If the restart of the NBA season is successful, it will give us more confidence about being out and about again without getting the virus.

We can't just stay inside and stop living life until we reach herd immunity one way or another. We need to start going outside again while being hypervigilant and taking the right precautions.

NBA players have become really diligent about things like diet, training and sleep these days. Since most are probably "metabolically healthy," they may only get a cold or mild flu-like symptoms if they get this virus.

The thinking is that the severity of the virus in different people may have to do with how metabolically healthy they are and even their blood type.

People are going outside. Some are being vigilant. Some aren't. That's why we have having big spikes in the virus.

Whatever happens with the NBA won't affect any of our personal risk, and it won't affect my personal actions.

I'll do stuff outdoors, like hiking and backpacking. I'll do the stuff I have to do, like buy groceries. But I won't be going in restaurants, gyms, movie theatres or be in crowds until they get a vaccine.

Right now, there are lots of theories, but no answers. And all the stuff about blood type, etc., may at best predict the amount of risk different people have. But if I found out my blood type made me 10% less likely to get the virus, that wouldn't change my actions.

The big spikes are happening in certain states where, because of politics, more people are probably not wearing masks because they think that wearing a mask and social distancing is a political statement instead of taking common sense precautions.

We haven't seen big spikes in L.A. or NYC, despite the massive protests in both cities the last few weeks. It's probably because most protesters were wearing masks.

For that reason, and also because of the strict protocols the NBA will have, I'm not that concerned about players getting the coronavirus, let along having more than a cold or mild flu if they get it.

So if people were wearing masks (quite a lot didn't) but didn't social distance, and we haven't seen big spikes, does that mean that we just need to wear masks and not worry about social distancing?

yes social distancing was initially recommended when masks were used widespread. Now the governor says use the mask as much as you can but especially when you can't social distance.

A bubble could reduce the chance of infection, especially if the hotel workers and other staff are tested each time they come to work. It certainly doesn't eliminate the chance of infection -- nothing will do that.

The Disney workers aren’t going to be tested each time that they come to work. And some will be exposed directly to players. If the league needs the revenue and the players are willing to gamble, so be it. Just don’t claim that you are about safety. I might watch from the safety of my home where I can commit to safety.

This was coming. Florida is Florida.

This is first legit sign imo that season may not resume. Too many moving parts if Orlando is canceled.

I’ve thought about this. FL restaurants were open for a whole week before they had to shut them back down again LV isn’t doing great either, but they seem to be in better shape than FL. Hmmm... 🤔

EDIT: I should add that a lot of the decision behind Orlando was because production facilities were already in place. So logistically moving might not be that easy to find a place that has ample accommodations, plus arena space, plus broadcast facility etc. etc.

Orlando being selected was because Disney owns ESPN and the NBA sees those $ signs.

Well right. And because it’s all The Kingdom they have everything already which makes it cheaper to go there and just hit it whereas other places would take more effort and hence $$$

I don’t think there gonna cancel the season if playing in Orlando becomes a concern they can just move the season and playoffs to another location.

Is it confirmed Las Vegas is the backup site.

You can't run away from COVID-19. Las Vegas has had a surge of cases over the last couple of days too.

No matter what the NBA does, there is going to be a chance of players getting sick, and the virus spreading through a team or the entire league.

A bubble only reduces the risk. It doesn't eliminate it.

This is a highly contagious, and potentially fatal virus, with no known cure. People are going to continue to get sick and die from it; NBA players are not immune from being some of those people.

Yes this is 100% true, we can only reduce risk not eliminate it (unless we go to Antartica

And yes cases are increasing..

But to put a positive spin on it, US daily death rates are reaching new lows and declining drastically shown by the graph in the link below peaking around 2700 on April 21 and reaching a new relative low yesterday at 267..that a very very drastic decrease and it about equal to the number of daily deaths when the lockdown began in mid March!

But I suppose it remains a very difficult question..if cases are surging, but deaths declining, do we feel more safe..and perhaps does the NBA feel more safe? And what if the trend in deaths continue and the US can get daily deaths below 100 around late July despite increasing cases?

Personally, this doesn't make me feel anymore safe. I can still get the virus, and I can still die. And if I get the virus and live, it can cause long-term lung issues.

I don't see any reason to sugarcoat the pandemic and pretend the worse is over, just because most of us are sick of it and wish it were over.

Not just that activeverb..a person may get the virus, be put on a ventilator, and live thankfully. But that can lasts a while and you can loss a ton of weight and feel like crap for a while. Some people even have symptoms that linger for months. On top of that if you were hospitalized, you have to keep getting tests till you are negative and for some that can take weeks even after they no longer have symptoms..than they can stop self quarantine.

I get the feeling people fear the virus..not just because it can kill you (which for younger people and athletes can be very low), but it can make your life miserable when you have it..and as you said who knows the long-term effects..that isn't known yet.

Guys it would be great to keep this thread about news specific to NBA’s reopening and not veer off into a broad discussion on COVID19 (although I agree most talking is on asymptomatic or dying but not about recovery and long term/permanent effects from getting sick). There already is a thread on ‘Rona in general and it became massive with back and forth about the comings and goings of Coronavirus. The hope for this thread is more info pertaining to and counting down to the restart of the Season. Thanks

It's a scary thing. It's also scary that people are forgetting it's scary because of the protests and just being tired of stay-at-home orders.

WOJ Info

As expected, NBA and NBPA have finalized terms of the revised CBA for the Orlando restart, sources tell ESPN. All items in Saturday’s league memo to teams are agreed upon. Transaction window starts at noon.

One change for use to replacement players in Orlando, per league memo to teams: Replacing a player with Covid-19 must occur no later than 7 days following confirmed positive player resumes training.

NBA and NBPA have agreed to put into place an enhanced insurance plan for players in Orlando that would cover career-ending injuries related to Covid-19 or conventional basketball injuries, sources tell ESPN. Potential group policy would cover players for several million dollars.

As coronavirus testing for players heading to Orlando starts today, teams are bracing for significant numbers of positive tests. One Western Conference playoff team had four positives in past few weeks, per sources. Full training camps start on July 11 at Disney.

More Woj

To continue what my bro LakerSD started

Per Woj

It's a bigger concern for non-guaranteed playoff teams to lose players to extended quarantine before Orlando. Playoff teams worried less about needing key players for seeding games in August have more time to get players back to shape. All are worried about soft-tissue injuries.

https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1275478658602405894?s=21

All of this, of course, is hoping that those players testing positive experience little, if no, symptoms. While statistics are on the side of healthy, young NBA players not becoming seriously ill because of the coronavirus, there are no guarantees.

https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1275479296249933825?s=21

Remember too: Even among the six teams trying to reach the playoffs via a play-in, none believe this restart is worth risking injuries on players that could carry into next season. For some, Orlando will be an extended summer league to develop young players and protect veterans.

If I were him, I would wait to see what players opted to return and who tested for covid-19 before I made a decision.

If you're a team that isn't currently an 8th seed, your chances of being anything more than first-round fodder are pretty low.

League Experiencing Buyer’s Remorse

Per The Athletic (so full article is probably behind a pay wall)

"It’s the hindsight of ‘Was it worth it?’ that worries me."

In this anonymous poll, GMs from 10 of the 22 NBA teams scheduled to return next month expressed concern about health, family/friends, quality of play and more | @sam_amick

https://twitter.com/theathleticla/status/1275861246697324544?s=21

Of course NBA general managers are worried about the league’s unprecedented return-to-play plan in Orlando — especially now that coronavirus cases in the Walt Disney World area are on the rise.
Some are terrified, not only for the people who could spend up to three months in COVID-19 ravaged Florida starting in mid-July but also for the incredible damage the league could incur for years to come if too many players test positive and it all comes crashing down.

“If the cases keep spiking in Florida, things are going to happen,” one GM told The Athletic on Monday. “I’m really, really concerned for the league big-picture wise in many, many ways.”

Others are mildly concerned, trusting of Commissioner Adam Silver and his staff that shared their 113-page “Health and Safety Protocols” memo with teams last week but also wary of the physical risks and mental health challenges that this unnatural environment will present for players and staff members alike. And that was before the positive tests of players such as Denver’s Nikola Jokic started rolling in on Tuesday.
“It’s the hindsight of ‘Was it worth it?’ that worries me,” another GM said. “If something happens, it’s (the question of) ‘Was it worth it?’ If everything goes great, it’s historic, and it’ll be remembered throughout history. ‘Remember the Bubble?’ or whatever they’re going to call it. It’ll be a special thing as long as we can make it through.”

There are a select few GMs who are more optimistic than the rest too, including one who cited the decrease of the death rate among coronavirus patients as a positive sign that treatment is believed to be improving.

“The issue is relative risk (to a team’s home market) — not the risk of the Orlando campus,” the GM explained. “I believe (we’re) safer in (the) Orlando campus, given all the precautions.”

Said another, who gushed about the job Silver & Co. have done: “I think the precautions the NBA is taking to enhance the safety of the bubble participants are nothing short of extraordinary. … Once (everyone is) on campus, I think (people within the league) will appreciate the NBA’s work on this.”
In an attempt to understand what concerns them most and why, I either spoke or texted with 10 of the 22 general managers whose teams are scheduled to take part when the season restarts on July 30. In general terms, seven of the 10 were cautiously optimistic while the other three were far more skeptical about how this might go and still pushing for significant change.
GMs are the caretakers in the basketball bunch, the highest-ranking hoops officials who will be inside the bubble and who feel so personally responsible for the safety of their respective staffs.

With the league trying to pull off this unenviable feat for the sake of great financial gain — the national television price tag alone is approximately $900 million and the regional sports network revenue brings that total even higher since they’ll play eight regular-season games — the GMs are the ones who not only have to manage these unpredictable rosters but to look out for everyone in their basketball operations department along the way. Owners are not expected to be inside the campus.

“Uncomfortable — how can anyone not be,” a fourth GM said when asked how he felt about the surreal experience to come. “A lot of uncertainty. I know all the proper measures are being taken but (there) is still a lot (of) unknown. You know and I know why we are playing — for the money. If not that, do you really think we would be playing? I get it, and I’m in…but with hesitation.”
The following is a list of their greatest concerns, with all perspectives shared anonymously.

Today is the deadline for players to notify the league of the intentions to sit out. We've heard that Ariza, Bertans and Bradley are electing not to play. Are there any others known yet?

Update - Woj

Quote:
Wednesday is turning out to be a soft target date for players to opt-out of Orlando – unless they want to enter process to be placed on excused/protected list to keep salary. Teams are largely treating July 1 as deadline, which is when rosters of eligible players are due to NBA.

So it sounds like maybe announcing today lets a player potentially keep their salary, while July 1 is the "actual" deadline.
