we are number one now
this will never be over until the vaccine comes out I guess.
the infected are still running around the partying and bringing the virus to everyone

Had to quit my side job when they decided to eat and have bday parties in office with masks off, also planning events with 2k to 3k people in banquet halls, good luck with that.

If the country doesn't take California as an example, compare it to New York and slow down on opening COVID-19 will claim many more lives.

This can't be blamed directly on Republicans. This is on Californians for not socially distancing properly. Maybe Republicans can be blamed for a lack of leadership at the federal level, for trying to move too fast (which even Newsome fell victim to--thought this does not excuse him), and in a general sense for not emphasizing masks, other protocol, and ignoring CDC guidelines upon opening their states.

But really, the lion's share of the problem in our great state is with Californians, us, and an absence of individual responsibility.

Republican Support for Wearing Masks Leaps to 58% After Trump Wears One in Public for First Time

Example number 9,356 of how Trump (bleep) this all up from the beginning. There'd be no meaningful anti-mask movement if he had just got on board from the get go.

You're right. My blame in that post was completely misplaced.

Reality is Americans should have had a social contract with their neighbors and fellow man/woman to do whatever it took to stop the spread and we failed miserably. With the absence of available treatments/vaccinations for the time being, we should've exercised extreme caution and we didn't.

It's such a mess. We really needed a war-time effort and singular focus. Leadership has been all over the place even after getting a late start.

By now everyone, not just health care providers, should have N95s. It should also have been seen as a patriotic duty to wear them to get our economy back and running and our schools functioning.

Testing was an absurd joke early on with all the red tape and hoops people had to jump through just to get a test...as well as the red tape to engage other testing facilities quickly. We also should have hired tons of out of work people to work on contact tracing.

We needed to go hard at this from the top down. Instead, it's just felt like every one was on their own.

Herd immunity and/or a vaccine (treatment) are the only answers, as far as I can see. Even here, in Progressive California, we erred in our overall response.

Instead, we chose to half-ass it because it was easier and now we're on full lockdown while half the world is able to open up a little and get back to business.

All those people screwing around flushed 4 months of quarantine down the drain for the rest of us.

Herd immunity is a pipe dream. It has been tried and failed miserably.

It most certainly can be achieved via a vaccine. Now maybe you are suggesting that some 20% or so won't get the vaccine, and I suppose that is possible, but I'm guessin' that the 80% or so who will, coupled with all who have, and will have, contracted the disease by that time, will be enough for herd immunity.

Sweden, who was the poster child for not doing any kind of lockdown, is seeing less than 10% of the population with herd immunity. They definitely haven't been able to achieve that. Interestingly, their death rate has been dropping (although is still several times worse than every other Nordic country and also worse than the US). I feel like chalking up the declining death rate up to people taking personal responsibility and following government recommendations rather than mandates. (But that's just a guess on my part.)

Instead, we chose to half-ass it because it was easier and now we're on full lockdown while half the world is able to open up a little and get back to business.

All those people screwing around flushed 4 months of quarantine down the drain for the rest of us.

Appropriately addressing a pandemic in the most influential country in the world is hard. Passing responsibility to states and counties is easy. Throughout his whole life, our current President has avoided the hard for the easy. And we're all paying the price for it.

I can't help but think of this article.

Valerie Jarrett Reflects on First Obama Term: 'Hard Things Are Hard'

"On his desk he has a little plaque that says, 'Hard things are hard,'" she said of Obama. "You know what? They are."

Herd immunity is a pipe dream. It has been tried and failed miserably.

Depends on what you're talking about. If you're talking about the Sweden experiment of just letting it run rampant to build it....yeah, we knew going in that that wasn't going to work.

But that's the whole point of vaccinating -- all of the benefits of personal & herd immunity without all the death & destruction to get there. Of course, we still need a vaccine first. And right now, we don't know the threshold for herd immunity (that reduces R below 1.0 out in the wild), but every bit still helps (i.e,, if R is 1.1 instead of 3.3 that still slows it significantly), we don't know how long antibodies remain (but maybe frequent boosters help with that until it fizzles out), and we don't know how much vaccine resistance is going to slow us down (as with simple compliance with mask wearing, some of the human population seems focused on misguided self destruction).

Agree 100%. On top of everything you said, the average test result for a COVID test in America takes over a week to receive.

Just to add to what your are saying a little bit. Part of fighting this pandemic is paying people to avoid spreading the virus. In Canada every person there. Citizen, migrant, heck even "illegal immigrant" is getting $500 a week. And this is an addition to usual unemployment benefits, universal healthcare, and 3 types of social benefits for the elderly. It takes minutes to sign up. And you get the money.

So people aren't risking their own health, the health of those around them, and the health of people they run into at work just to pay a rent/morgage, groceries, utilities, etc.

Similar things are going on in Europe as well. Adequately supplementing income during a once in a lifetime pandemic emergency is common sense for most countries... besides ours of course.

We needed an FDR but we got a Curry Joe / Vito Corleone / Charles Ponzi hybrid.

Florida is a mess. This is what happens when you ignore the virus. The country has to start to listen to the CDC. It causes me to wonder if the NBA has it right. They're contact tracing to see if any players from the Marlins interacted with Philadelphia 76ers players.

Marlins’ home opener postponed as they deal with virus
