ESPN announces two-part 30 for 30 on Michael Vick, placing Vick’s life within “narratives about race and sports, poverty and power”
"As a historical documentary filmmaker, I was interested in placing Michael Vick’s life within larger historical narratives – narratives about race and sports, poverty and power, and about the criminal justice system. In the film, we get to see how Vick’s childhood affects the choices he makes, as well as how these larger social forces shape his trajectory."
Michael Vick with the Eagles.

Last January, ESPN ran an ad during the College Football Playoff National Championship spotlighting several upcoming 30 for 30 subjects. Several of those films have since aired, covering Janet Guthrie, Dennis Rodman, Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz, and some still haven’t been formally announced (those covering Lance Armstrong and Florence Griffith-Joyner), but one that’s sure to get a lot of attention had its premiere dates announced Thursday. That’s going to be Vick, a two-part documentary on former college and NFL quarterback Michael Vick and his ups and downs, from college stardom to NFL success to jail time for his role in running a dogfighting ring to his eventual return to the NFL.

Vick will have part one air on ESPN on Thursday, January 30, at 9 p.m. ET, with part two following a week later on Thursday, February 6, at 9 p.m. ET. It’s directed by Stanley Nelson (Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool, Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities), and it sounds like it’s going to explore not just Vick’s individual story, but the larger context around it. Here’s more from ESPN’s release:

Beginning with his emergence as a high school star in Newport News, Virginia, “Vick” traces the quarterback’s rise as a college football phenomenon and then number-one overall draft pick of the Atlanta Falcons – the first time an African-American quarterback was selected with the top pick. In the NFL, Vick would stand out not just for his singular athleticism, but also for his standing as a cultural icon, a star who refused to turn his back on the friends who’d been with him since the beginning. Ultimately, it would be that refusal that would portend his downfall.

Vick quickly went from superstar athlete to national pariah; from one of the most popular players in the NFL – and all of sports – to a man as ostracized as virtually any public figure in America. Yet Vick’s style of play would revolutionize the position of quarterback, and his success on the field would open doors for other black quarterbacks to follow.

…“As a historical documentary filmmaker, I was interested in placing Michael Vick’s life within larger historical narratives – narratives about race and sports, poverty and power, and about the criminal justice system,” said director Nelson. “In the film, we get to see how Vick’s childhood affects the choices he makes, as well as how these larger social forces shape his trajectory. I hope that viewers of the film can gain a fuller understanding of the social context that gave rise to Vick’s story, as well as its reverberating impact.”

This isn’t the first multi-part 30 for 30, but it’s interesting to see one with a second installment a full week later. Celtics-Lakers: Best of Enemies was three parts and five hours total, but aired on consecutive nights, and OJ: Made In America was five parts and eight hours, but those parts aired within the course of a week. However, there’s maybe some logic to putting both installments on the same day of the week at the same time (similar to how lots of broadcast TV shows work), and this documentary featuring some darker subject matter than many 30 for 30 installments may add to the desire to spread it out a bit.

And on the subject matter front, it’s certainly interesting to read Nelson’s comments about the larger historical narratives here and how he hopes to incorporate those. OJ: Made In America found great success with that approach, even winning ESPN’s first Oscar. And there’s definitely some merit to discussing that around Vick; it’s notable that the previous documentary on him, Bleacher Report’s 2016 film (also titled Vick), did a lot of things well and included hip-hop artists talking about Vick, but didn’t include much in the way of quotes from him on his relationships with that community or with his friends in Virginia. Perhaps this will have more on that front.

It’s worth keeping an eye on how this is received on a couple of levels, though. First, there’s the “no politics” insistence at ESPN; of course, it hasn’t really been the documentaries that have been criticized for politics so far, and OJ: Made In America in particular (and a few others) did definitely dive into politics at some points. But Vick is quite a controversial figure in his own right, and there’s still often a lot of backlash to anything involving him.

ESPN to release 30 for 30 on Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire's 1998 home run race

"The Last Dance" docuseries will come to a close on May 17, but fear not, sports fans. Another 1998 Chicago documentary is on its way.

Tuesday, ESPN announced it will premiere a 30 for 30 documentary chronicling the 1998 NL home run race between Cubs' and Cardinals' sluggers Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire. The documentary will debut on June 14 at 8 p.m. CT.

Sosa and McGwire are credited with reinvigorating interest in baseball after fans grew disillusioned following the 1994-95 strike. Summer 1998 saw the sluggers battle to break Roger Maris' single-season record for home runs (61, 1961), with McGwrie ultimately coming out on top (70-66).

The documentary includes interviews with both players and is "a journey back through time that recalls how seismic and emotional the story was – even as the legitimacy of the accomplishments at its center would later be called into question."

ESPN announces new 30 for 30, “Al Davis vs. The NFL,” premiering on Feburary 4
"Al Davis vs. The NFL" is set to premiere on ESPN on February 4 at 9:00 p.m.

Viewers of the NFL Playoff game between the Baltimore Ravens and Tennessee Titans on ESPN were treated to a nice surprise on Sunday, the arrival of a previously unannounced 30 for 30 documentary. The newest addition to the award-winning doc series will feature longtime Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders owner Al Davis, whose maverick machinations often found him at odds with the National Football League.

“Al Davis vs. The NFL” is set to premiere on ESPN on February 4 at 9:00 p.m. The doc is directed by Ken Rodgers, VP & Senior Coordinating Producer at NFL Films. Rodgers has been behind the bulk of NFL-related 30 for 30 docs, including Deion’s Double Play, The Two Bills, The Four Falls of Buffalo, and Elway to Marino. Rodgers has essentially been directing one 30 for 30 a year and was due for a new one.

Davis’s run-ins with the league in which his Raiders played are legendary. The principal owner and general manager of the Raiders from 1972 until his death in 2011, Davis was involved in multiple lawsuits regarding the franchise. He famously filed an anti-trust lawsuit against the NFL when they tried to block his initial move from Oakland to LA and later sued the NFL when he decided to move them back, claiming that the league sabotaged his effort to build a stadium in LA. He also sued the NFL over the TV rights to the LA market even after the Raiders had moved away.

The lawsuits and legal issues are also coupled with Davis’s successes on the field. The Raiders won three Super Bowls under Davis’s ownership, as well as an AFL championship in 1967. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992.

ESPN will debut the next installment in the Peabody and Emmy award-winning 30 for 30 series, “Once Upon a Time in Queens,” on September 14 & 15. Directed by Nick Davis (“Ted Williams: ‘The Greatest Hitter Who Ever Lived’”), the documentary tells the story of the 1986 Mets, one of the most dominating, infamous, and magical teams of all-time and their incredible season in one of the greatest cities in the world. Trailer: https://bit.ly/3musjIP

Featuring exclusive interviews with players from the World Series winning team, including Keith Hernandez, Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Mookie Wilson, Lenny Dykstra, Kevin Mitchell, and many more, the film traces the origins of the 1986 team back to the late 1970s, when the Mets were a listless, struggling franchise – and New York City was nearly bankrupt. But as the grime and hopelessness that defined the city gave way to the high-flying, “greed is good” rise of the 1980s, the Mets emerged, too. And the transformations – of the city, and the ballclub – ran in parallel paths in every which way imaginable. The city may have had a glamorous sheen, but dirt and danger were still everywhere. The Mets may have been full of swagger and star power, but demons and disaster always loomed.

“They were wildly talented, and equally entertaining,” said Director Nick Davis. “They were like a bunch of raffish rogues who come together for one great score, like the characters in a heist movie. Love them or hate them, you could not avoid the 1986 Mets, and for one year, they blazed like a comet across the New York City landscape, the trail still visible all these years later.”

Added Executive Producer Jimmy Kimmel: “The characters and events captured in this documentary are so outlandish it is hard to believe this documentary isn’t a work of 80’s-era fiction. Whether you are a New Yorker, a Mets fan or even a fan of baseball makes no difference. This is the definitive, must-see story of a team and a time whose antics and even existence now seem unimaginable.”

“Once Upon a Time in Queens” will premiere over two nights on September 14 & 15 at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN. It is executive produced by Jimmy Kimmel, Sal “Cousin Sal” Iacono, Kimmelot’s Scott Lonker, ITV America’s David George and MLB’s Nick Trotta. Each part of the film will be available to stream on ESPN+ and the ESPN App immediately after its premiere. The entire 30 for 30 library is also available on demand exclusively on ESPN+. Advance press screeners, additional information, including film clips and director statements and bios, are available upon request. Follow 30 for 30 on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

ESPN Films Latest 30 for 30 Documentary “The Tuck Rule” to Premiere February 6

Film Features Tom Brady & Charles Woodson Revisiting Controversial Play That Changed the NFL; Trailer for the film now available; Film will be available on ESPN+ immediately after its debut

ESPN will debut the next installment in the Peabody and Emmy award-winning 30 for 30 series, “The Tuck Rule,” on February 6. Directed by Ken Rodgers (“The Two Bills,” “Al Davis vs. The NFL”) and Nick Mascolo, the documentary examines one of the most controversial plays in sports history, twenty years after it took place. Trailer:

Without the Tuck Rule, Tom Brady wouldn’t have won his first playoff game – and who knows where his destiny might have gone from there. But whether what happened on January 19, 2002 was the right call or a terrible call, divine providence or deep conspiracy, one thing is certain: The life of Tom Brady, as well as the life of the Hall of Famer who hit him on the play, Brady’s college teammate Charles Woodson, was forever changed that night.

In the documentary, Brady and Woodson sit down together and look back, for the first time ever, on their fateful collision that snowy night in Foxboro. “The Tuck Rule” will premiere February 6 at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. The film will be made available on ESPN+ immediately after its premiere, along with the rest of the 30 for 30 library.

Said co-director Ken Rodgers: “The Tuck Rule is certainly one of the most controversial calls in the history of sports, but it may also be one of its most consequential. It proves that one moment, this moment, any moment, can change our lives – just as it did for Brady and Woodson twenty years ago today. It was awe-inspiring to hear these two friends talk with each other about that moment for the first time in their lives. Their emotions about that night are still fresh.”

Along with an exclusive sit-down between Brady and Woodson, the film features interviews with referee Walt Coleman, Robert Kraft, Bill Belichick, Tedy Bruschi, Troy Brown, Willie McGinest, Mark Davis, Tim Brown, Eric Allen and Lincoln Kennedy. The film is co-produced by ESPN, NFL Films, 199 Productions, and Build Your Legend Productions.

New ESPN Films 30 for 30 Documentary “Shark” on Golfing Legend Greg Norman to Premiere April 19

ESPN will debut the next installment in the Peabody and Emmy award-winning 30 for 30 series, “Shark,” on April 5. Directed by Jason Hehir (“The Last Dance”) and Thomas Odelfelt, the documentary examines the legendary career of professional golfer Greg Norman, and how it was shaped by one stunning day at the Masters Tournament in 1996. “Shark” will premiere April 19 at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. The film will be made available on ESPN+ immediately after its premiere, along with the rest of the 30 for 30 library.

Greg Norman played the game of golf only one way: aggressively. And he did it without regret. It led him to two titles at the Open Championship, and one of the most famous careers in the sport’s history. And yet his boldness and his uncompromising approach to every round he played also cost him in some historic moments, the most shocking of which unfolded at the 1996 Masters, when Norman gave up a six-shot lead in the competition’s final round. A quarter century after that infamous collapse, Norman headed back to Augusta, at long last ready to relive the worst day of his golfing career. It’s a moment in sports history that will never be forgotten, but what it says about the man they call the Shark, and the course he never conquered, isn’t quite as simple as you might think.

Said co-director Jason Hehir: “There are places in sports that have such a mystique that they can forever shape the way we remember an athlete. Augusta National is one of those places. Greg Norman is by any objective measure one of the greatest golfers to ever play the game. Two-time major winner, 331 weeks at world #1, leading money winner in PGA history pre-Tiger, one of the few indelible players of his era. But despite all his success, he’s perhaps remembered most for his failure at the Masters, particularly his excruciating collapse on final Sunday in 1996. I was excited for the opportunity to tell the story of one man’s career through the prism of such a sacred site, and to examine the power of one place to mold a man’s legacy, for better or worse.”

Hehir, whose most recent project with ESPN was “The Last Dance,” will direct. The documentary is produced by ESPN Films in association with Words + Pictures. Advance press screeners, additional information, including film clips and director statements and bios, are available upon request. Follow 30 for 30 on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

ESPN Announces Production on 30 for 30 About Ravens’ 2000–01 Season

ESPN Films announced Tuesday that the company began production on a 30 for 30 documentary focusing on the 2000–01 Ravens.

ESPN’s press release explained why this iconic team was chosen for the documentary, which is supposed to mimic the reality television HBO show “Hard Knocks.”

“No team in NFL history has boasted, bullied or brandished as much bravado as the 2000-2001 Baltimore Ravens,” the press release said. “The rest of the NFL hated the Ravens but no one could say a thing, because they couldn’t beat them on the field, especially facing, arguably, the greatest defense ever.”

Details on the documentary’s release date have not been released.

The documentary, which has also yet to be titled, will be co-directed by Ken Rodgers and Jason Weber, produced by Erik Powers and executive produced by ESPN Films in association with NFL Films.
