According to worldometer, Florida set a new record for daily deaths at 186 today.

Or, according to Trump and DeSantis, Florida is continuing to do a great job.

And pushing right ahead with schools opening in two to three weeks. The county my wife works in just sent out notifications that over 50% of parents want in-person school. So in-person school is what they are going to get apparently. We’re trying to figure out what she’s going to do. We live in a different county than she works and we elected a virtual option for our daughter. But for my wife months of staying at home and doing the right thing to stay safe and it will all go out the window because Trump wants schools open in the middle of this spike.

We had 160 something TOTAL cases in Florida when schools shut down in March. We are now averaging 10,000 a day, what the hell sense does it make to open schools for in-person now?

Meanwhile, Baron Trumps school will not be returning in September due to fear of COVID transmission.

Also according to worldometer, the US had the most deaths, 1244, in two months.

Not great enough!

Today, so far, Florida has recorded 216 deaths according to worldometer.

IHME has updated their projections. As it stands today, the US is projected to have between 198,831 and 252,068 deaths by Nov. 1--though let's not forget, they won't be stopping there. As has been the case, the ultimate number will be a factor of how well the people respond to masks and social distancing, and how smart the states are regarding their easing plans.

I guess this means it will be closer to the 252K number.

Way back in February or March I recall estimates of a quarter-million U.S. deaths. They thought that was the ceiling -- but now it's the floor. Every politician who was complicit in pushing false CV propaganda belongs in jail, IMO.

Yep. On May 4th, the IHME estimates were between 95,092 and 242,890. The lower number, of course, could only occur if the Federal Government and the states showed real leadership in convincing people (or mandating if that failed) to socially distance and wear masks, and to be smart with shelter in place orders, and the subsequent easing of them. The Federal Government failed miserably in many areas, many states (typically red southern states) failed miserably in nearly all areas, while other states, such as California, did well in some areas but not so well in other's.

As such, one could interpolate that these actions and lack of actions were responsible for some ~150,000 deaths in the United States of America.

As an aside, we must not forget that Bush was responsible for some 110,000 - 600,000 deaths by the various studies and estimates.

And the people keep voting for Republicans.

Worldometers is predicting about 232K US deaths by November 1. We're at just under 157K now.

This thread makes me feel helpless in the worst way. November can't come soon enough. RIP to all those our country has lost.

Just in time for school, 2 new studies conclude small kids carry and transmit COVID-19 just fine

Quote:
The first study, published in JAMA, is peer-reviewed. As Haseltine notes, researchers examined findings from a pediatric hospital in Chicago, the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital.

The Chicago study examines the concentration of the SARS-CoV-2 in the nasopharynx, or the upper region of the throat that connects to the nasal passages, of children and adults. According to the results, children 5 years and younger who develop mild to moderate Covid-19 symptoms have 10 to 100 times as much SARS-CoV-2 in the nasopharynx as older children and adults.

Whenever these young children cough, sneeze, or shout, they expel virus-laden droplets from the nasopharynx into the air. If they have as much as one hundred times the amount of virus in their throat and nasal passages as adults, it only makes sense that they would spread the virus more efficiently. The study also shows that children from the ages of 5 to 17, also with mild to moderate Covid-19 symptoms, have the same amount of virus in the nasopharynx as adults age 18 and above.

The second study examines contact tracing findings conducted in Trento, Italy. While that study is in pre-print and still awaiting peer review, its results are consistent with those in the Chicago study. As Forbes’ Haseltine reports:

The researchers found that although young children had a somewhat lower risk of infection than adults and were less likely to become ill, children age 14 and younger transmit the virus more efficiently to other children and adults than adults themselves. Their risk of transmitting Covid-19 was 22.4 percent—more than twice that of adults aged 30 to 49, whose rate of contagiousness was about 11 percent. “Although childhood contacts were less likely to become cases,” they wrote, “children were more likely to infect household members.”

Some really important and relevant data when trying to understand the totality of the coronavirus menace. I'm uncertain of the numbers, but the point stands regardless.

The question 'How disease with 1% mortality shut down United States? is one Trump would ask and not view the entire canvas. The overall picture paints devastating numbers. Ignoring the collateral numbers can and will have a ravaging affect.

Until we get leadership the country is in big doo doo.

Actually came across my first "door to door" salesmen since COVID started. they were, of course, solar salesmen. I didn't even open the door for them...was just leaving my house, and they were walking up.

I was pissed that they were going around door to door at a time when ppl are supposed to be socially distancing.
