Another Day, Another Loss… The Lakers fell again to the Nets tonight, despite JaVale McGee channeling his inner Kareem.

McGee dropped a career night in the loss, scoring 33 points, pulling down 20 boards and blocking 6 shots. Crazy numbers despite the Lakers 111-106 loss.

Luke went all in with the vets tonight trying to get the W. No such luck.

LeBron -- -- Not a strong first half, but he was on triple-double pace with 8-4-6. He’d finish a board shy of the triple-double mark. While he was scoring effectively, he was setting up McGee right and left all game. Ten of McGee’s baskets were assisted by LeBron. And I’m sure a couple baskets at least were cleaning up LeBron’s dribble penetration. So those two really had some chemistry going tonight. I think the Laker chemistry stopped there, though. A couple of miscues by LeBron down the stretch (losing a dribble out of bounds twice, one off a slip with 23 seconds left). He’d finish with 8 of the Lakers 16 turnovers. He had a nice chase-down block of Russell in this one. Haven’t see that this year. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 8-25 shooting (1-7 from three, 8-12 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 14 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 8 turnovers and 3 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He missed a runner. He hit McGee trailing for a score. He missed another runner. He hit McGee on the two-man game for a dunk. He quickly gave the ball back to Kuzma after an inbounds since no one was on him and Kuzma hit the three. He missed a pull-up 17-footer. He cleaned up a brick at the rim. He was stripped, got it back and scored the layup. He tracked down a loose ball and took it for the breakaway dunk. He changed directions off the screen and lobbed off the dribble to McGee. He couldn’t finish a drive. He was called for a charge on an up-and-under. He missed an easy one in the paint. He missed a wing three. He missed a corner three. He missed a FT jumper next time down. He attacked and lobbed to McGee. He was fouled muscling his way to the rim, he made both FTs. Second Half: He attacked the paint for FTs and made both. He stripped a big on help D. He fired a pass to Bullock for three. He threw a pass away. He attacked the paint and scooped a layup under a big. He tracked down Russell in transition and rejected him off glass. Interior feed to McGee for the score. Lob to McGee out of a timeout for a score. He crossed over and missed a reverse (he wanted the foul). He turned the corner and was fouled on a reverse, he missed both FTs. He missed a drive. He attacked in transition and hit McGee trailing for the dunk. He crossed over and scored a layup. He attacked and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a step-back three. He found McGee in the middle of the paint for the jumphook. He threw a pass away expecting McGee to stay in the dunker spot. He missed a fade. He kicked to Caruso for a three. He dunked off the drive and dish from Caruso. He attacked and muscled in a layup. He attacked and lobbed to McGee for the dunk. He kicked out to Kuzma for a three. He missed a three out of a timeout. He attacked hard and drew FTs, he missed both FTs, then fouled to give up FTs the other way, not smart (3-point switch). He attacked, spun and missed. He attacked and lost the ball out of bounds. He pushed it up and hit a three. He missed a step-back three. He was fouled in transition with 53 seconds left, he made both FTs to cut it to 3. He tried to turn the corner and slipped out of bounds with 23 seconds left down 3. He missed a three.

Kuzma -- -- He had 11 points on a poor 3-13 shooting in the first half. The quieted down a bit to start the second half, but still couldn’t get on a track. He’d knock down 3-11 from three, one of those makes was a half-court attempt to beat the buzzer. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 5-19 shooting (3-11 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 5 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He missed a layup in transition. He missed a three in transition. He missed a wing three. He couldn’t finish a tough layup on cut. He inbounded to LeBron, no one was covering Kuzma, so LeBron gave it right back to him and he drained the wing three. He missed another layup. He missed a wing jumper. His lob pass was broken up. He swished a running half-court shot to beat the shotclock. He missed a three in transition. He missed a corner three trying to beat the shotclock. He attacked from the wing and scored an And-1 layup, he made the FT. He was fouled on a throwdown attempt, he made both FTs. He couldn’t finish a drive. Second Half: Charge in transition. He was fouled coming weak to strong, he made both. He missed a deep three, not a good look. He sank a three off the kickout from LeBron. He missed a step-back corner three. He attacked and scored a layup over his man. He was blocked on a drive with a minute left. He missed a three and was run into with 4.5 seconds left, but no call.

Rondo -- -- He had the healthy -16 to keep the tank on track. Really should sit him more, but he’s helping the tank with the poor defensive effort. Offensively, he sank a three when the D went under the screen and he had a drive for his other bucket. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-6 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 3 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He swiped the ball from a big, then hit McGee trailing the break for a layup. Handoff to KCP for a three. He attacked the paint and missed the layup. Bad pass to end the quarter and we didn’t get a shot off. He missed a long floater, then fouled. Second Half: Quick-fire pass to McGee under the hoop for a dunk. He tapped out an offensive board. Quick change of directions and he scored a layup. He sank a three next time down when his man went under. He attacked a big and missed at the buzzer.

McGee -- -- Career-high scoring and rebounding night from McGee. Just a sensational game from him. Last guy in L.A. with numbers like this was Shaq, and the only thing those two had in common was McGee’s occasional appearance on Shaqtin’ a Fool. (In fact, technically, they said no one has combined for at least those numbers since Kareem.) Tonight, McGee was dominant. You could tell he was ready to play this one from the start. He had the Lakers first 10 points of the game and led the Lakers with 14 points in the first half. The energy was there all night. He was battling on the offensive glass. LeBron was drawing defenders and looking for him for easy scores. McGee had the occasional iso or drive around his man for a score, as well. Defensively, he was a presence all night. Challenging everything in his area. Guess he ate his Wheaties or something today. Look at these stats. The Stats: He scored 33 points on 15-20 shooting (3-7 from the line) to go with 20 boards (12 offensive), 1 steal, 6 blocks, 3 turnovers and 5 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He scored a layup om an up and under. He scored a layup on the secondary break. He scored another layup trailing the break. He finished a putback after a couple attempts. Two-man game with LeBron and McGee was set up for a dunk. He dunked off a lob from LeBron. Nice challenge on help on the perimeter to force a brick. He forced a man into a travel with his presence. Indecisive, he threw a kickout away. He kept an offensive board alive to Caruso for a layup. He broke up a play on the other end. He rejected a drive. He threw down a lob on the other end. Second Half: He was fouled trying to cram over a big, he made both FTs. He dunked off the quick-fire pass from Rondo. He scored off the interior feed from LeBron. He scored a layup on a lob from LeBron. He iso’d and muscled in a layup off a drop step. He earned FTs battling on the offensive glass, he made one FT. He threw down an And-1 dunk trailing the break, he missed the FT. He erased a drive with another block. He flashed to the middle of the paint and LeBron found him for the jumphook. He drew a foul battling on the offensive glass, he missed both, then picked up his fifth foul running in the paint to try to get it back. He dunked off the lob from LeBron. He blocked another drive. He crashed the glass, tapped one, twice and in. Another offensive board to reset the offense. He blocked another drive on the other end.

Bullock -- -- He’s still struggling with the shot. Even open, good looks. It just seems like an instant miss every time he shoots. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-9 shooting (1-6 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 steals, 1 block and 2 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He missed a forced three in transition. He was tapped on a corner three. He worked off the screen and scored the runner off glass. He missed a wing three. He swiped a dribble on help D. He missed a wide open wing three. He missed a wing pull-up next time down. He missed another one next time down at the FT line. Second Half: He swished a wing three behind a screen. He blocked a Harris drive.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- What happened to Kenny? KCP took back over for him tonight, clanking away from three. A couple of steals to show a little scrappiness. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 1-6 shooting from three (4-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals and 2 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He drained a three at the top of the arc, trailing the break. He missed a three from the same spot out of a timeout. He broke up a pass and it led to a LeBron dunk. He missed a wing three. He made a tech FT. Second Half: Swing pass to AC for the three. He missed a three in transition. He squared up nicely but missed the wing three. He was fouled on a quick-fire wing three, he made all three FTs. He missed a corner three. He swiped an inbounds pass down 5 with under a minute left and it led to LeBron FTs.

Caruso -- -- If we do land a big name this offseason, we will need to fill some holes with minimum contracts. I would not mind seeing Caruso back. He gives you energy on D and is playing consistently hard every night, always giving you something. That’s growth. If you can get that in a minimum contract and to fill a hole or two, you can’t expect much better. He wasn’t making shots tonight, but he was grabbing boards (8) and always competing defensively. Those little things add up and he led the team in +/- (difference between him and Rondo in that stat was huge). He showed the three ball, again knocking down a couple tonight. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-10 shooting (2-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 5 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He hit Chandler for the jumphook. He probed and missed, but LBJ cleaned it up. He missed a 17-footer. He went to the floor for a defensive board. He missed a wing three. McGee fumbled away a poor pass from AC. He swiped the ball from DLo and missed a drive on the other end, but had the ball tipped to him for the layup. He missed a layup at the buzzer. Second Half: He attacked and was bumped for FTs, he made both. His one-handed feed was deflected, turnover. He sank a corner three next time down. He attacked and missed a turnaround. He swished a wing three on a kickout. He attacked and hit LeBron for the dunk.

Chandler -- -- Old man Chandler was back in the mix and got his offensive game on, dropping 3 points on the Nets. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-1 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards and 1 foul in 13 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He was fouled on the offensive glass to regain possession. He hit a jumphook in the middle of the paint a few seconds later. Second Half: He attacked and drew FTs, he made one.

Williams -- -- He came in for the final possession of the first half as Chandler was back in the rotation and then briefly with a few seconds to close the game. The Stats: No stats. He was a -3. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Wagner -- -- He came in with 20 seconds left in the third. Come on, Luke. We’re running Chandler minutes now? Sigh. Let Moe get some run. The Stats: No stats. He was a +0. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Bonga -- -- He came in with 23 seconds left in the game for one defensive stand. The Stats: No stats. He was a -1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Walton -- -- Looked like he was trying for the W tonight, running LeBron 37 minutes... No Hart in the mix tonight… McGee scoring all the points for the Lakers to start… Caruso in for Rondo. Chandler in for McGee, tie score… KCP and Rondo in for LeBron and Bullock… Both teams stopped scoring for the last few minutes… The Lakers led 23-20 after the first… McGee and LeBron out midway through the quarter for Kuzma and Chandler, Lakers down 1… Chandler, Kuzma, Bullock, Caruso, Rondo lineup. Pretty sure that lineup has never played together… The Lakers trailed 44-43 at the half. The Lakers shot 32%, the Nets shot 36%. Lakers just 3-18 from three… Harris lighting the Lakers up, so Luke called a timeout, down 4… Lakers down 9 as the Nets hit three threes in a row… Nets 6-6 from three to start the third… Caruso in for Rondo, KCP in for Bullock out of that timeout… They cut the lead to 2 with 3:41 left and forced a timeout… The Lakers trailed 78-73 heading into the fourth… He started a McGee, LeBron, Bullock, KCP, Caruso lineup… They took the 1-point lead and forced a timeout… Bullock out, Kuzma in… Timeout down 4, the Lakers quickly scored 5 points out of that and forced a Nets timeout after taking the lead… An 11-2 run by the Nets to take an 8-point lead… Down 3, LeBron slipped with 23 seconds left. He sat him for Bonga before coming back in… Lakers have lost 5 straight. TWolves keeping pace with 5 straight losses, as well…

It's crazy that we've lost all these games and Hartley moved up in the draft positioning.

Thanks DB.

Why are we not seeing Bonga more often?

Kuz has been playing pretty poorly lately.

Thanks DB! Great game by McGee, thanks to a concerted effort by LeBron to feed him the ball. But a failed attempt to win using the vets just rings hollow. We should be playing the youth as much as possible to see what we got and to get them experience.

He got out of this mess called the Lakers, is now thriving, so I have to agree . . . but I could be happier.
