I wonder what the real story is

Nets, coach Kenny Atkinson 'mutually agree to part ways'

The Brooklyn Nets are mutually parting ways with coach Kenny Atkinson, the team announced Saturday morning.

"After discussions with Kenny about the progress of the season, we mutually agreed that a coaching change would be in the best interest of the team," general manager Sean Marks said in a statement Saturday. "This was an extremely difficult decision, however the organization believes it is one that is necessary at this time. Kenny was instrumental in developing our players and building the identity and culture we have become known for over these past four seasons. The foundation he helped put into place here is one that we will continue to build on in the coming seasons."

Assistant coach Jacque Vaughn will sever as the team's head coach for the rest of the season.

At 28-34 the Nets are seventh in the Eastern Conference standings, despite free agent acquisitions Kevin Durant missing the entire season as he recovers from a torn Achilles and Kyrie Irving being ruled of the season last month.

Atkinson took over the rebuilding Nets for the start of the 2016 season and compiled a 118-190 record in three-plus seasons. After consecutive seasons of over 50 losses to being his tenure, Atkinson led Brooklyn to its first playoff appearance in four years last season.

Wait what
That’s a hell of a coach man.

I think if the Knicks have any brain they hire him immediately.
He’s one of the best rebuild coaches out there.
I always found games against the Nets, that he made good adjustments and his teams played above their talent level.

In the NBA though you are only as good as your stars think you are.
KD and Kyrie maybe weren’t sold on him so he outta there.

A few years from now I think Brooklyn will look back on what they gave up and regret it quite a bit.

He’s the ideal hire for them. I just don’t wish the Knicks on anybody.

And if they don't, the Lakers should snatch him up in some sort of front-office/player development role, even if it's short-term.

It would be a great decision for the Pelicans.

Seems likely. He wasn't feeling the coach for whatever his reasons, and KD and him are buds so Atkinson got the stick via the duo disapproval.

Yep. They aren't the only lotto team he could help. But I think they are his best option.

This sounds like yet another case of a coach who elevates a young team from the cellar, gets a superstar or two, and then gets pushed out for a big name.

KD be like... "There is no championship culture around here. Where are the other 3 all-stars that me and Kyrie are joining?"

There is an article in The Athletic about this. The bottom line is that Atkinson lost the locker room.

Quote:
The straw that broke the camel’s back came Friday at the practice facility, when GM Sean Marks and Atkinson discussed his waning voice with the team. One source said the final decision to part ways was not made until late Friday night and into Saturday.

Even in his final days as head coach, Atkinson told people that if he were going to be fired, he was going to depart on his terms. An offseason dismissal was almost inevitable, and so Atkinson made it known: If you’re going to fire me, just let me out now.

Kyrie is toxic to a locker room and KD is a premadonna. I can’t wait to watch the roller coaster this team will be next year until the eventual crash and burn. The best part of this whole thing is KD claiming it’s not a championship culture while being an issue to the culture of the only championship team his been on.
