If there is a chance the games will be cancelled, NBA should have gotten ahead of this and cancelled the exhibition games before both NBA teams actually flew over there. Not really fair to disrupt two teams and make them fly half-way around the world and back, for no reason.

I must confess a bit of in-cognizance regarding this entire issue? What exactly is going on? And, is it clear there is a wrong side and a right side?

The Chinese government took their action against the NBA when the Lakers were already on the way to China. So it was kinda too late for them.

check out what SAS said about this. He's right about Morey costing people from both US and China money and jobs with a single tweet. Should have known better.

Don't comment or take sides on complicated foreign issue you have zero clue about.

For the lakers sake I hope they return to LA ASAP and let the NBA deal with this mess Morey created.

Morey might have a clue - he doesn't seem like a dumb, uninformed guy - and the major complicating factor seems to be that the PRC/CPC can leverage the value of the Chinese domestic market against foreign corporations/entities run by folks who more often than not would ship their parents off to Uighur concentration camps if it meant a bump in their stock dividends.

Wow. Bizarro world when SAS makes sense. But then again. It's usually when he talks sports, that he sounds foolish.

What you are witnessing is a balancing act by sports leagues trying to expand into new markets but realizing that those places might not have the same rights or privileges as people in their home market. You cannot get involved in their domestic affairs or you will be kicked out, but then by participating in their market you are also turning a blind eye to whatever is happening there to make a buck.

this is how it will do down, mark my words:

league will secretly instruct refs to get rid of those phantom Harden calls during Rocket games, even more, refs will be biased against Rockets throughout the season. when Rockets failed in the playoffs again or not qualifies for playoffs altogether, Rockets will fire Morey. this way, no one from our side will raise questions on the league caved into China, and time will heal everything, NBA will be back in China in no time. the real losers in all of these are Harden, WB, Rocket fans and Morey.

Much better second statement from Silver. This is all so stupid.

Morey's timing was dumb, the PRC government's hardball stance is dumb.

That's too much of a risk and a crazy plan at that. More than likely there would be whistleblowers and the league's image and integrity will be forever damaged, not to mentioned probably a few federal laws will be broken.

Pretty cut and dry to be honest. In China if you oppose the government your life is in danger. Free speech is non existent and do people forget the Tiananmen Square Massacre? This is the NBA turning a blind eye to all the horrible stuff that happens in China as long as they keep sending that money. Now its coming to light and people are trying to be hard on Morey? No sorry, the NBA says its the beacon of social awareness well now is their chance to follow its "principles" or take the money. And the rest of the China games should be canceled ASAP.

It's not that hard. Just a point of emphasis memo on allowing "personal space" featuring a few clips that happen to have Harden show up more than once, and another point of emphasis memo discussing how we need to clean up 3 step backup jumpers "across the league."

Done and Done.

They could, but they would have to abandon the Chinese market and I don't see that period. They have identified the Chinese middle class as the next great market where they want to sell the NBA game, rights, merchandise, etc.Like all major corporations they have to expand into new markets or they stagnate as a company.

all canceled. There had been reports of LBJ walking on the streets in Shanghai since all events are canceled.

Latest news is that Silver has landed in Shanghai to try to sort this thing out. As of now the game has not been ruled out at this point. But games will not be broadcasted, and many celebrities and functions surrounding the games are already pulled.

Let's thank Morey for all of this.

Let's not go too overboard. They're high profile millionaire entertainment professionals along with being U.S. citizens. As long as they don't steal any sunglasses, they should be as safe or safer than they would be in gun happy America.

Go listen to what SAS said about this. If you want to discuss politics go somewhere else. You can't have it both ways. Don't pretend to be on higher ground when you tried to make a buck.

Don't pull the freedom of speech card when you had the likes of Sterling and Danny Ferry in the league.

you can't have it both ways. if a company or a country or a person despises communism that much, then he, she or they should not do any business with them, period. there's no middle ground, that's what they are in China, you can't have it both ways, meaning make money off of them AND maintain your high moral ground at the same time.

Stephen A Smith is clueless on this topic. If the NBA sees itself as Progressive company they cant have it both ways. Either NBA is full of crap and they just want money or they actually care about human rights like they've preached and they have to backout of China. No way around it. Or next time another social issue comes out people will just say ohh you care about this but you dont care about what's happening in China.

The Chinese government holds all the leverage here. They have shown it by starting to disassociate their sponsors with the Rockets and the NBA. Remember that 1.5 billion/5 year (300 million USD annually) dollar streaming TV deal? That could disappear into thin air if the Chinese government says no more NBA and there could be nothing the NBA could do about it.
