The China Trip ... With the Rockets GM raising the ire of the sensitive Chinese government, the Lakers and Nets were thrown into controversy of no doing of their own. There was no guarantee the game would even be played as China canceled various events around the game and the broadcast. Who knew this preseason game would be part of an international incident?

The two teams kept it to business, taking the floor and focusing on hoops.

The Lakers mixed up their starting lineup and rotations a bit, testing different combinations. The stars played reduced roles again tonight and Vogel let the deeper bench players finish out the game.

After 5 clutch points from Zach Norvell to tie the game up with 28 seconds to go, the Lakers stole an inbounds pass. But Demetrius Jackson couldn’t finish a breakaway layup to take the lead. A subsequent foul and the Lakers had a 3-point switch. Despite that, KCP still had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but couldn’t knock down a good look the three. The Lakers fell 114-111.

LeBron -- -- He missed quite a few chippies in this game. The jumper looked good, however. We pulled him a little early in the first quarter to let Rondo run with AD, then brought LBJ back in the second quarter. Vogel trying to make sure he kept one playmaker on the floor at all times. I’m not sure how well LBJ will like Rondo in that starting lineup. It really mucks up the spacing for LeBron. We saw it work a bit better in the second half with Rondo more aggressive, but it’s an issue. We missed him closing as the third unit was a bit of a mess. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-15 shooting (2-3 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 25 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He scored a layup off the roll from the wing as Rondo hit him in stride. He missed a runner in the paint. He drained a wing three coming off a stagger screen to catch the ball. Stripped when they sagged of Rondo as he attacked. He attacked in early offense and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a tough fade on the break, not a great look. He sank a wing three in early offense. He tried to iso on a big and was blocked. He missed a short fade in the paint. Full speed in transition to earn FTs. He sank a long baseline jumper. He pumped and swished a jumper straight away. He drew a charge. He choked a reverse after blowing past his man. He choked a layup in transition. Second Half: He attacked off the three line and scored a layup. He missed an up-and-under he should have had. He missed a sideline three on iso. He scored a layup on the secondary break action.

Davis -- -- A lot of freethrows in the first quarter (7-8), which also helped the Lakers get into the bonus early. The jumper still isn’t quite falling, although he did knock down an open one tonight. Having him at the PF and out on the perimeter on occasion, he really takes advantage of it by changing ends quickly. Teammates are finding him on the rim runs and it’s causing opponents some problems. He showed off the passing game tonight with 5 assists, including a nice one to Rondo after slamming on the brakes and finding Rajon with a bullet under the hoop. Defensively, he’s extremely disruptive....the rotations under the hoop, the challenges on the perimeter, he forces a lot of misses. On the perimeter, he might want to be a hair closer to his man when they are a threat from three and rely on having one of his other bigs patrolling the paint. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 4-10 shooting (0-1 from three, 8-9 from the line) to go with 5 assists, 1 steals, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: Fouled in the post, he drew FTs, he made one. Rim run and he drew more FTs, he made both. He attacked, ran into Rondo’s man, turned away, then fired a pass to Rondo under the hoop for a layup. He missed a jumper as Howard’s man came to help (Howard cleaned up the miss). Leak out and he drew more FTs on a long outlet at the rim, he made both. He smothered his man to force a miss. He posted up, spun and missed the one-hander. Great help D rotation to swipe an oop at the front of the rim. He drew more FTs battling on the offensive glass and ending up on the floor, he made both. He made a tech FT. He missed a layup on the drive, but McGee cleaned it up. He hesitated, then rolled and AC hit him on the oop for a layup. He drew a charge in transition (going to the floor again). Turnover and foul on an awful offensive set. He attacked and hit a floater. He missed a 20-footer. He sank a wide open 17-footer. Nice challenge on a jumper to force a miss. Second Half: He missed a short one off a duck in at the front of the rim. He missed a wing three. He spun away from the double team in the post and dunked.

Rondo -- -- He got the start today. We didn’t see that chemistry between him and AD like in the last. Rondo still had some moments. He was a but sub par in the first half with a combination of poor defense and some sloppy play. There was a sequence in the half where you could see the double-edged sword of Rondo offensively. The Nets had left him open like teams do and he made the open three. Next time down, they sagged off him again and forced a turnover on LeBron as a result. The challenge is if he can hit threes at such a high clip that he spaces the floor. In the third quarter, he looked better as he got a bit more aggressive, hitting a couple of jumpers and drawing FTs. Defensively, he didn’t have to deal with Kyrie as he popped Kyrie in the face on a loose ball on the sideline and that ended Kyrie’s night early in the game. So, we didn’t have to worry about that situation defensively. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-13 shooting (2-3 from three, 2-2 form the line) to go with 5 boards, 6 assists, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He hit LeBron rolling off a stagger screen set for a layup. Not covered in transition and he missed an open 17-footer. Wide open and he hit a three straight away. He missed a wing three on a switch. AD drew Rondo’s man’s attention and then fired a bullet to Rondo under the hoop for a layup. Lost on D, he gave up a three. He missed an open 18-footer when the D sagged off to help on LeBron. His lob pass on the break went out of bounds when AD slipped or was pushed. He was rejected badly in transition. He missed a floater, got it back and scored the putback. Unnecessary help and he gave up a three. His lob pass was picked off. Second Half: He sank a baseline pull-up. He threw an outlet away and gave up a three. Late reaction to Harris cutting and he gave up a three. He sank an open three left alone at the top of the arc. Weirdish bank runner in the paint, not sure if that was intentional or not. Aggressive attack in transition and he drew FTs, he made both. Good help and it looked like he got his hands on the ball on a baseline drive to force a turnover. He then fed LeBron for a layup. He probed and threw it away.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- KCP had a great look at a three to tie the game at the buzzer and couldn’t knock it down. Better game from him overall. He had some moments on D on the perimeter which was nice to see. He sank three threes and moved the ball well. If this could be more in line with a sort of minimum outing type of game from him, that would be a lot better. It wasn’t great, but you’d like to see some kind of minimum level of impact from him with consistency. Then, throw in the occasional big game like we’ve seen from him. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-9 shooting (3-8 from three) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block and 3 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: Nice challenge on his man’s pull-up to force an airball. No rotation on a poorly executed ice sequence by teammates and we gave up a dunk. Better rotation to disrupt a play next time down. Another good challenge on a jumper to force a miss. He sank a baseline pull-up attacking off the three line. Miscommunication with LBJ on a switch to give up a score. He missed an early offense three. He missed a wing three off a handoff. Second Half: He swished an open three in transition off the advance pass from Rondo. Good help D rotation to get a stop under the hoop. He sank a three straight away in early offense. He missed a wing three on a swing pass. He let a man get past him to setup FTs. He sank a wing catch and shoot three. He missed a pull-up three in transition, but got it back. Good challenge on a three against the shotclock to get a piece of it. He missed a three to tie.

Howard -- -- A little bit foul prone in this one, but I liked his aggressiveness at times on his man defensively. Offensively, he had a putback dunk and scored on a post up but not a lot of action or touches despite starting the game. Solid again on the glass. You definitely see where there’s potential defensively, but Cousin’s dynamic on the offensive end would be night and day. Just the passing and perimeter abilities could really help some of these lineups. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-2 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 5 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He regained a possession battling on the offensive glass to draw a foul. His man left him to help on AD, Dwight dunked back in AD’s miss. LeBron found him under the hoop for FTs, he made one. He sagged too far back on the drop coverage and we gave up a three to Harris. He was called for an illegal screen knocking a man down (probably needed to keep his hands lower and next to his body, but weak and they called it a flagrant, double weak). He stripped his man on the perimeter, getting into his chest, then was fouled. Second Half: He kept an offensive board alive. He was called for a loose ball foul on offense to give it back up. He backed his man down and hit he lefty jumphook.

McGee -- -- I really like the length when he is in the starting lineup. It’s a problem for opponents on both ends. The team tends to go one and out a lot more on defense. We get this second and third line of challenging at the rim. Offensively, he’s putting a lot of pressure on the offensive glass. He led the team with the +11 doing the little things like crashing that glass or swatting shots. A little turnover prone in this one and a ridiculous moment leading the break and trying to spin with the dribble. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-6 shooting to go with 10 boards (4 offensive), 1 assist, 3 steals, 5 blocks, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: Offensive foul battling for post position off ball. He tipped in a missed AD drive. Great help D challenge at the rim to force a miss. He bobbled a pass off a great sequence between him and Caruso, then traveled to blow the sure dunk. He was stripped on a defensive board. He missed a baseline turnaround at the buzzer. He swiped a ball, pushed it out and the mustard came off the hotdog on a spin and he was tied up. Second Half: He sank a hook in the middle of the paint after a rim run. Great job helping and then breaking up a lob pass on recovery to get a stop. He missed a sky hook on the baseline. Offensive foul trying to get post position. He swatted and controlled a shot. He cleaned up a missed drive by AC. He couldn’t handle a lob, recovered it and as he fell down found Caruso in the corner for three.

Green -- -- He shot blanks from three tonight coming off the bench, but he did knock down a couple of midrange jumpers. Fairly poor game with no a lot of impact offensively. Defensively, he had a couple of moments, but the three turnovers himself with as little possession time he has, yikes. But chemistry issues are to be expected early on. The Stats: The Action: He missed a wing three in transition. He sank a baseline pull-up jumper. Pressure D at midcourt to nearly force a turnover (8 second violation would occur on the subsequent backcourt inbounds as a result). He sank a step-back 10-footer off the dribble. He threw a pass away expecting Bron to roll. He took a dribble and bricked a long two coming off the screen. He fumbled a pass on a backdoor cut. He missed a step-back sideline three. He missed a pull-up at the FT line. Second Half: He was stripped on the perimeter.

Bradley -- -- He hasn’t shown much of a game yet. He did get a couple of steals in this one, but he’s a bit too invisible out there on both ends. Some nice reaches on help D to be disruptive. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-6 shooting (0-2 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He attacked a big and was easily swatted. Sloppy recovery trying to challenge to aggressively and he gave up FTs. Nice dig on help D to pop a ball loose and ignite a break. Backdoor cut and LBJ hit him for the layup. Good challenge on a three to get a stop. He missed a floater in transition. Second Half: He was fouled on a 15-foot pull-up for FTs. He gave up an And-1 to Nwaba. He missed an open corner three. He missed another a few seconds later. Great reach on help to strip a man. He cut and Caruso hit him at the elbow for the short jumper.

Caruso -- -- Actually, thought this was a sneaky good game by Caruso up until the last couple minutes. He was thrown in some bad lineups late in the game and had some poor moments trying to be the guy on a crap lineup late in the game. That’s not his role. What I liked was the scrappy defense throughout. He was very disruptive with rotations and recoveries. Offensively, he sank three threes. Awesome. The best of those started on a superb recovery to block-strip his man from behind on one end, then drill the three trailing the break on the other. He was aggressive in the paint. I picture a few misses at the rim being cleaned up by our real bigs. There was a drive in the fourth he missed on that Cacok barely got off the ground at the front of the rim. AD or McGee that’s a dunk. A couple misses, though, he was swatted badly trying a bit too much. Still...11 and 8 in 22 minutes with 3 steals. He’s bringing some impact. Definitely outplayed Bradley in these first two. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-12 shooting (3-4 from three) to go with 2 boards, 8 assists, 3 steals, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 22 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He ran the two-man sequence and hit AD rolling on a delay for an oop layup. He slipped on back-to-back offensive sequences (one resulted in a turnover). Nice hustle in transition to knock a ball away and get a stop. He attacked and threw up a wild shot/pass. Excellent job on one defensive sequence to fight over the top and disrupt a play, then to rotate on help D in the paint and disrupt another (eventually we got the turnover). He swiped another pass next time down to ignite a break. He hit LeBron for a jumper. He hit a floater off the two-man game. Second Half: Heads up advance pass to Cacok to him for a layup. He attacked off the split and missed an easy one but McGee cleaned it up. He sank an open corner three in transition next time down. He missed a pull-up three with the shotclock low. He attacked at the end of the quarter and was easily blocked trying to score a backhand layup. Nice bounce pass behind a defender to Bradley for the short one in the paint. He ball-faked but missed a layup. He drained a three straight away on a return pass. He hit KCP for a wing three. He backdoored his man, took the bounce pass and scored a layup. He was stripped in transition and wanted the foul. He missed a drive after drawing a big. He recovered to his man and rejected him from behind. He got blocked on a drive. He deflected a pass jumping into the passing lane. He picked up his dribble and got blocked in the paint.

Norvell -- -- He came in with a minute left in the third. Some nice moments for the rookie. He’s decisive, which you’d like to see. He came up huge with a three with 0:42 left and then a steal, which led to two FTs. He tied the game on that with 28 seconds left. Well done, rook. Love the confidence on both ends. Keep showing me that. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 2-3 shooting (1-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 13 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He drained a long wing jumper on his first touch. He missed a rotation to give up a dunk. He set up Cacok for FTs on the other end. He missed a wing three. He traveled on a drive. He drew an offensive foul staying in front of his man. He sank a wing three with 0:42 left on a kickout from KCP. He then stole the ball at midcourt and was fouled with 28 seconds left for FTs down 2, he made both clutch ones..

Jackson -- -- He probably cost the Lakers the game, choking the finish on a layup after a steal Cacok caused with 28 seconds left. That ended up being a 3-point switch and the difference maker. Bummer. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-7 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 10 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He bricked an open three badly. He missed a drive from the corner. Pressure D to force a turnover and we hit him for the subsequent breakaway layup. He bounced to Caruso backdoor for a layup. He missed a pull-up 16-footer. Offensive board and he was fouled. He was blocked in the middle of the paint. He missed an open three. He came up with a loose ball at midcourt but couldn’t finish with 22 seconds left.

Cacok -- -- The bulk of his action was during that fourth quarter garbage time. He had to go up against DeAndre Jordan down the stretch, which maybe allowed DJ to be more disruptive on D than he had been. Cacok nearly made a game-winning defensive play with a steal at midcourt on an inbounds pass in the final minute. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-4 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He flashed to the ball, took the pass and hit a jumphook. Caruso found him changing ends for a layup. Good hustle to keep an offensive board alive, going to the floor. He was fouled trying to finish at the rim, he missed both. He got tapped on a shot in the middle of the paint. He helped steal a ball at midcourt on an inbounds with 28 seconds left.

Vogel -- -- Lakers in the bonus early as AD drew some fouls… The score was tied 21-21 when the Lakers brought in McGee for Howard and Bradley for KCP, who picked up two fouls with 4:45 left… Green in for LeBron with 3:50… Caruso in for Rondo with under 2 minutes left, Lakers up 4… Lakers led 32-29 after the first… McGee, LeBron, Green, Bradley, Caruso lineup to start the second quarter… Lakers up by 2 when Howard came in for McGee after 5 minutes… Rondo and AD back in for LeBron and Caruso, who played especially well on D… LeBron back in for Howard… The Lakers trailed 57-55 at the half... Same starting unit in the second half… Dwight picked up his fourth foul and McGee came in with 10:29 left, Lakers down 3… Lakers up 75-73 when LeBron and AD sat midway through the quarter... McGee, Cacok, Green, Bradley, Caruso lineup. Not a pretty mix on paper… The Lakers led 87-84 heading into the fourth… Cacok, Green, Norvell, Bradley, Caruso lineup… Up 1 with 10 minutes to go and he went with Howard, Cacok, Norvell, KCP and Jackson. Garbage time… The Lakers sputtering and down 2, he brought back in Caruso for Cacok… Cacok back in for Howard, Lakers up 2 with over 5 minutes left… Lakers with a chance to win and their play busted as the first option was taken away and we coughed it up...

Thanks again DB! If Vogel is switching lineups, I hope he keeps on switching them. It wouldn't be crazy in preseason to start Caruso alongside Green. Then sub in Bradley when AD sits, or Rondo when LBJ sits. Just to see how that works, right?

While I'm dreaming it sure be nice to see how Kuzma, and THT for that matter, change the dynamic in second and third units. Here's hoping Kuz's MRI goes well.

AD was tweaking his shot with Lethal Shooter over the summer, right? The early returns haven’t been great, but the sample size is tiny. I expect we will see him get back to the deadly mid range game AD had in previous seasons, but until we do I’m going to stress about it a little bit.

"McGee -- -- I really like the length when he is in the starting lineup. It’s a problem for opponents on both ends."

I find myself a bit giddy at the union of McGee & Davis. It's an outstanding length & skilled combo. It was those two coming out with Lebron that I think moved DeAngelo to see almost a "fantasy" lineup.

I loved the prospects of those two playing well together on certain nights.
Nights when Lebron is doing his thing, and a player like Troy Daniels is lighting it up like he can. There will be nights like that.

Thanks DB!

in china , we often have a birthday party at home or in a eating place to have the meal collectively. and we usually consume the birthday cake after the meal.occasionally we play a few games during the birthday celebration .for instance,we dance or sing and so on.or we regularly buy a unique present as a birthday gift . we can also make a stunning birthday card as a birthday present .i assume that is also a terrific way due to the fact it's miles full of pleasant
