No words to do his talent justice, so I'll leave this clip of the late great Ian Holm in The Sweet Hereafter here:

RIP. Such a great actor.

My favorite role of his was probably as Father Cornelius in The Fifth Element.

Bilbo, not Gandalf. The great Ian McKellen is thankfully still with us. RIP Mr. Holm. Always enjoyed his work.

Such a great comedic sidekick performance. He's the comically straight-laced nerd archetype, but still has enough gravitas not to fall into total caricature as lesser actors would've. Holm really ties that movie together.

Oh man.

So many quality roles. He was perfect in Alien.

RIP

Especially enjoyed his roles in LOTRs, Hobbits, Fifth Element and The Day After Tomorrow!

Very accomplished actor, made his first film at 26 years old...

Oh no. Now I understand why he didn't take part in the recent online reunion of the LOTR cast. So sad. That scene in Alien when he explains his perspective on the creature is one of the most chilling moments I've ever seen in a movie. The robotic coldness was perfect, and in that moment I really felt the isolation of the crew from the rest of humanity. RIP, Mr. Holm.

It's always funny to see what performers are remembered for. Holm was a renowned Shakesperean thespian (which I did not know until today), but he'll always be most remembered for showing up in five scenes of an 11-hour fantasy epic.

And a few funny scenes in a Sci-Fi action comedy

RIP.
Very talented guy. Bilbo in LOTR, the priest guy in 5th Element, the android in Alian, the coach Mussabini in Chariots of Fire, the doctor who treated the king in the Madness of King George, the Welsh captain in Branaugh's Henry V. What a range.
