Along Comes the Offense... The Lakers got into a shootout in the Valley of the Sun. When the dust settled, Kyle Kuzma was the gunslinger delivering the biggest shots of the night.

It was a back and forth battle all night. The Suns trio of frontcourt bigs would knock down 10-15 threes, but it was the Lakers PF with the biggest two of the night. He sank two threes in the final two minutes to stagger the Suns, while the Lakers got key stops they needed to take the 123-115 road win. Such is life in the modern NBA with your stretch bigs.

The Lakers had 39 assists tonight with just 10 turnovers. They integrated Rajon Rondo off the bench, and that helped the second unit and Kuzma find some offensive flow. The ball was moving all night, except when LeBron took some air out of it down the stretch (and combined that with some difficulties from the line).

But the team’s extra passes late in the game led to the biggest makes of the night.

“That’s the secret for us. If we truly commit to the extra pass offensively and playing for each other we’re going to be near unbeatable,” Vogel said.

LeBron -- -- The freethrow shooting tonight nearly killed us. LeBron went 2-7 from the line. Throw in several misses in a row down the stretch on iso and it wasn’t pretty. Still, he nearly contributed another triple-double. He had 9 points and 8 assists in the first half, but the rebounds weren’t there. So most of his work in that first half. (LeBron would finish with 11 assists and just 1 turnover.) Despite the big scoring game for the team, this actually felt like much less of a burden on LeBron than a lot of games earlier this season. First, we added Rondo in the mix to take some offensive load. Second, we have some set plays that don’t involve a lot of movement from him that others can score and create off of. Hopefully, we can string together some easier wins and get him a stretch of rest. Minor irritant of the game tonight...how close was LeBron to the 8-second violations? There were several where he just made it over midcourt with fractions of a second left. The refs were really watching closely, too, as the game went along. That internal clock in LeBron’s head must be pretty synchronized. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 8-18 shooting (1-4 from three, 2-7 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 11 assists, 1 turnover and no fouls in 37 minutes. He was a -2.

Davis -- -- Late in the second half, we started milking the post against the smaller Suns defenders. AD was fired up after a face up drive past Saric for an And-1 throwdown. Some nice sequences with LeBron on the two-man game, but also now we had Rondo into the mix. The two of them quickly combined for a lob dunk off ADs backdoor spin. He led the Lakers with 14 points on 7-11 shooting in the first half. He was grimacing in pain a couple of times this game. He took a shot to the ribs early on. We called a timeout at the end of the third to take him out after he had helped force a turnover and dunked. He was in discomfort and went to the locker room shortly later. He’d return and get back out there to mix it up. We look to him to be a big scorer, but he makes so many little plays...those are huge in close games. He kept a missed freethrow alive on one sequence and later drained a deep three against the shotclock on that possession. He got in on enough of a challenge at the last second on Booker in transition to force a bad miss on a layup. He also pulled down a big board in a crowd that looked like it was going to the Suns. All that little stuff adds up in crunch time. The Stats: He scored 24 points on 9-17 shooting (1-2 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 12 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 38 minutes. He was a +6.

Green -- -- Once again, he picked up early foul trouble. This time two fouls in 2 minutes to start the game. He bounced pass, though, and had some big moments. He sank three threes, including a zone buster from the corner. He kills from the corners. I liked that Vogel went back to him defensively late in the game. We were switching a lot, so it was nice to have his length out there. But he also can play Booker reasonably well on set plays defensively. We did bring him in to help ice the game late for FTs, he missed one of those like everyone else. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-8 shooting (3-5 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +7.

Bradley -- -- How huge was that offensive rebound off LeBron’s missed three with 2 minutes left? It led to a Kuzma three. A possession later, Bradley would swing the ball to Kuzma for a corner three, as well. “That was the extra pass we were looking for...that was the biggest play of the game,” Vogel said. Those were huge winning plays tonight. Prior to this, Bradley was in on some key offensive sequences. How effective have the coaches made him with that horns stagger screen sequence? We’ve seen it a lot, but the Lakers milked the hell out of that tonight. Bradley comes off the stagger screens from the corner and takes a handoff from his big in the high post and the defense has to make quick decisions. The bigs roll to the hoop where he can find them for lobs or other passes for easy finishes. If they leave Bradley, he has the midrange he can go to. If they don’t commit, he can get to the rim. The stats actually don’t look impressive, but this felt like about a 17-point game or so, impact wise. He was just extremely efficient when we ran that play, which is just huge. It gets AD and LeBron a chance to rest and gets the other guys involved. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-8 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 2 offensive boards, 5 assists and 2 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -7.

McGee -- -- I think you’re kind of seeing the sub pattern we will stick with for a while here. McGee starts, we then go with Kuzma, then later Howard and possibly bringing back Kuzma again. That means a couple short stints for McGee. He needs to make the most of it. On offense, we are finding some pet plays. The horns stagger screen sequence got some reps tonight with Bradley and his bigs. McGee had a dunk off Bradley’s drive and dish off that. AD fed him for another dunk. He attacked himself from the high post for a dunk. Bradley would find him again off that for a dunk. They were killing off that. The end result was 11 points in 11 minutes for McGee...and a lot of practice on our options out of that play. Defensively, we struggle against three shooting bigmen. Lakers nearly paid the price for that tonight (and their missed FTs). The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-5 shooting (1-3 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists,1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 11 minutes. He was a -3.

Kuzma -- -- How huge was Kyle tonight? He got roasted in the last game. Tonight, he looked more like the Kuzma fans envision. It started early. He had 13 points in the first half on 5-8 shooting. With Rondo out there we got into transition a little more, which is where Kuzma thrives. We’ve been a bit slow and plodding in that aspect of the game. Kuzma changes ends with speed and passers can take advantage of that. He also bailed out the offense a couple of times with late clock jumpers. Fast forward now to 3:47 left. Vogel decides to go small and bring in Kuzma for Howard. This would allow the Lakers to space the floor more for the close and Kuzma didn’t disappoint. He sank a huge wing three after Bradley got an offensive board with 2 minutes left. He would then sink another corner three off a swing pass shortly later. Those were punches that staggered the Suns for good tonight. “It kind of clicked a little bit. I know I can shoot Kuzma said. He probably lost the Lakers game, but he’s been the guy who sparked the team in a couple of wins, as well. I love seeing him in this close games around the vets. These are learning moments for him. He needs as much of that as he can get before we get to the playoffs. The Stats: He scored 23 points on 9-16 shooting (3-6 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +10.

Howard -- -- He and Kuz combined for 35 points on 60% shooting off the bench. He picked up two moving screen fouls and a touch foul under the hoop in just a couple minutes to start the second quarter. The refs really seemed to look at his screen setting, which makes you think back to that much viewed illegal screen in Dallas to free up Green for three. Seems Dwight may be paying the price for that for some time. Despite the early foul issues, Vogel left him in for that second quarter. We maximized his minutes, playing him that entire second quarter despite the foul issues. Dwight even got to go at it in the post a little against some smaller defenders during that stint. In the fourth quarter he was battling on the offensive glass for an And-1 and he also had a dunk off that horns stagger screen sequence we ran so much. I’m ready to see some blowouts now. Get our trio of LeBron, AD and Dwight locking down and the offense throttling up. It’s time to crush some teams like Dwight crushes opponents on screens. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 6-9 shooting (0-1 from the line) to go with 9 boards (2 offensive), 1 assist, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 5 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a +3.

Caruso -- -- He was all up in Booker’s business like an IRS audit. The game within the game was fun to watch. In the first half, Caruso drew a charge on Booker in the post, which seemed to make Booker a little hot-headed. Booker tried to go at Caruso a couple more times without success right after. Caruso hounded him around screens and played his usual feisty defense. Later in the second half, Caruso would draw an off-ball charge on Booker in early offense, which again got Booker into whiney face mode. Booker would get his points, but we made him work and, here’s what you want, we forced him into 5 turnovers. If you can make the opponent stars cough up the ball and uncomfortable at times, that’s all you need. Give Caruso the assist of the game in this one off Bradley’s offensive board. Caruso just turned around and was like, oh, Kyle’s open, here. Bang, big three. I love that Vogel is giving Caruso 25 minutes even with Rondo back. Forget the politics, play the guys who make an impact. Caruso led the team with a +15. His only points were a baseline drive and two-handed jam against the zone. Hopefully, at some point, the offense grows as his confidence does on that end of the floor. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block and 1 foul in 25 minutes. He was a +15.

Rondo -- -- He came in for LeBron late in the first quarter. Normally, this has been a Carso sub, but we weren’t taking minutes away from AC (we’d take them from KCP and Daniels, maybe a little Cook). We kept our same pattern of bringing back LeBron to start the second quarter, so both Rondo and LeBron were on the floor at the same time, but we didn’t keep that too long. In the first half, after a couple of minutes, we sat Rondo for Cook. During his 7 minutes in the half, Rondo had 5 assists and hit a three when they left him open. In the second half, when those two overlapped, we had the ball in Rondo’s hands more, which made it harder for the D to sag off and help elsewhere. Still, they would at times. The pace picked up with Rondo in, which helps a guy like Kuzma to get going. Rondo also makes passes only LeBron can make, so that help Kuzma and AD on a few occasions get the ball near the rim. On Rondo’s two scores tonight, one was a three when left open, the other was a layup after freezing the D with his behind-the-back pass fake. You hope his addition take some of the load off LeBron and might allow us to play LeBron and AD together with more frequency. Also, Rondo can make that second unit work offensively with the ball in his hands. “We had a 120 offensive rating. That’s the highest of the year, I believe, for us. Him running that second unit the way he did and orchestrating and getting us to play with pace and keeping us organized was a big factor in the win tonight,” Vogel said. Rondo was on a minutes restriction, but this is roughly the amount of minutes I’d like to see. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-6 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 6 boards, 7 assists and 1 foul in 14 minutes. He was a +4.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- We saw the hook in the last game. Vogel stayed tight with the minutes tonight. KCP got his only score on an ATO at the end of the third quarter, his only shot. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting in 8 minutes. He was a -2.

Cook -- -- More minutes than KCP tonight. He came in in the first half for Rondo and quickly hit a three. He added in a couple assists including a handoff sequence with LeBron where he found LeBron diving to the hoop shortly later. I like seeing him take over Rondo’s spot when we switch gears and put the ball in LeBron’s hands and now we need a shooter. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-3 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 2 assists and 1 foul in 9 minutes. He was a +9.

Vogel -- -- Kuzma in for McGee after 3 minutes after foul trouble… KCP in for Green, Lakers up 1… Down 5 shortly later after giving up a couple threes, timeout Lakers… Rondo in for LeBron out of that… Down 7, Caruso in for Bradley… Kuzma getting out in transition (Rondo really helping here) and the Lakers cut the lead down… The Lakers trailed 29-26 after the first quarter… Howard, Kuzma, LeBron, Caruso, Rondo lineup… Dwight picked up two cheap ones in a minute. Vogel left him in. Dwight picked up his third 30 seconds later. Vogel kept him out there. Dwight plays limited minutes, so why not?… Rondo out for Cook to put a shooter around LeBron, Cook instantly hits a three… Lakers up 1 when Green came in for Kuzma… Down 2, he sat LeBron for AD at the 5 minute mark (so 7 minutes rest for AD). Out of that, we got a lob dunk for Dwight on the ATO… The Lakers went to the post multiple times against smaller defenders during this stretch, using both AD and Howard… The Lakers led 60-58 at the half. The Lakers had a 10-2 advantage on the break (they’d win the fastbreak battle 12-10 on the night)… Back and forth action to start. The Lakers milked the horns stagger screen sequence with Bradley going to his right for score after score until the Suns finally called a timeout… Lakers not getting any stops. They called a timeout and sat McGee for Kuzma, but also Rondo for Bradley… Green out for Caruso, Lakers up 4 with 3 minutes left… Timeout with AD hurting with half a minute left in the quarter. We got a KCP open jumper for a score on the ATO… The Lakers led 95-92 heading into the fourth… Howard, Kuzma, LeBron, Caruso, Rondo lineup to start the quarter… Up 2, we sat Kuzma for AD with 8:41 left in… Rondo out for Bradley with 8:24 left and Lakers up 2. So Howard, AD, LeBron, Caruso, Bradley… Green in For Caruso with 7:37 left, Lakers up 2… Lakers down 1 Caruso came back for Dwight with 4 minutes left… Kuzma in with 3:47 left, score tied, Green out…. Lakers up 4 with 2 minutes left, forcing at timeout after Kuzma hit a three. Kuzma would sink two big threes in the final two minutes… Green subbed in with 25 seconds left for foul situation. He was fouled for FTs up 5, he made one… Suns made 16-38 from three (42%). The Lakers sank 10-25 (40%)... Lakers combined that with a 70-46 advantage on points in the paint...

Nice win. Suns concerned me with that offense. Hopefully Lakers can give AD some rest tomorrow and still win.

Classic DB! Mid-season form in only 10 games!

Very entertaining game. It's great to have contributions from everyone not initialled LBJ or AD. Kuz, aside from his late game heroics, really kept the team close in the 1stQ. Rondo showed some spunk in quality minutes. AB is an unsung hero on the team. Glad to see AC in there at crunch time. He's earned it. Our centers go 11/14 from the field and combine for 23 and 12.

Hopefully, Rondo's return shortens LBJ's playing time. He has looked a little weary the last couple of games.

Thanks DB. I must admit, we may have caught a break. Lebron's ball movement (or lack thereof) during the last few minutes was awful. The Suns failed to capitalize. Good win against a good team that is a difficult match up for us. The Suns are for real and they are without their big dog.

Nice to see the Lakers have a game where it was high tempo, offensive, modern style game, and yet the Lakers offense was able to not only match the Suns, they were able to outscore them. In a repeat match ups when the Lakers have seen what the Suns bring, they will defend them better. This team and Dallas has been the two best teams we have faced on offense. Both teams have very good combination of outside shooting big men, 3 point shooting, and triple threat guards who are good at backdoor cuts.

We have not been a dominant team on offense. We have had moments. That was a dominant game by us, look at those paint points and assist numbers (70 PITP, 39 assists).

Vogel made some good decisions in this one.

1) Began running the offense sets he used to use in Indiana, where he has both bigs at the elbows. This was leading to a lot of easy open looks for Bradley, McGee, Howard. Same action even when it was other guys. However Bradley was really good at this play.

2) Rondo ran the second unit beautifully, and Vogel made sure Rondo was out there when Lebron rested. Excellent.

3) We saw Dwight-AD-Lebron PT. More please. We saw it for a significant time. Also like Kyle Kuzma having all his minutes at 3 (not the case in this one, but we saw more Kuzma and Lebron lineups. Lebron is a PF basically so if Kuzma gets abused on D, Lebron can switch).

Rondo was big in Kuzma having the game he did. As soon as Rondo checked in he found Kuzma on a break. Then, Kuzma moved again off the ball and Rondo found him again. When players start off a game like that, with a PG setting them up, it gives them confidence and a rhythm. Kuzma came up big even without Rondo and credit to him. That is the 3rd option type of guy we need. However Rondo is a key guy in this. He is our best playmaker, he can do post entry passes like no one else. He can find guys on the break like no one else. As good as Lebron is, he is not the same direct free flowing passer Rondo is. If Rondo is used in the right lineups and limited minutes, sort of like Dwight, I think he can be a huge asset to the team on offense.
