Playing With Our Food... The Lakers played lazy ball to start this game. They weren’t in attack mode. That meant no running game, no attacking the paint in the half court, no disruption defensively. It was sleepy, mid-January ball against a weak opponent. They basically played with their food.

The Cavs worked that into a 13-point lead early on.

That was short-lived. Once the Lakers got serious, they feasted.

By halftime they reeled the Cavs in, and a few minutes into the second half, the Lakers had a double digit lead.

The Cavs couldn’t stop the bleeding as L.A. poured it on, scoring 81 seconds half points on their way to the 128-99 crushing.

“We’re having fun, man,” Jared Dudley said after this latest round of destruction.

Hopefully, they are building some momentum into the series of upcoming games against quality teams.

LeBron -- -- Very lazy start to this game. Did he want to attack and get to the rim against Thompson or settle? He went with settling to start. He was going to coast, and, hopefully, others would step up while he did it. That didn’t happen so the Lakers fell back by double digits in the first quarter. Late in the second quarter, he finally started stepping on the gas and getting aggressive. He had 8 points, 2 assists and no boards at the half. Those numbers were pretty much reflective of the effort. He got more aggressive as the game went along. Anytime he wanted to score or we needed a bucket he could just blow past slower defenders for scores. In the fourth, he started to put on a show, scoring 14 points. Basically, flex the muscle, put in the effort and squeeze the life from the Cavs. No one could guard him. Once he was engaged, it was over. He moved into 8th in the NBA in assists tonight. The Stats: He scored 31 points on 12-16 shooting (1-3 from three, 6-7 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 8 assists, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +19.

Kuzma -- -- Very poor start to this game trying to iso versus working off the screens to get downhill. That resulted in an 0-6 scoreless start until we brought him back in to beat the buzzer with a turnaround at the end of the first. I want to see him working off screens with and without the ball to get downhill. He’d get a little of that later in the game. In those sequences, if he has a roller or lob partner that gets him to think pass a little, too. He had a nice lob to Dwight in the fourthHe had an excellent sequence at the end of the first half where he blocked a reverse layup on one end, then grabbed an offensive board, spun and reversed himself on the other end. He picked up three fouls in the third quarter, a couple trying to deal with Love in the post. That shortened his time on the court. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-13 shooting (0-3 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +10.

Green -- -- He matched up against Garland defensively to start, but his better work was on help D. He had some nice digs and helps on the bigs in the post to force turnovers. He had a great steal in the backcourt after a timeout. As they inbounded the ball, he slapped it back to the inbounder who was still out of bounds, Laker ball. Some nice cuts off the ball to get open under the hoop (AC and LeBron both found him as they drew attention of defenders). The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-8 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 4 steals and 1 foul in 23 minutes. He was a +14.

McGee -- -- Much more impact than the 4 points that shows in the box score. His usual disruptive play defensively, erasing mistakes by our perimeter players. We were also funneling the guards to him, as well. So he had to step up and deter that penetration and disrupt lob passes. He rejected a couple of flush attempts by the Cavs, sending them packing. Some good passing, as well, tonight. He took a pass from LeBron trailing the break and then gave it back to him under the hoop for a dunk. Nice guard-like action from him. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-2 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 3 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +18.

Bradley -- -- One of the things that came to mind before we hit the floor against the Cavs, was how our vets were going to hound their young guards. What didn’t come to mind would be Bradley going at them offensively. He started the game with 9 points on 4-7 shooting in the first quarter. Very aggressive as the ball seemed to find him. Part of that was some nice cuts off ball to get open. AB got the Sexton assignment. Defensively, we didn’t put the clamps down or anything, and Bradley would be mostly quiet after that opening quarter. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-11 shooting (2-5 from three) to go with 3 boards and 2 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +11.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Some excellent passing from KCP tonight. We are really getting that strong handoff play down and it seems like KCP and Dwight team up for a lob pass at least once a game now. Some aggressive attacks of the hoop by him, as well. Once we get our guards going downhill with speed the help D has to make a decision -- challenge or prevent the lob or putback. The more of this we can get, the better. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 2-7 shooting (1-3 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 5 assists,1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +10.

Caruso -- -- Give me more 10 and 6 games, please. In a sleepy first half, guess who led the team in +/-? AC had the +5. His passing game was on point in that half as he was attacking the paint and seeing the floor well. That might have been his best passing of the season. He set up Dwight for dunks and found cutters off his drives for scores. He was one of the keys to the Lakers digging their way out of a 13-point first half hole. The team needed energy and AC brings that every game. He sank and made both his three attempts in this one. He finished the night with the team-high +25. “Every time he’s in the game, he’s always a plus guy,” LeBron said of AC. Well-rounded game tonight. With Rondo out, we needed our guards to do a little more of this. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-5 shooting (2-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 6 assists, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +25.

Howard -- -- That three point shot is looking amazing. He had one in the fourth in garbage time that you could see coming. He knocked that down and held the pose. All the rest of his work was pretty much dunks as teammates set him up. Some nice chemistry between Dwight and AC for a couple of dunks. KCP also lobbed to him for another. LeBron also slipped him an interior pass for another dunk. Kuzma had a lob to him. Dwight meanwhile battled on the glass for second chances. Anytime we can get the attention of his defender whether on penetration for a drive and dish or just missing a layup, he kills teams. Just shows the importance of that guard penetration that we don’t have as a consistent weapon. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 9-11 shooting (1-1 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 15 boards (5 offensive), 2 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +11.

Daniels -- -- He came in for garbage time and drained a couple of threes. The second one was deep with a man in his jersey. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 2-3 shooting from three (2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist and no fouls in 3 minutes. He was a +6.

Cook -- -- Covering Garland defensively...that looked a little frightening. He couldn’t get on track early. So that combo of defensive issues and ineffective offense didn’t help anything. He had a better second half, sinking a three and scoring on a lefty layup in transition. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-7 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a +12.

Dudley -- -- He helped spark the team a little offensively in the first half. He attacked and hit AC for a pull-up. He sank a corner three off a swing pass. He attacked and hit a floater. We needed to be more aggressive and a few of our bench guys helped the Lakers to come to life in that first half. That jumpstarted us. LeBron mentioned he was key to that run they went on and also added, “He’s one of the best teammates I’ve ever had.” The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-5 shooting to go with 2 boards, 3 assists and 4 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a +9.

Vogel -- -- Key Moment: Down 13 early in the second quarter, Vogel called a timeout, clapped his hands hard a few times and encouraged the team to pick it up. They were playing soft, uninspired, entitled ball. They didn’t respect the Cavs and weren’t putting in the necessary effort to impose themselves or their pace on their opponent. Once they got engaged, got stops, pushed pace and got into attack-mode the tide turned.

Key Substitution: That first half bench group helped spark the team to life. Dudley, AC and KCP pushed things aggressively and cut the Cavs lead to 7, forcing a timeout. The pace and aggression changed around them. The Lakers would cut the Cavs lead to 1 by halftime and keep trucking in the second half.

Key Stat: The 81 in the second half. The most points in a second half since 1987.

Thanks DB! I love how this team is stepping up when a player like AD has to sit. Wow.

Excellent write-up again, great game, great to see this team 33-7 at this stage of the season!

As much as LBJ haters hate to hear it, but, LeBron is the man on
this Lakers team. I've had to make peace with it...
