Simpsons character is a stereotype, we've just chosen one or two to be offended by.

For example, I think it's fair for Italian Americans to be upset with being depicted mostly as mobsters as well.

Once someone feels hurt. In general, it's nearly impossible to convince them not to be offended. It's a tale almost as old as comedy itself. Comedy (or comedian) says something. Some people think it's funny. Some people don't. Some people think it's offensive.

Comedy or comedian has the right to tell the joke. Audience has the right to respond to it, whether it's positive or negative.

My understanding of the whole Apu controversy is that an Indian American comedian was mocked at school growing up by white kids using the Apu voice and then as an adult he made a documentary about how insensitive the character is/was.

The Simpsons should've wrapped it up at least fifteen years ago regardless, but Apu was one of the show's best characters and the writers clearly liked him and put in the effort to flesh out his background in well-intentioned ways that other stereotyped characters like Groundskeeper Willie never got. Of course he's still a Springfield resident so he does dumb stuff and bad things befall him, but he's maybe the least dumb person in the whole town this side of Smithers and Lisa.

imagine finishing puberty and then you're matthew broderick

matthew broderick (bleep) sucks. ruins every movie he's in. when i saw the cable guy as a kid i thought i hated it because jim carrey was garbage in it. turns out the cable guy is a great movie but it suffers from matthew broderick. nobody would try that hard to be his friend.

He's a smarmy creep which is why he works in Cable Guy and Election, imo. When movies try to play him as sweet or cool or charming they suck because he doesn't have the acting range to not be the jerk he is IRL.

Also he killed two women in Ireland while driving drunk in 1987, got a slap on the wrist because he was wealthy and famous, and then years later he ghosted the brother of one of the victims who was willing to reconcile with him.
