Blows my mind that these dudes came along in '63 and by '69 they were done. Accomplished so much in such little time. |

The extent to which they evolved in such a short time is amazing. They went from being a puppy love singles band to being a mature album band to being a proto prog rock band. |

Yep. They have had more lasting impact from their 5 plus years together than bands who have been doing it for the the 50 years since _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

I think their individual success afterwards had a lot to do with it. It's hard for me to disassociate any of them from the Beatles. _________________ KOBE |

Well maybe the greatest studio band of all time. But they rarely played live after achieving their initial success. Much of their studio success can be attributed to George Martin an later Phil Spector.
I prefer musicians that actually play music live in front of audiences on a regular basis. Which is what most musicians do and most never become famous or rich doing it. |

To me, they're perhaps the best example of the whole far exceeding the sum of its parts. And I really like every Beatle as soloists (including Ringo).

It wasn't because of any lack of musicianship though. They simply didn't get along towards the end, in addition to being an insanely prolific studio entity. They were putting out two records a year at one point. Paul McCartney in his 70s still performs most of the Beatles catalog with his solo band, and still sounds amazing. |

With regards to musicianship well who's to say? Only McCartney ever played regularly since their breakup. I'll grant you their metamorphosis was pretty incredible. Going from boy band to corporate psychedelic icons while maintaining the ability to crank out top 40 hits regularly is no easy feat. I just think it had as much to do with their production team and their record company as much as them as musicians. Their team was able corral the momentum of their early success and run with it in an unprecedented way.
For me I'm not so much into the perfect studio version of a song, because these are rarely captured in a single take but are built layer on layer by sound engineers and producers. It's ok, but it's not the moment in time that real music at it best can be. It is an idyllic version of what a song could be and I find these fundamentally different. I prefer the former. Give me an evening with Jerry Garcia or Lowell George on stage and I would take the over a hundred over produced hits. |
