PostPosted: Sun Dec 01, 2019 4:17 pm    Post subject: MAVS -at- LAKERS - 12/1 - Thoughts and :-(( Ratings

December is Upon Us... Last time we played the Mav’s, Dwight’s notorious screen at the end of the game helped free up Green for the corner three to send it into OT. LeBron also got a whistle in OT that went his way. You wondered if maybe there’d be a little makeup for the Mavs awaiting the Lakers in this game.

To start the second half the whistles came. Vogel picked up a tech. Later, KCP picked one up, as well. The refs were well into their heads by then and Dallas went on to build a 20-point lead.

Give credit to the Mavs for hurting the Lakers on the offensive glass and for their bench outplaying the Laker reserves. When the Lakers tried to make a run, the Mavs bench held the line. The Lakers would fall 114-100, never recovering from that third quarter.

The nice thing about the Lakers schedule to start the season was that they had potential to get off to a hot start while still trying to figure things out. Now that December is here, the hope is that they have built enough chemistry to compete at a higher level. Their second-half effort and execution was not there today. They’ll need all of it to bounce back in a tough environment in Denver.

LeBron -- -- “A couple calls went against us and that kind of changed the momentum of the game,” LeBron said (he was in on a key no call in the third that I’m sure stuck with him). He started the game with some steals and transition plays to get the Lakers break going. He was sucking wind a little after about 6 minutes of wind sprints in that stretch, but the defense was active early. (That’s where you’d like to just feed AD in the halfcourt to go to work in the post while you rest a couple of plays. They tried that but AD wasn’t able to capitalize early on.) LeBron was overpowering defenders whenever he got speed and room in the offensive zone. Just trouble for the Mavs. At the half he had 15 points, 5 boards, 6 assists and 4 steals. He had his hands on his knees after finishing a lob dunk at the end of the half, just moments after going to the floor for a loose ball. He called his teammates over. Anyone catch the full thing he said to his team in that huddle at half time? Sounded something like either “who he think he is all jogging and (bleep). Or “Thinks he all talking (bleep). No (bleep)ing layups.” Let me know what you think it was. Might have been directed and Green or Rondo, could be an opponent. In the second half, the Lakers couldn’t get out in transition and executed poorly against the zone. With our inability to get one-and-out stops, the break died down. The zone slowed them, as well. They will see more of that if they play it like they did tonight. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 11-20 shooting (0-5 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 8 assists, 4 steals, 6 turnover and 3 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -16.

Davis -- -- “We beat ourselves tonight with the rebounding,” AD said. He mentioned this killing them when they were trying to make their run late in the third and early fourth. A little off from the perimeter and post to start the game, but he warmed up. He’d start imposing himself more in the paint for And-1s at the rim. He’d finish the first half with 20 points on 8-14 shooting and a +10. In the third, we saw a lot of zone. We didn’t put him into the middle of the zone like we had been doing to thwart that in the past. The team seemed confused about how to deal with it and settled with trying to shoot over the top. AD had a few possessions himself where the offense just stalled, so he tried to create and shoot jumpers. He’s money from that left corner three and knocked one down tonight. From the right side of the floor, he’s awful. When he went into a turnaround from the right side, you knew that was an automatic miss. He’s hit very few shots from that part of the court. The Stats: He scored 27 points on 10-21 shooting (1-2 from three, 6-6 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 1 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -7.

Green -- -- He sank a couple of threes and hit a floater in the first quarter. Some nice sequences on help D. In the fourth, he was shooting blanks. We set him up for a number of threes and he couldn’t answer. He tried to iso after that and dribble himself out of bounds. Just an awful stretch. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-10 shooting (2-8 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and no fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -4.

McGee -- -- In a game where we struggled on the glass, McGee rebounded well. He had 10 boards (4 offensive) in just 16 minutes. Early on, he was the one making the opponent pay with a couple of tap outs of misses and resetting the offense. In the third, he had one sequence where he denied a couple of drives, including one rejection, but I think the Mavs still scored on that sequence. He also broke up a pass from Luka, dropping back in the paint on the screen-roll coverage. For the most part, they were aggressively sending bodies to Luka and trying to have the help D rotate (Doncic did have 7 turnovers). The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting to go with 10 boards (4 offensive), 1 steal, 1 block and 1 foul in 16 minutes. He was a -4.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He had the Luka assignment defensively. You need a bigger player to guard him, but it’s also all about the team D behind KCP as you have to deal with the screens and go over the top of those. He did a good job with the assignment and the team D behind him had moments. He was in the middle of the officiating in the third quarter. Eventually, he picked up a tech just before sitting. Offensively, he sank a three and missed one of those patented numbers where he pushes out the break and pulls up from three to miss. He’s better when someone feeds him in transition than off the dribble. Those feel like instant misses. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-7 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -11.

Kuzma -- -- The ankle probably impacts him most defensively, having to react and push off while off balance. But he was awful on both ends today. He was shooting blanks from three. Some frustrating looks, but some open ones, too. The percentage from three will take a big hit tonight. Defensively, he was a negative with both the ability and decision making. Kind of couldn’t wait until he sat in this one. Just 1 rebound in his 21 minutes and, again, no steals. “I turned it pretty bad,” Kuzma said of the ankle. “It’s going to heel eventually.” If he plays like this with it, we’re better off not playing him. He needs to be changing ends with speed, cutting, getting into the lane for runners. Really didn’t see any of his energy and our bench got worked. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-8 shooting (0-5 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -15.

Howard -- -- He picked up a bogus foul in the first half and then later wanted a goaltend reviewed that he thought was a legit shotblock. He sat on the bench and looked a bit frustrated after that sequence. That seemed to be the Lakers in a microcosm. He’d score on a couple of dunks, one a lob from Rondo on the two-man, the other on a feed from LeBron as he trailed the break. Short minutes tonight. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-3 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists and 1 foul in 12 minutes. He was a -8.

Caruso -- -- The only guy on the Laker bench that made a positive impact. With the Lakers reeling in the third quarter behind the officiating, AC subbed in for KCP. He sank a couple of big threes to help trim a 20-point lead down and force a timeout. They would cut the lead in half. But the Lakers sat LeBron after that and we couldn’t keep the momentum. He was a +7 in his 24 minutes to lead the team. His offensive production may be the only positive to pull from this one. He had some flurries of scoring at the end of last year. Hopefully, we see more of this. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-5 shooting (2-2 from three) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 24 minutes. He was a +7.

Rondo -- -- Man, he got backdoored on a defensive play in the third for a layup that sucked some wind out of the sails. Caruso had shut down a drive and Rondo ballwatched while his man cut behind him. While we hoped Rondo would spark the lethargic offense, that kind of stuff hurt at a key moment. “We didn’t really have any offensive pop that whole quarter,” Vogel said. He had a turnover, as well, to start the fourth. In Rondo’s 18 minutes, he was a -18. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-3 shooting to go with 1 board, 7 assists, 3 turnovers and no fouls in 18 minutes.

Daniels -- -- He sank a step-back elbow jumper and a garbage-time three. He was in the rotation, but pretty invisible. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-4 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 17 minutes. He was a -4.

Cook -- -- In for garbage time, nothing worth noting. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-1 shooting from three (2-2 from the line) in 3 minutes. He was a +5.

Dudley -- -- This is the sub that should have happened early in the game. He came in for the final couple minutes of garbage time instead. We would have been so much better off if he played in this one instead of Kuzma, who was a wet noodle out there. He would have likely given better shooting and smarter execution against the zone and much better D. The Stats: He had 1 offensive board, 1 assist and 1 steal in 3 minutes. He was a +5.

Vogel -- -- Key Moment: Has he had a tech this season? He picked up one after KCP had what looked like a great defensive sequence on Porzingis and was called for a foul on the perimeter. Then KCP didn’t get a foul on a runner on the other end on a similar sort of body contact type of play. So Vogel got a tech. This was followed by a no call on LeBron at the rim. The Lakers fell back by 6 at this point, getting a bit caught up in the officiating that was taking them out of the game. The Mavs had an 11-2 run to start the second half off this. KCP would pick up a tech a few minutes later and the Mavs lead would balloon to 20 points.

Key Sub: The Mavs bench in this one outplayed the Lakers. In the first half, the Mavs thoroughly outscored the Laker bench and gave Luka plenty of rest while cutting into the Laker lead. In the second half, they held serve again. The Mavs bench scored 47 points (Wright scored 17, Jackson scored 15) to the Lakers 29. Rondo was a -18, Kuzma a -15.

Key Stat: The Lakers struggled to control their defensive glass. Early on in this game, they were getting one and out possessions and turning those into break opportunities. Later in that game, they could have used that to spark some offense. Instead, they were giving the Mavs second and third chances. The Lakers gave up 16 offensive boards. Those were especially painful when the Mavs would knock down one of their 17 threes.

Dad duty with my 2 children, was tough to get the entire game in properly, but I did see the meltdown in the 3rd, unfortunately. Looked to me even the first half we caught a break in that Luka was off. I felt that Luka was gonna get going and that we needed to get a bigger lead than 3. Felt a big Mavs running coming with Luka in the 3rd. Have been telling anyone who I discuss basketball with that the next LBJ-AD is Donic-KP. They are gonna be a nightmare in the league, and with KPs elite 3 point shooting and perimeter skills, and Luka's elite ability to get to the basket and dish, it will be a lethal combo for years to come. KP is only going to get better as he gets back into things after 2 years almost off basketball. Once KP gets back to the post and mid-range game he had in his all-star season as a Knick, man, that may be the best duo in the NBA for the next decade.

For us, I thought the third, we went into the paint a lot hoping to get some good shots, but wound up taking contested shots. We wanna use our size and skills inside to get great shots. We did not get them, and then we were being fouled and didn't get the calls either. Frustrated, then we sat back on D a bit, and saw Dallas get us with their strengths.

Would have probably liked to see less of McGee in that 3rd, and maybe Frank pull him for Howard or Caruso early in that 3rd to get some life into the team, as they seemed to be frustrated. Also felt we have not been able to play dominant defense since Bradley has been injured. We need that set the tone defender, to get our D where needs to be. Can not outscore and shoot great from 3 every night. Gotta get back to getting teams under 100 again sometimes.

We beat them in the paint, we beat them in fastbreak shots. Seems we just couldn't get enough 3 point shots to fall when we needed them. To compensate for a bad shooting night we needed to maybe dominate in the paint, and we did not. Meanwhile they dominated us on the 3 point line. That's all it comes down to sometimes. You catch a team that is on from 3 and you're off. Then you can't do what you do best (dominate the paint match up). It's as simple as that sometimes. Somethings we can learn from this one - is that we need to get our 5s involved in more screen and rolls. Dwight is still elite at finishing at the basket and we barely use him as an offensive player. We need to get AD moving more in the offense. the 3rd we saw a little too little movement from AD.

These things happen in the long NBA season, and a 10 game winning streak had to end. Probably the right time, as the last 2 weeks we have seen this team play some bad games/halfs and turn it on and win.

Thanks DB and Wolf. The Lakers D has dropped off significantly over the last couple of weeks. Luckily, we were playing some truly lesser teams and won despite the holey D. So when we ran up against the #1 offensive team, we couldn't mask it any longer.

I thought LBJ was cussing at those who didn't hustle back while he was scrambling on the floor for the loose ball before the half. It could've been a momentum push (17 yr vet forcing a TO, diving on the floor, but then having to wait for others to join the fray?) going into the half. Instead, the Lakers came out flat and confused.

I hope they can re-capture the defensive mindset. The next roadie is gonna be tough.

Damn 1 o'clock trap game. I knew it. Not bragging because losses at 12-1 have been the norm for decades. To quote Jack in 1987: "We're not a daytime ballclub....it's just not that way...".

Kuz sucks this year. I don't think he's gonna pan out into a consistent player at this point of his career. Wouldn't be surprised if they move him, too. I've been patient. Remember where he was drafted. He wasn't that heralded a player in college and he had a good rookie year which I think was the best of his career. He's struggled to adapt to not starting and doing whatever he wants. He's expected to do two things that he's not that great at: playing man D and hitting treys. He's a better scorer on the break and in transition and while slashing. He's not the brightest bulb either. Ingram didn't fit well with Brawn, but Kuz has thus far not fit with Vogel, which is arguably worse.

Still a long way to go, but the kid doesn't seem to give off ANY sense of hunger or urgency. He doesn't play hard like Caruso it seems to me. He doesn't seem to be miffed at his mediocre play, playing 15 mins fewer a game than last year, or being yanked for long stretches usually because of defense. Even KCP seemed to be more aggravated by his initial slump from hell and he has shot well ever since. I don't know if Kuzma is ever gonna look like the kind of player who excels on a championship team as opposed to the teams of prior years where the damn FO and coaches would proactively announce that the playoffs weren't ultimately their goal. He's not a hardened, scrappy player. He's soft and carefree. Anyone think it's gonna be a good idea to have him out there for too long in the playoffs? Answer that one first if you think I'm being hard on him.

^^Kuz is not passing the test that’s for sure.

He is unplayable at this point if this was the playoffs. Put him in and you probably lose the series against most of the other contenders. Maybe you get away with it in round 1 if it’s a team like the Suns.

I’ll say this: the call where KCP was t’d up for being pushed by an illegal screen by Powell into Luca was pure BS. But that didn’t lose them this game.

What did was piss poor defense and embarrassing offense in second half (only 29 points by the 3 minute mark in 4th!). Btw this is with LBJ and AD playing most of the time.

Luka reminds me of Tom Brady. He is just so elite in terms of his feel for the game that I don't see how anyone stops him from winning time and time and time again.
This Mavs team is not the one you wanna face in the playoffs.

We're either afraid of the 3 point line or we can't hit 3's in a game that is ever increasingly favoring 3's over low % 2's

It was a rough night for us from outside, we could have gone 11-27, and it is a closer game, and you never know. We do well in close games. All our losses have been games that got out of hand after the 2nd or 3rd Q.

The thing about our 3 pointers, most of them are open ones. We take a few early offense 3s and some iso 3s with Lebron, but outside of that, most of them are really good looks that the Lakers have created through ball movement, We should be making them, a lot more of them. When we struggle, it hurts us a lot. So that is why Danny Green and KCP are key. Our offense began to flourish when Green and KCP were hitting their outside shots. It is not like we suddenly began shooting less 2s and took more 2s. It was that for a stretch of a few games we began to make our open 3s at a quality rate.

Danny went 2-8 in this one.
Kuzma went 0-5.

(BTW Lebron went 0-5 from 3, but he is not our designated shooter).

Those are basically 13 shots, most of which were likely open (I do not recall all of them). And we made just 2 of them. If we hit half of our open shots, the ones that are not contested, then the number of 3 pointers we shoot is fine. In games we do this, we do very well. It is when we can not hit even the open 3s at 50% that we are in trouble.

It comes down to me that the Lakers need to keep looking via trade for 3nD players at all spots on the floor around AD-Lebron. Danny Green is legit, he had an off night. But Kuzma has been shaky this year on both ends, even if he is trying to play his role the right way (in championship pursuits no time to wait). We gotta look for 1-2 more 3nD players that make us even more formidable. Then we can a) make more of our open looks from 3 and b) start to think about taking even more.

The only thing wrong with our offense is that we become lazy at times and start to just let Lebron pound the ball or AD force feeding. That is quite typical of a 2 superstar team, even the Shaq-Kobe teams use to suffer from that. What we need to do is ensure that it happens less and less, and we need to make our open 3s (again, not contested or isolation 3s Im talking about) at 50% or better. The league is too much offense right now to win without quality outside shooting. We have some quality with Green, but we need more. Dunno what KCP we will get in the playoffs. Can not trust Kuzma yet. So we should look for more 3nD help.
