Starting again, Dirk still pondering one more year
Quote:
Dirk Nowitzki, who has received farewell tributes in arenas around the NBA this season, has never ruled out returning for a 22nd campaign with the Dallas Mavericks.
While he maintains that he won't make a final decision until this summer, Nowitzki's holding off on retirement now seems more realistic than it has at any point this season. That's because he feels better physically than he has since he underwent ankle surgery last spring, and the Mavs' future appears bright thanks to rookie star Luka Doncic's emergence and the trade for recent All-Star Kristaps Porzingis.
honestly find this a little disappointing. Dirk is not helping a team at this point, and will only be taking a roster spot from a young player that is more deserving, but Cuban will always give a roster spot to Dirk. Let the Mav's turn the page.

He can still hit shots here and there, but defensively he is like a planted tree. He can barely move, let alone jump. Another legend that didn't realize it was time.

It really depends on how he progresses from his injury, and his role.
He shot 41% from 3-point land last year. So if he is a backup big man who comes off the bench to shoot some threes now and then, he's probably no worse than Channing Frye and a lot of other veteran bigs that teams keep around.
And the Mavs have always liked older players.
The Mavericks had Kevin Willis as a 44-year-old backup, Jason Kidd at 38, Vince Carter at 37. In 2012, there were only three active players who had played in the '80s and they were all Mavericks -- Dirk, Carter and Jason Terry
Vince Carter is in his 23rd season in the NBA.....
I think Dirk will get a pass from Cuban as long as he can contribute and provide some sorely needed veteran leadership. Its pretty much about how much longer can his body take the toll of another NBA season.

21 seasons actually. Drafted in 1998, same as Dirk.
If either of them goes beyond 21 seasons, they will have the record for longest NBA career (21 seasons is the current record).
Haha, yeah you are correct....I was looking at a chart which split his career into 23 parts....apparently they split up the stats during the 2 times he played for different teams in the same season.

Maybe he needs to make back some of that money Cuban tricked him out of. _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” ― Elie Wiesel

Jesus Christ, man. Just retire.
He's on the retirement tour right now and opposing teams are treating him as such. He deserves all the accolades he's getting this season but another season isn't good for the game IMO. _________________ "Suck it up. Don't be a baby. Do your job." - Kobe Bryant
I hope he comes back and sucks up valuable Mavs cap space... _________________ “Always remember... Rumors are carried by haters, spread by fools, and accepted by idiots.”

I think Dirk and Vince are two very different scenario's. First, Vince is a better basketball player than Dirk at this point....but most importantly Vince is seen as like the 11th guy on the roster wherever he has been in recent years. In contrast, Dirk is the iconic face of the Mav's and I do think gets in the way of them being able to completely turn the page. Young can look off Vince and nobody really cares...but Doncic really can't look off Dirk in a Mav's uniform.
At some point you have to hang it up. IF he really wants to stick around and help the young guys come on as a coach or something. There is absolutely no reason why he should be on the roster.
It pains me to see him, chandler, etc going up and down looking like a corpse of their former self. At least VC is still going out and able to do something
