Five Straight... The Thunder are good at keeping teams from running on them, holding opponents to 10 points a game on the break. The Lakers dropped 30 on them tonight, turning blocks, turnovers and rebounds into transition opportunities as LeBron and Rondo pushed the pace.

“You want to explore potential fatigue by your opponent,” Vogel said of attacking the Thunder on the second night of their back-to-back.

The offense was clicking with 30+ points in each of the first three quarters before both teams slowed a bit in the final quarter. KCP would hit a huge three with 55 seconds left to help the Lakers finish off the Thunder 112-107.

“We did enough to get the W,” Vogel said.

Anthony Davis would score 34 points to lead the team, and LeBron James would record a triple-double. The Thunder was the only team he hadn’t clocked a triple-dub against.

LeBron -- -- Nice sequence in the first half where AD got beat on the perimeter, LeBron rotated to steal the ball, knocked it to AD, who gave it to LBJ, who gave it back for the layup. That forced a timeout out of just awesomeness. After the timeout, LeBron knocked a ball loose to AD, who then hit LeBron for the breakaway dunk. We were really pushing the pace. That might have resulted in an extra miscue or two. LeBron was turnover prone to start this game with 4 turnovers in his first 15 minutes of action. He’d pick up more in the second half, looking like he might go for a quadruple-double (finished with 7). He said Kidd was on him after the game about those turnovers. He got his triple-double and is now the first player to have a triple-double against every team in the league. (To be fair, some of these teams were around back in the day.) They had CP3 defending LeBron to close the game. We didn’t set him up down low in the post on several trips down court. He did get a huge offensive board tap out that led to a KCP lead, finally making the Thunder pay for that. I think they’ll prepare a little before for that in the next game, and hopefully LeBron is able to clean up the turnovers. He’d miss a couple FTs also in the final 30 seconds, but thankfully that didn’t hurt us. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 10-21 shooting (2-5 from three, 3-5 from the line) to go with 11 boards, 10 assists, 2 steals, 7 turnovers, 2 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a +6.

Davis -- -- Vogel mentioned after the last game that he needs to try to get AD the ball while in motion a bit more. The first play of the game tonight was a pick and roll sequence with LeBron to get AD an And-1 layup. Not a lot of that for him, however, in the first half despite AD scoring 19 points. He was more relegated to the pick and pop, where he was burying threes. If that’s dropping, it’s game over. The offense just becomes too easy for him. They’d work more of the two-man game action in the second half for midrange looks or finishes at the rim. Getting that perimeter game in the mix made a big difference. I don’t like hall the ball died down the stretch of this game, but overall, much better job working the two-man action for AD. Defensively, he was a problem for whomever he was guarding. Just very disruptive and he again came up with some big plays down the stretch. “We have to do a better job defensively, especially with Avery out,” Davis said. Hopefully, we can see a few more of these bigger scoring games as we integrate him into the offense better. We’ll need to play smarter on offense come December and the harder schedule. The Stats: He scored 34 points on 13-24 shooting (3-5 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 4 assists, 4 steals, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a +1.

Green -- -- More foul trouble in the first half, limiting his minutes. Really quite night. He had a couple of scores early, a layup rolling to the hoop and a three. (He actually hasn’t shot that well at home. Prior to this game, he was at 31.6% from three at home. On the road, he’s at 57.7%.) And then was just a floor spacer for the rest of the night. Not much action. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-3 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +2.

McGee -- -- He helped set the tone early by disrupting shots in the paint, but faded a bit in that first stint. I don’t recall if he’s closed a game this season but we brought him back early in the fourth to help finish. He had plenty of rest in the first half, so no wind issues. I think we may have wanted him to switch more and use his length to challenge better than Dwight was doing in those perimeter areas (and, of course, around the rim). He’d have a couple nice challenges in that fourth and a putback dunk. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-5 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards (4 offensive), 1 steal, 4 blocks and 4 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -5.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Coming into this game, he’s scored 29 points in his last two games combined. That’s just about a similar total of his previous 7 games combined. Tonight, he kept up with the strong effort, hitting threes (3-4) and attacking the rim. He sank a huge three with 55 seconds left that helped the Lakers checkmate the Thunder down the stretch. Very good two-way effort. We ran him 32 minutes and it seemed like long minutes waiting for him to return and help with the perimeter D. “Confidence,” AD said. “It’s all about confidence.” Keep it up, KCP. He tied for the team high on the +/-. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-9 shooting (3-4 from three) to go with 4 boards (2 offensive), 2 assists and 1 foul in 33 minutes. He was a +6.

Kuzma -- -- He was popped in the face twice in his first stint. The second time drew blood getting jabbed with a finger. He went to the locker room and played just 9 minutes in the first half, scoring 5 points. He didn’t return. His eyelid was swollen like he’d been in a fight. He was available if we needed him. He’d sink a three and a lob dunk in transition for his points. Prior to this game, he was shooting 32.7% from three, which is pretty remarkable considering the awful start where he went 3-23 from three. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-4 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 1 turnover and 1 foul in 9 minutes. He was a +3.

Howard -- -- A couple of nice blocks in transition to save layups in the first half, but also took a couple of goaltends in the second half that seemed a little out of frustration. Throughout his career, he’s averaged about 34 minutes per game. He’s down to 20.8 this season. I thought he might get more minutes in this one with Kuzma out and Dwight coming in early in the third, but we took him out early in the fourth, so his minutes were down as we pretty much closed with McGee before going small in the final minute or so. He’ll need to tighten up that midrange area or switch a little more in the next game against OKC. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-2 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards (4 offensive), 1 steal, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a +4.

Caruso -- -- He’s got a quick trigger on that three ball and sank a couple today. Both his threes came from the corners. Give the team 3 and D and you’ll get the minutes. We’ve struggled with some of our other bench guards providing neither of those. Lots of scrappy plays throughout. He had a defensive board tap out when he was the only guy under the hoop against Adams. That little stuff adds up. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-6 shooting (2-4 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a +0.

Rondo -- -- “Rajon’s statistics are not measure on a stat sheet. He’s measured in swag,” Vogel said, meaning he helps the team play that way. You can still measure the 10 assists he had tonight. He came in midway through the first to get warm while LeBron was still out there, but we then went to a trio of Kuzma/Cook/Rondo, which again had some defensive issues (Lakers gave up 20 first half points to Schroder). The pace with Rondo out there was much faster. He had a sequence in the second quarter where he hit Caruso and LeBron with back-to-back bounce passes on the break for layups. The highlight play on the break, however, was to close the first half when he picked up a long rebound, pushed it out with speed and lobbed to LeBron with a second left for the dunk. He had 9 of his 10 assists in the first half. The Lakers scored 20 points off turnovers in the first half and had 23 fastbreak points, against a team that is stingy on giving up fastbreak points. Not a great shooting game. He was aggressive, but not efficient. We need to pick up the pace a little more in the half court sets. The ball will sometimes stop in LeBron and Rondo’s hands and the offense kind of grinds to a halt. The team had 29 assists. Rondo and LBJ combined for 20 of those. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-10 shooting (1-4 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 10 assists, 3 turnovers and no fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +6.

Cook -- -- Last game we tried rotating Daniels in with the Rondo/Kuzma lineup. Tonight, Cook got in the mix. That’s not going to help anything defensively. Lakers were super soft. Felt like he was thinking pass only on some plays where he should have thought shot early in the game. But the ones he took later, like wide open corner threes, that he clanked...just making his minutes worse. We definitely miss Bradley here as these bench units are giving up some runs. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-5 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 2 boards and 1 foul in 15 minutes. He was a +2.

Vogel -- -- Once again, the Lakers D was disruptive early and they forced a timeout up 11-4. That combo of length with McGee/AD causing problems… The Thunder came back and Vogel brought Kuzma in for McGee midway through the quarter… Lakers up 3 when Rondo came in for Green, then Green in for KCP. Better defensive combos there… AD, Kuzma, Caruso, Cook, Rondo lineup. So a little different than the Daniels version the previous game. So not really a difference defensively... An 8-point lead was cut to 4 with 2 minutes left and he called a timeout… Dwight in for Cook on final defensive stand of quarter… The Lakers led 33-28 after the first quarter… Howard, Kuzma, LeBron, Caruso, Rondo to start the quarter… The Lakers were giving the open midrange looks to Schroder in the first half (he’d finish the half with 20)... Some transition buckets for the Lakers with Rondo finding teammates… LeBron and Rondo both sat at the same time to go with Howard, AD, Caruso, KCP, Cook unit… Green in a moment later, so Cook the PG now up 6… Rondo back in for Green, who picked up his third foul. An 11-point lead was cut to 3… LeBron returned to close the first half, and the Lakers pulled out to a 10-point lead… They led 63-53 at the half. The Lakers had 17 assists… After scoring on the first possession, the Lakers then gave up a 10-0 run to start the half. Vogel quickly called a timeout with the lead about erased… The Lakers got out in transition again as the D tightened up and they forced a timeout… Rondo in with 5 minutes left for Green Lakers up 7… Interesting sub here with McGee going out with 4 minutes left and Dwight coming in. Kuzma’s injury forcing them to rotate Dwight in earlier instead of Kuzma. They usually go with AD at C. Lakers up 7 still… LeBron out for Cook shortly later… The Lakers led 93-87 heading into the fourth… Howard, LeBron, Caruso, Cook, Rondo lineup… Up 8, we quickly subbed out Howard for McGee barely a minute into the quarter. Kuzma injury forcing things to be mixed up here… Cook just playing awful… Rondo out for KCP up 7… Up 7 when starting lineup returns with Green for Caruso with 5 minutes left… McGee out with 1:32 left for Rondo… LeBron had what looked like a clean block on Gallo with 1:24 left and we didn’t use the coach’s challenge (maybe the refs got him down low with the off arm, but that might be a key time to use it with the lead just 2 with 1:24 left)… Big three by KCP gave the Lakers a little breathing room in the final couple possessions...

LeBron looks like he needs some help out there at times. He gets a little tired and tries to pass the ball to a teammate to make a play, but they just pass it back to him, so he has no choice to try to make something happen on his own. The whole offense just seems to grind to a halt when that happens... no movement and usually a bad shot or turnover by LeBron.

Having said that Bron is winning just about every game for us imo.

Thanks DB. Really happy to see KCP break out out his funk a lil bit. He hit a huge 3 to ice the game. Good to see.

Oh, and AD will be DPOY. He's insane on defense. He's so versatile and long that I would trust him to guard Greek Freak or Kawhi in crunch time moments if need be. Special special player we got there who is just entering his prime. Wow.

A few low IQ plays. First a few blocks off the board that were goaltends.
Then a foul that was from way out on Adams when he was not even a threat to score.

Right after the sub, Vogel went over to him on the bench, and had a chat with him. Don't know what was said, but something was, and IMO it was a message (in bringing in McGee) to Dwight that he has to be better in those areas.

Interesting to see if next game we see less of that from Dwight.

Thanks DB! Appreciate you taking time away from your family every game to put this analysis together. GREAT CATCH: "The Thunder are good at keeping teams from running on them, holding opponents to 10 points a game on the break."

KCP has been a stud ever since DH stuck up for him. DH may be the best overall team mate on the Lakers. Did anyone notice when KCP hit a big 3 and the Thunder called a time out? DH was motioning to the fans with his hand around his ear.

Nice work as always DB. I know you're not taking suggestions right now but I meant to say that the coaching recap can sometimes be hard to read and turn into a wall of text. Maybe a break here and there or splitting it into halves would make it easier on the eyes. Or is it just me?

I totally agree. It’s just one big block of text, so it’s the one I part that I rarely read. Maybe each thought or recap of what the coach did should be separate to make it more readable.

Seemed like Rondo was feast or famine out there last night. He had some great passes, and I like that he pushes the pace more when he comes in. However, it often seems like he's freelancing out there on the offensive end instead of running a structured offense. There were a couple of hot potato passes to AD that had me scratching my head. AD was at the top of the arc, passed it to Rondo on the left wing, and Rondo barely let the ball touch his hands before passing it right back to AD. Even AD was confused by those passes because he clearly wanted Rondo to initiate the offense. Anyway, I like what Rondo CAN bring to the table with his playmaking, but he needs to be more disciplined when it comes to organizing the offense.

Also, Cook needs to hit his wide-open Js. Nuff said.

Avery Bradley 55
Alex Caruso 53
Kyle Kuzma 20
Rajon Rondo 10
Kostas Antetokounmpo 2
