Just watched it on Netflix for the first time. Maybe it was because it came out in 2004, but I'd never really heard anything about this movie before even though it won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Was/is this a famous movie?

It was voted among the best 25 movies made since 2000 by the New York Times a few years ago.

Yeah, I feel like it is even a fairly common pop culture reference....or at least was for a while after it was released.

Where was it referenced? I guess Clint Eastwood is a big name, but for some reason I thought this was some obscure movie.

Eastwood, Freeman, Jolie, best picture, big box office. Yup, sounds obscure

Hilary Swank was in it not Angelina Jolie

However yeah there was a lot of press over this back then. I remember going to watch it at a movie theater in Michigan.

Better actor, but no box office draw.

How is she the budget version when she has two academy awards for main actress and Jolie has none?

Git dem haters CC. It was a good movie. What happened to Frank? Did Eddie inherit the gym? Danger is still looking for a championship fight.

I loved that part where Scrap knocked out Shawrelle.

Yeah!!! Morgan Freeman won best supporting actor for Million Dollar Baby.

I kind of missed the significance of Shawrelle and Danger. What did they add to the plot?

Until he finally noticed Maggie, I think both of them represented the lack of hope Walt had in realizing his dream of managing a championship fighter after he lost Big Willie. Danger was the one with no talent and Shawrelle was the one with all the talent but no heart.

I was surprised by how much I reacted at the ending. I guess the story moved me.

I thought it was sort of problematic with the way it presented being disabled.

Thanks for mentioning that. I was referring to the part just prior to that whole aspect, in the ring, and I had forgotten that whole aspect. Saw it in the theater so many years ago. I do remember it now.

And it came out towards the end of the lengthy Terry Schiavo legal battle and a broader cultural debate (or culture war) over assisted suicide.

Because she doesn't command remotely the same $ rate as Jolie?

Me too. It wasn't the typical Hollywood ending. Kinda wanted to see Maggie get up and Frankie win one.

Jolie has international status....Swank is not on that level and never has been. There are a million actors more talented than the Roc.....but almost all of them cost a fraction of his price tag for a role.

A great The Office episode..

Is Hilary Swank Hot?

^^^^ I don't remember which actress it was who said being beautiful limits the roles offered.
