17 Wins... It was in the 2015-16 season that Byron Scott’s Laker won 17 games all season -- a franchise low mark. That 17th win, of course, was Kobe’s epic final game where he dropped 60 before riding off into the sunset.

Of course, anytime a superstar retires, a franchise goes into severe rebuilding mode. Who knew then that in 2019, we’d be sitting here reloaded with LeBron and Anthony Davis? Those two have helped the Lakers hit that 17-win mark while we are still in November. What a difference.

This one had the makings of a trap game. First game back from a road trip, the day after Thanksgiving, the Lakers playing loose defensively lately and running into a high-scoring offense in the Wizards. All the signs for trouble were there.

And they were for the first few minutes. The Lakers looked cold, tired and uninspired for the first few minutes. They were quickly down 9-0, playing with no sense of urgency.

Vogel would call a timeout a few possessions later. Whatever was said right there, the team responded. They went on a 29-4 run and didn’t look back from there. They blew out the Wizards 125-103, leading by as many as 39 points.

The Lakers have won 10 straight. Nice to take care of business and get an easy one.

LeBron -- -- Uninspired ball to start the game, shaking off that turkey coma. He was forcing passes that weren’t there and then not getting back well in transition off those turnovers. He had 4 turnovers in his first stint. The Wizards capitalized on that before the Lakers could get their energy up and break a sweat. That didn’t last long, however. The shot started falling in the second quarter and he started getting to the rim. The passes started finding teammates for scores. He had back-to-back finds of Howard on a set play (variation of a stagger screen that I don’t think we’ve seen) for a lob dunk and then a full-court pass that Green caught and scored a layup while in air at the rim. He’d have 16 points and 8 assists in 17 first half minutes. He was in full LBJ show mode by the second half, dunking in transition, hitting a lefty floater, the three ball, finding teammates again and again for scores. The Lakers blew the doors open those first 5 minutes of the second half with a 18-0 run that his fingerprints were all over. This is how you load manage LeBron, who wants to play every game. Just blow teams out and keep the minutes low. The Stats: He scored 23 points on 9-16 shooting (4-8 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 11 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 6 turnovers and 1 foul in 27 minutes. He was a +28.

Davis -- -- He scored 15 points on 4-6 shooting along with a couple of blocks in the first quarter. He caught Hachimura twice on a couple of highlight rejections that sent him flying. AD would finish the half with 19 points. The Wizards just looked a bit too small for him. He’d sink a three in this one, stepping into it nicely, but not a lot of three ball like we saw on the road. We’re really looking comfortable against the zone when he’s out there. The Wizards tried to run it briefly and he got the ball in the middle and high-lowed to McGee for a dunk to end that. He’s shot a team-high 88% from the line prior to the game, but he missed several tonight. The Stats: He scored 26 points on 8-15 shooting (1-2 from three, 9-12 from the line) to go with 13 boards, 2 assists, 3 blocks and 1 foul in 27 minutes. He was a +28.

Green -- -- He got the three ball going tonight. He sank a couple of threes and scored a transition layup in the first half. Then, drained another three in transition early in the second half to force a timeout. I don’t know what percentage he shoots on those pull-up wing three in transition, but it sure feels automatic when he gets those looks and is able to lean into them. We’d match him up with IT defensively. That length was enough to deal with IT, who’s not as explosive as he used to be. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-6 shooting (3-5 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +18.

McGee -- -- Dunks and freethrows tonight for McGee. He had a great high-low from AD for a dunk, another on a hustle after a loose ball in the backcourt. Add in a couple more scores off interior feeds from teammates. He came back in for garbage time to get some extra run and pad the stats. This was his second double-double of the season. He was glad to get the court time to help his guys. “We all have to back them up to make sure they don’t play 35 minutes every game,” McGee said. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-7 shooting (5-6 from the line) to go with 11 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 3 turnovers and 5 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +3.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He matched up with Beal in the first half and we kept him to just 4 points on 2-6 shooting. Beal visibly slumped not getting a pass in time out of a timeout in the third (McGee hedged a little to make the passer second guess). There was always that help and double teams off the screens. KCP and company were able to successfully cut the head off the snake of the Wizards offense. Beal would get 18 points, but the Lakers were nearly up 40 when that was happening. KCP was playing with good energy tonight, which the team needed. He went all out hitting the floor in the backcourt trying to chase down a loose ball and that led to a dunk for McGee. Offensively, moved the ball well, not a lot of scoring. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-6 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists and 3 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +23.

Kuzma -- -- To end the third quarter, he landed on the foot of another player while pulling down a defensive board, twisting his ankle. That cut his night short. He tried to start the fourth, but you can’t really tell how much that ankle will swell up until after the game. He was playing unselfish ball to start the game, making the extra pass maybe even to a fault. He scored off a floater and jumphook in the paint, but missed his jumpers. He was mostly off-balance on his jumpers. It’s pretty amazing that he came into this game shooting 36.2% from three after going 3-23 from behind the arc to start the season. Since then, he had shot 22-46 (47.8% from three) to bring his percentage up. He’s averaging 4.9 attempts per game, second on the team behind LeBron. Only three Lakers average in double digits for the team, Kuzma is third with 12.3 points per game (he’d score just 4 points tonight). Hopefully, he’s okay. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-7 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 17 minutes. He was a +10.

Howard -- -- He brought some chippiness to the game in the fourth quarter. After taking a flagrant, he hit the FTs, then took a bounce pass from Caruso, hammered a defender with the body then hammered over him and yelled to pick up a tech. He’d later get called for a charge in the post and then Vogel would finally pull him. Good to see some intensity out there in a blowout. The refs sure have been quick on the whistle with him, though. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-4 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +5.

Caruso -- -- Early foul trouble, picking up a couple in 3 minutes and having to sit after a quick first half stint. That meant more minutes for Cook and Daniels. It’s rare we see AC in foul trouble and kind of interesting that Vogel wanted to protect him from picking up his third. He’d grab a few boards, miss a few shots, get a steal. Nice feed to Dwight for a dunk, but not a lot offensively. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-3 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -2.

Rondo -- -- He faced the standard scouting report, go under the screens, leave him open and he made them pay with 13 points in his 11 first half minutes. He sank 3-4 from three and got in the paint for a couple more scores. Throw in a couple lobs to AD and LeBron and you had an impact first half. Very nice. With the blowout, we didn’t bring him back in the second half. Plus, Cook was also playing well. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-7 shooting (3-4 from three) to go with 1 board, 4 assists and no fouls in 11 minutes. He was a +15.

Daniels -- -- I’m not sure we’re allowed to have both him and Cook hitting in the same game. Since Cook was scoring, Daniels shot blanks. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-4 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 steal and no fouls in 13 minutes. He was a -1.

Cook -- -- Great to see the shot come back to him. He was hitting jumpers and threes, looking automatic again. That opened up the drive for him for a couple scores there, as well. He has been shooting well under his career marks, so he’s going to be trending upward. It’s just a matter of time. Really nice game from him tonight. When he’s got it going, he scores in a flurry. Show it to me with a little more consistency, please. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 7-11 shooting (3-4 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 23 minutes. He was a -2.

Dudley -- -- He got some run with the blowout. He missed a three, which hurt his percentage. After starting the season 4-4 from three, he’s missed his last three. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-1 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 2 assists, 2 steals and 1 turnover in 14 minutes. He was a -7.

Vogel -- -- Early Key Moment: LeBron played lazy ball out of the gates and the Lakers fell down 9-0, then 15-4 when Vogel called timeout. No sense of urgency and they paid for it. They got a score and then forced a shotclock violation on D out of that. A 29-4 run for the Lakers after that to go up by 14. They would lead 37-23 after the first quarter.

Key Sub: Up 30 with 4:20 left in the third quarter, he sat LeBron. He sat AD with 2:23 left in the third up 28.

Key Stat: Pick one: With 2:40 left in the third, the Lakers had 101 points. Or, the Lakers kept the Wizards to 103 points for the whole game.

Thanks, DB! Felt good to see LBJ and AD sitting through the 4th with smiles on their faces.

Good to see an easy win for a change. I wish Vogel would give Caruso the green light to shoot in blowout game like this. Run plays for him the whole 4th quarter to try to help him build some confidence in his offensive game. We’ll need him to score more at some point this season.

Anthony Davis defensive field goal % in this game - 11.1% (Players shot 1-9 on him). DPOTY continues his dominance.

Dwight Howard DFG% was very good as well, players shot 5-13 on him 38.5%

Alex Caruso DFG 40% players shot 4/10 on him.

Danny Green DFG% 28.6 players shot 2/7 on him.

We got some really good shot contesting players on this team. AD, Dwight, Green, Caruso, and once Bradley comes back, you have 5 guys that will compete and contest every shot.

Thanks DB!

I few random stats I find interesting on this year's team

- 4th in fast break points (16.2ppg)
- 4th in effective FG% (54.5%)
- 8th in fast break efficiency (1.913)
- 4th in points in the paint (53.2ppg)
- 1st in blocks (7.5)
- tied for 2nd in def efficiency (0.992)
- 5th in opponents effective FG% (49.8%)
- 6th in opponents 3pt% (33.5%)
- 4th in assists per game (26.6)
- 6th in steals per game (8.5)
- 22nd in rebounds (53.3)

Source

I am loving everything we are doing because if they stay healthy it is sustainable. My only gripe: the bolded. No reason why we shouldn't be top 5 in rebounding given how long we are as a team.

This year's frontline might be better than ones we had 2008-2010's. Time will tell.

Yeah, that's pretty surprising that our rebounding is that poor. I wonder why it is?

^ My theory: teams don't wanna test our frontline in the paint. That means they are shooting long 2s and 3s which lead to long rebounds that bounce their way? Not sure tbh.

I know Hachimura got discouraged after AD put him on his wallet twice with vicious blocks. Don't think I've ever seen that happen to a player twice in one game.

Based on the eye test, I don't think one can conclude that we are outhustled and outpositioned for rebounds. We are getting the rebounds we are supposed to get.

We are also shooting a pretty high percentage offensively, so we aren't getting offensive rebounds that we would get if we missed more shots. I guess that's another explanation.
