Dave Roberts: ‘No Cost’ To Dodgers Flipping Clayton Kershaw & Dustin May In Starting Rotation; Braves Weren’t Factor In Decision

Although Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated over the weekend there would not be any changes to the starting rotation, the club reversed course Tuesday morning by announcing Clayton Kershaw and Dustin May would flip in the order.

That put the rookie right-hander on the mound for the series opener against the Miami Marlins, and provided Kershaw with a seventh day of rest before taking the ball Wednesday. Walker Buehler remained on track to start the three-game finale at Marlins Park on Thursday.

The decision to push Kershaw back not only provides him with another day of extra rest, it removes him from the equation of facing potential postseason opponent the Atlanta Braves this weekend.

Looks like we're really preparing for the Braves.

We have an upcoming series with the Yankees. This could mean home field advantage. I wonder how we'll approach it.

Do we approach it like we approach the Braves' series and try and have our top 3 avoid the Yankees?

Who do you guys think takes May's start against ATL since Roberts doesn't want to use him (saving him for if we see ATL in October)? Gonsolin? Stripling?

It would almost have to Gonsolin as I don't think Stripling is ready yet.

Naw, we're about 3/4 of the way through the season. 50+ is reasonable with an outside shot at maybe 55 or something imo.

He was on pace to catch Bonds very early in the season, but that pace has been slowly dropping to where it is now: 53. I'll go with 50, maybe 51.

I would bet Cody hits 50-55 too. This is assuming he continues to play full time even after we clinch everything.

Y'all need to relax. He's just eating up innings right now, which has some value. In the postseason, he will be called on in the middle innings (or maybe occasionally in the 7th or 8th) to get a tough right-handed hitter or two out. He is great vs. righties and mediocre vs. lefties. Against righties, he limits them to a .159/.210/.317 line, which is rather remarkable. Against lefties, it's actually not as awful as I thought: .257/.337/.442. Still, yeah, I doubt we'll want him facing a lefty in the postseason, unless maybe it's one lefty sandwiched around a few righties, or unless he's just a long man in a game where we're up big or down big.

It’s an expensive “value” since we’re paying him a pretty big bonus for every start he makes. If his only value is to eat up innings, seems right now we have more inexpensive options.

If his only value is to eat up innings, his last 5 starts haven’t been valuable:

7/23 - 4.1ip
7/29 - 4.0ip
8/4 - 2.2ip
8/10 - 7.0ip
8/16 - 4.2ip

Total - 22.2ip in his last 5 starts.

That’s an avg of 4.5ip per game.

There’s no value in averaging 4.5ip per game because it taxes the bullpen. Maeda hasn’t hurt us because our other starters have been so good.

Pitching May and Maeda on back to back games can be incredibly taxing on the bullpen.

Considering the situation, using Maeda as a starter makes sense.

The rate with which the Dodgers use him, he'll miss about 10 innings, maybe less.

As for the beatin' on his gal part, I'd just as soon he's provided a new home next season, providing there is something in return. How do you root for your team when you can't root for the guy pitching?

I don't remember anything about beating up anyone. I just remember there was an alleged push/shove and she fell down.

They just said Jedd Gyorko is starting tomorrow at 1B.

Also they said there's still enough time for Rich Hill to build up his form and start in the playoffs.

Gonsolin starting tomorrow

Quote:
The Dodgers will require a corresponding move to recall Gonsolin from Triple-A Oklahoma City, and two moves to activate Gyorko, including one to create room on the 40-man roster.

Wonder who gets released from the 40 man roster?

At least Martin gets on base, with the walks. As a backup, I mean, he's acceptable.

If I remember correctly, I thought it was a fan wanting an autograph or something...Not sure though.

I thought it was him and his gf in the parking lot and she fell down?

TMZ Sports broke the story ... Urias -- one of the hottest young pitchers in baseball -- was arrested May 13 after he allegedly got physical with his girlfriend in the parking lot of the Beverly Center.

Was it Verlander we lost out on by keeping him?

But I agree. He'd be a perfect fit on the Cubs.

Will anybody ever catch Bonds? I don’t see it happening anytime soon. Bonds did it at a time when a few guys were capable of hitting 60 or 70 in a season despite walking over 160 times.

I would love for this to happen. He isn’t a guy that pitches a ton of innings so hopefully that helps. Some solid 4-6 innings starts from him would help a lot.

I don't know how they came up with a 20 game suspension.

Quote:
Multiple law enforcement sources tell TMZ Sports ... the domestic violence case against Dodgers star pitcher Julio Urias is "weak" based on the evidence.

We're told the video of the incident does show Urias making physical contact with the woman during the March 13 altercation in the Beverly Center parking lot -- but as one source puts it, "It doesn't appear there's criminal intent to injure her."

One source says it appears Urias used his hands in an attempt to stop her from leaving the area during a heated argument.

In other words, it seems as though he was trying to restrain her, not strike her ... though the woman DID go to the ground at some point during the argument.

We're not trying to minimize the seriousness of the situation -- but rather, this is what we're being told by people who are involved in the case.

We're told both parties have been very cooperative with investigators and are telling consistent stories about what happened.
