May I ask why the interest in Bassey, Bol, and Wilkes?

I would only consider them in the 2nd round.

i'm not high on this draft at all and haven't followed as closely as in the past I feel the Lakers will trade the pick. The Lakers have moved higher in the draft so my selections would change some. I have certain criteria I use but I need more info over the next few months. I tend select players I like and don't really care what the mocks have them.

Gotcha. It's a difficult draft to make my mind up on things. Even the guys at Hardwood Homies podcast (Mike Grib and Jackson Hoy) had me rethinking about Bassey, but I can't see more than a Mo Speights prototype. Bol, I just can't. Wilkes, admittedly, I've practically ignored all season because UCLA is a tough watch.

Kris Wilkes is the best prospect coming out of this year's UCLA team but he's a bit of a project. Dribble-drive not NBA-quality for a mid-sized wing, as is unfortunately his three-point range and effectiveness. Best qualities are mid-range jumper (pull-up and shoot rather than catch-n-shoot) and a rather slithery ability to finish off the bounce in transition even around bigger men near the rim. Lacks the lift, speed and power of someone nominally built like him, say like Wiggins. Reminded me of Darren Daye in college. His downside seemed a disinterest in staying in front of his man around the arc; seemed to swipe at the ball as his man slid past him.

I don't see him a contributor to an NBA team for another couple years of hard work on his game.

MikeLG, have you broken down Ja Morant here somewhere?

I really really like his game as I think it translates very well to the NBA.

I would even roll the dice and see if a Lonzo Ball deal straight up could be consummated for him.

Not really, because I'm not a big fan. The things he does terribly are the worst habits of the current Laker team; near zero effort on defense, ball movement dies, inconsistency as a shooter, some trouble finishing at the rim against real competition.

But the things he does great, are excellent, so I'm just watching everyone else enjoy what they see out of him.

For the Lakers:

Superstar
Tier 1:
1. Zion Williamson

Borderline Superstar Upside
Tier 2: (Added for context of talent between Tier 1 and Tier 3. There is no Tier 2 in the 2019 draft)
Markelle Fultz
Lonzo Ball

Multiple All-Star/All-Star if upside reached
Tier 3:
2. RJ Barrett
3. Darius Garland
4. Ja Morant
- Note: All 3 guys are not defensive players, hence a big separation from Tier 2. Even Fultz got blocks and steals by accident. Barrett's stock rate resembles Julius Randle (not great), and both Garland and Morant may get run over at the next level. Morant is the most instinctual forcing turnovers.

Very High End Role Players
Tier 4:
5. Jarrett Culver
6. De'Andre Hunter
7. Grant Williams
8. Jaxson Hayes - Upside pick
9. Goga Bitadze
10. PJ Washington
11. Brandon Clarke
- Note: Here's one reason why this draft isn't sexy. As great as Culver was during the season, he's not expected to be a primary initiator next level. The shot just isn't consistent enough. Then, the rest of the guys, are all 4/5s. At least 4 of them flash perimeter range in Hunter, Williams, Bitadze, PJ.

Extreme High Upside vs. Bust
Tier 5:
12. Cam Reddish
13. Kevin Porter Jr.
14. Coby White
15. Talen Horton Tucker
16. Xavier Johnson
- Note: Just a total gamble on the guards and wings at this point for future starters. Cam doesn't shoot well enough, KPJ outside of spot ups and Isos is a mess, Coby White seems more like a 6th man, THT has an undefined role, and Xavier Johnson needs a better jumper.

High End Role Players, Lower Floor
Tier 6:
17. Nickiel Alexander Walker
18. Bruno Fernando
19. KZ Okpala
20. Romeo Langford
21. Shamorie Ponds
22. Chuma Okeke
23. Rui Hachimura
- Note: The guys here with outlier development, CAN make an All-Star team. Chuma Okeke plays the way you wish Kyle Kuzma would. He's an accuracy shooter not a volume shooter. He has defensive IQ. Kyle, has the finishing and the extra half notch in athleticism.

Specialized Role Players (the reason why this draft isn't sexy)
Tier 7:
24. Carsen Edwards
25. Matisse Thybulle
26. Cameron Johnson
27. Zach Norvell Jr.
28. Jaylen Nowell
29. Keldon Johnson
30. Killian Tillie
31. Jalen McDaniels
32. Obi Toppin
Mfiondu Kabengele
33. Daniel Gafford
34. Ty Jerome
35. Tyler Herro
36. Dylan Windler
37. Isaiah Roby
38. Louis King
Eric Paschall
- Note: Added names afterward because I need to see more tape. A LOT of these guys are 1 NBA skill specialists.

Project Players - Very high Upside - High bustability, extreme variance
Tier 8:
39. Bol Bol
Jontay Porter
40. Sekou Doumbouya
41. Nassir Little
42. Lugentz Dort
43. Miye Oni
44. Naz Reid
45. Neemias Queta
- Note: This is where things get really difficult. Guys fulfilling upside are usually based on motor, health, and work ethic. I haven't heard great things about Bol Bol despite his high end skills. Jontay is a health concern. Sekou doesn't always maintain the same good habits game to game. Dort, is a total raw project, but at least he has health and motor. Oni, is the best athlete here, and I think playing in a weaker NCAA conference may have hurt his perception. He's an ACC-level Div I player. Reid's motor/IQ doesn't work on defense. Queta is a mechanical athlete.

Solid floor - Rotation Players
Tier 9:
46. John Konchar
47. Jordan Poole
48. Charles Matthews
49. Deividas Sirvydis
50. Iggy Brazdeikis
51. Nic Claxton
52. Kerwin Roach
53. Juwan Morgan
Justin Wright-Foreman
Justin Robinson
Quinndary Weatherspoon
Admiral Schofield
54. Charles Bassey
Kyle Guy

Some of these guys are 1 NBA skill players. Poole is the tertiary playmaker/shooter. Matthews is a high end defender. Sirvydis is a shooter first. Claxton is a projected switchable perimeter big. Roach is the one-man fast break. Morgan is the productive, but undersized big.

If the Lakers keep the 4th pick they should take Jaxson Hayes.

No, not in my opinion. My focus would be on Garland/Culver.

Hayes gives the Lakers the most flexibility. Leonard, Ky, Butler the most likely targets in FA. So why draft a guard? Draft Hayes, bring back McGee or sign DeAndre Jordan to mentor him.

Because guards have more playoff impact than 5s that can't shoot yet.

Agree, you draft for the future, FA & trades for now. I like Garland but Culver has bust written all over him. Lakers need length to protect the basket. If you draft Garland he will be the 3rd Guard for next several years behind Lo and FA they sign this year.

No way Hayes with the 4th pick.

The wing and guard talent at 4/5 will be too good to pass up IMO.
Gotta draft BPA, unless you're trading the pick.

I liked Hayes when I thought we may be drafting at 11/10. Now? no way.

Hayes would be a backup as well, until he develops. Nobody the Lakers are drafting would likely be a starter right away. Kids don't win rings. And the most likely FA targets are wing players, followed by bigs. (I don't buy any Kyrie to LA rumors.)

The Lakers would be better off drafting a backcourt player who can shoot. Not a wing. We're set with wings regardless. Draft Garland, maybe Culver, maybe Barrett (but he's sort of a forward). Or, trade down and get White or a big - Clarke or Hayes (just not with the 4th pick).

Are you referring to Luka?

If so, I would say yes.

Dude played 3 at elite NBA 2 guard size and was successful and arguably their best defender on a #1 NCAA defensive team.

I legit don't know what to tell you.
