CL, what's up with Mass? According to worldometer, so far today, the state has 3840 new cases and 189 deaths, the second and fifth highest totals respectively since the beginning of this. Cali is going crazy as well. A second wave already?

The governor did a phase 1 reopening last Monday. My city and many cities hung back and are being more cautious. We had some bad outbreaks in retirement homes and veterans homes. I'm hunkered down only going out at 6 am to shop and quick evening deliveries to clients with no contact. I don't even go to the bank, everything is Venmo and mobile banking and all my other stuff in on Zoom. I cut my own hair a couple of weeks ago so I wouldn't have to go to a salon which did reopen last week. Everyone I see is wearing masks and social distancing. I think there was a cluster outbreak at a shopping center in one of the more rural areas. I'll take a look at our state breakdown to see where the flare-ups are.

That number is going to skyrocket in about a week and a half. Reopening restaurants and bars would have been bad enough but there are a lot of people in those protests who are either maskless or wearing them under their noses.

And they are doing so under prolonged exposure.

California's projections for deaths has been rising steadily with nearly every updated projection. It was once ~6K and now it is ~13 according IHME.

What does this really mean? Well, besides the fact that Californians continued to do a (bleep) job at social distancing, when one considers that we've only (in the sense of this point) had 4,360 deaths thus far, we are 4,360/12,950ths, or just barely passed the 1/3 point, to seeing this thing end.

Texted a co-worker today as I didn't see her online for a few days.
She let me know her Mom (52) was just diagnosed positive. She woke up over the weekend coughing and vomiting. My friend just took the test this morning and will know in a day or so.

They live under the same roof so she and I are both assuming she has it as well. Her Mom went to re-new her passport 2 weeks ago... and thinks that's where she was exposed.

This is far from over. *sigh

So far, this is the closest I've come into contact with this thing.
Scary thing is, we were going to take a hike together on Sunday but I had to cancel.

Not necessarily. 2 close friends had it and their wives didn't.

Interesting stuff about two potential treatments for COVID19 that are being tested:

https://www.hoosiertimes.com/spencer_evening_world/free_access/lilly-starts-trials-of-potential-coronavirus-treatment/article_6afc6b9e-a5ca-11ea-a3cd-83af3d7bef28.html

Quote:
Eli Lilly and Co. has embarked on trials of the first potential new antibody drug to treat COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus.

Delivered in a one-time dose through an IV, the drug known as LY-CoV555 contains an antibody developed from the blood sample of one of the first people in the United States to test positive for and recover from COVID-19.

Quote:
A monoclonal antibody, LY-CoV55 appears to attack the coronavirus’ signature spike protein, preventing it from attaching to and entering human cells. Typically years of research lie behind a new monoclonal antibody treatment, but Lilly scientists have developed this one in three months.

Lilly researchers are also exploring whether combinations of other antibodies might also treat COVID-19.

These California counties reopened 'high-risk' businesses a month ago. Here's what happened

Quote:
After Yuba and Sutter counties moved to reopen dine-in restaurants, hair salons, gyms and other "high-risk" businesses with modifications on May 4, California Governor Gavin Newsom strongly condemned the bi-county health jurisdiction for defying the statewide shelter-in-place order.

“They’re making a big mistake," he said during a press conference. "They’re putting their public at risk. They’re putting our progress at risk."

It's been a full month since the revised order took effect, and the counties would certainly push back on the idea that reopening was a "big mistake."

The health officer for the two counties, Dr. Ngoc-Phuong Luu, crafted a health order that allowed restaurants, personal care services, gyms, libraries, shopping malls and several other businesses that fall into "Stage 3" of the state's reopening plan to reopen on May 4 — so long as businesses implement safety measures such as mask mandates and six feet of physical distancing between customers. Bars, nightclubs, places of worship and other sites for large gatherings remained closed.

The two rural Northern California counties have a combined population of close to 175,000 and recorded 50 coronavirus cases and three deaths on May 1. As of June 4, the case total has increased to 79, but the death toll remains three. There are currently two individuals hospitalized due to COVID-19 in the two counties at this time.[Emphasis mine]

How many tests were conducted? And how many deaths occurred in that time period compared to last year? And what were the symptoms of those people?

I wonder what the ages of the populations are. Maybe large portions of the populations isolated and avoided public spaces even though it wasn't mandated?

I really don't think the World Health Organization is making up the risks associated with this pandemic. There are countries worth of evidence saying WHO was accurate in regards to the risks.

Maybe these counties are the exception to the rule. But I wonder if they did something different as opposed to other areas. Maybe they were fortunate. Maybe the numbers are inaccurate. Interesting stuff.

All good questions

As opposed to extended "hard" shelter in place orders, I've always believed that proper social distancing adherence, isolating the elderly and assisting them in their needs, and having strict limits on crowd size, is the key to limiting the spread of the virus--which it sounds like these counties supported, though obviously, they represent a limited sample sample size.

We all must buy groceries, and though I can't speak for the entire country, here in Sacramento the markets have been exceptional at requiring social distancing, isolating check-out clerks and sterilizing carts and other frequently touched surfaces. I believe such policies, where feasible, are the better idea as opposed to the more strict restrictions--in most areas. In LA, and other hot spots, probably not.

Our problem is not as much government allowing people to ease back towards more normal social interactions, but with the people themselves, when so allowed, not complying with social distancing policies.

As most here know, we didn't flatten the curve; we just lowered it a bit. We crossed the 100K death mark on May 27, and now on June 6 we're just over 112K. So still about 1,200 deaths a day, on average. With states re-opening, and with the protests, I don't see the totals slowing down anytime soon. It's just going to be a steady stream.

Not only do I think we hit 200K by the end of the year, I think we hit that before the election.

Welp, my neighbors have given up on social distancing. They decided to have a block party with a rock band, two food trucks, 50-100 people, no masks, no social distancing. We stayed away and wish them well. I guess we are that family.

Maybe they all got the antibodies test.

I had my first In N Out burger (drive thru) in 3 months this week, which is my equivalent of living dangerously.

I'm going to keep to my routine of the last 3 months and let other people be guinea pigs to the next phases of re-opening. Everyone has not been tested, there is no vaccine, people are starting to slack on social distancing, the curve has not flattened. I'm not willing to risk my life based on other people's lack of concern. People can still be asymptomatic carriers and out there unknowingly infecting others. That really hasn't changed.

I had a huge argument at Whole Foods today. One of the produce people invaded my space three times in a row reaching over to scan something. At first I thought it was a shopper. Each time I stepped back to create a 6-foot distance. After the third time I said, "We still have to keep 6 feet between us. You know that right?" He looked at me like I was from Mars. I didn't even realize he was an employee at this point and just thought he was an inconsiderate shopper. So I pointed to the yellow stripes painted on the floor 6 feet apart. "We have to stay 6 feet apart." His reply, "I think you are being very rude."

I called over a manager who was equally as dismissive and didn't apologize. I explained what happened and she says, "Oh, so you wanted a verbal warning?" We went back and forth and they were acting like I was the problem and just getting upset for nothing. I asked if there was another manager in the store, she said yes, I said thank you.

After I finished shopping, I moved my stuff away from all the shoppers and cashiers and asked the Customer Service booth to call the other manager for me. So while I'm waiting, the first manager goes over to the booth and calls to me from across the registers in front of her the other customers, "I don't understand why you're so upset?!?"

I said, "I know you don't understand and that's exactly why I need to talk to someone else."

The second manager apologized profusely. But I'm not sure the two other fools will be made to understand their pathetic attempt at customer service was a massive failure in addition to putting their shoppers at risk by not practicing social distancing. I acknowledged that most everyone else at that store is helpful and thoughtful and will step back or wait for you to maintain the 6 feet.

If the people in charge are being that careless, then I really don't trust the general public. I cook for people for a living. I can't take the risk for them or me.

Vegas - is what happens in Vegas going to stay in Vegas?

Nope. Looking for masks in this video - the dealers and employees. Looking for distancing - none to be found.
