Bounce Back… After calling out his young guys in the previous game, Luke saw the trio of Hart, Ball and Ingram respond tonight.

The pace was fast from the start. Each of the three were changing ends with speed and getting the Lakers in transition early in the first quarter. The defense struggled, however. The Lakers gave up second chances and easy scores at the rim.

Out of the gates in the second half, the Lakers started to play defense. They locked down, getting one-and-out possessions, turning the ball up court with speed and imposing the will on the Mavs. They won the quarter 32-13.

“It was time for us to go out there and have a better third quarter,” Ingram said, he’d score a season-high 29 points as the Lakers dominated the fastbreak.

Come fourth quarter, they didn’t relent. The pace slowed, but they moved the ball for timely scores down the stretch. They held Dallas to just 30 points in total in the second half.

Great effort from Josh Hart, who didn’t sit the entire second half. Luke scrapped his usual sub patterns, shortened the bench in the second half and rolled with lineups that were playing winning ball.

“We have to play with that type of intensity to give ourselves a chance,” Luke said when asked about the response by the youth after calling them out. The Lakers won 107-97 as they imposed themselves with a dominating 34-5 advantage on the fastbreak.

Ball -- -- Just a night and day difference. “First quarter I came out a lot more aggressive than I have been doing in the games we’ve been losing,” Lonzo said. This is what I was talking about. They’ve got to feel you out there. Get the team in transition, assert yourself and good things will happen. “He makes everything happen,” Ingram said, “and tonight he did a really good job pushing the pace. He got us in all our sets and when he did that, I think guys followed.” If he’s playing his pace, his confidence picks up. There was a play in the first half where he scooped up a loose ball and attacked the paint. I fairly certain he passes the ball 99 of 100 times when there’s a defender that might be there to challenge him. This time he went up with authority, not knowing if the defender would meet him, and just hammered it. That’s the aggressive we want from him at the rim and just in general. More, please. He scored 11 points on 3-6 shooting from three in the first half with a strong start. You can’t just disappear and fade from the game. I want to see continual high rebounding numbers from him. It just seems like such an indicator of his activity. His game either flows from there, or it’s a sign that he’s involved. He’s still a lost cause from the FT line, making just 1-4 from the line tonight. I think that puts him at 2 of his last 15 now from the line. Wow. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 8-15 shooting (4-8 from three, 1-4 from the line) to go with 7 boards (3 offensive), 5 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He missed a wing jumper after pushing up with speed. He sank a wing three on a kickout on the break. He missed a deep three in early offense. He grabbed a loose ball, attacked the rim and threw down (love the aggression there). Great hands to strip a man on one end, then he found Hart for the layup on the other. He swished a deep three on the kickout. He fed JaVale for the And-1 dunk on the break. He forced Barea into a brick. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He sank a three with the shotclock low. He missed a two-for-one three attempt. Second Half: He sank a pull-up 18-footer when his man went under the screen. He was fouled on a pass with no call, turnover. He attacked in transition, was blocked, got it back, missed, got it back and was fouled, he made one FT. He threw down a lob over Dirk off the Chandler back screen. He missed a three behind a screen. He leaked out off a challenge, took the pass and dunked. Poor decision to attack a crowd instead of take the wide open three, turnover (no one within feet of him and he just charged right in). He splashed down a wing three on a catch and fire. He drew FTs on the defensive glass, he missed both with 1:26 left.

Kuzma -- -- Good to have him back even if it was an awful game. Just having a more traditional PF rotation than some of the mad scientist stuff Luke likes to pull where we see explosions from the lab as a result. Kuz struggled to score from everywhere on the court. Just 2-10 from three and 2-10 from everywhere else. He looked good moving-wise. Seemed like there were no signs of the injury, but he said it tightened up on him. I’d like to see more passing when he’s struggling with the shot (and some better shot selection). Hopefully, the 20 attempts shot the rust off and he’ll be rolling in the next one. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 4-20 shooting (2-10 from three, 3-5 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He missed a runner off glass. His lob was picked off. Jab stepped and he took contact with no call, missing the short floater. He missed a three on a kickout. He attacked and was blocked out of bounds. He missed a wing three. He up-faked to lose his man, then missed the layup. Swing pass to KCP for a three. He up-faked, attacked and scored a layup. He missed a three. He iso’d and missed a floater over his man. Nice crossover and he got to the rim for a layup. He drew FTs on an inbounds, he made one. He was rejected out of bounds on a jumphook. He attacked and was blocked again on the same possession. Second Half: He sank a sideline three in transition when BI found him. He sank a catch-and-shoot three straight away. He missed an open wing three. He made a tech FT. He picked up his dribble in the post and was called for a travel. He missed an open corner three in transition. He missed a wing three. He bit on a third fake in the paint and gave up a layup. He barely hit rim on a deep pull-up three. Intentionally fouled, he made one FT.

Ingram -- -- Lonzo said he and BI talked last night, most likely as a result of Luke calling out the young guys to impose themselves on the game better. “I really didn’t want him to tell ya’ll that we talked,” Ingram said. “But the way he responded tonight was really, really good. Hopefully, we can continue to do that.” What was noticeable was the speed they played at. Better job by BI being aggressive in transition and early offense to get to the rim to start this game. That allowed him to get off to an efficient 14 points on 6-10 shooting. When he gets downhill and gets that Euro step going with those long legs, it’s really hard to stop if there’s no other bodies around. He just covers so much ground from one direction to the other off that. When the game slows down and they load up on him, he can’t get through crowds. Last year in the half court, we had Lopez spreading the floor for him. We just don’t have that this year, so always pushing pace is to his advantage. I imagine if you break down the game between his midrange pull-up and his ability to get to the rim, you’ll see how completely inefficient his pull-up game was and how dominant he was everywhere. At the end of the game, when the pace slowed instead of always settling for jumpers, he drew the help D in the paint and then set up McGee for a couple of dunks. Good spacing on the floor on some of those, but very nice to see that part of his game come out in crunch time. The Stats: He scored 29 points on 12-21 shooting (5-7 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 6 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a +14. The Action: Iso for BI to start the game, turnover. Way short on a turnaround on iso. He attacked in transition and scored an easy layup stepping around the defender. Another transition attack and he threw down. Beautiful crossover to lose one man and Euro step around the big for an easy score. He was hammered as he attacked down the lane and went to throwdown over Dirk (hit right to the head by Dirk), he made one FT. He hit a short pull-up over Dirk. He attacked off the high screen, tucked the ball in and scored the And-1 layup over Dirk, he made the FT. He missed a pull-up jumper after putting his man in jail. He forced up a pull-up and missed. He scored a layup trailing the break. He missed a short one he should have had after a hesitation dribble. Second Half: He deflected a pass to get a stop. He found Kuzma for a three in transition. He missed a short baseline jumper. Great ball-fake to get the big out of position, but then he missed the easy layup (still love it). Change of directions and he drew contact for FTs, he made both. He changed directions behind his back, then swished a fade over Jordan, not an easy shot. Nice help D to deflect a pass, he then busted out, took the outlet and dunked. Quick attack in early offense off a brush screen and he scored the layup. Give and go with Beasley and he finished a layup. Great Euro step around a defender in transition for a layup. He missed a long pull-up off a high screen. He missed a fade in the paint (if he’s stronger, he goes all the way to the hoop). He worked off the screen, attacked the paint and manufactured FTs, he made one. He dribbled into a help defender and was picked. He iso’d, drew the help D and fed McGee for the slam. Open on an elbow pull-up jumper and he missed. Quick first step off the three line and he drew the help D and fed McGee again for the dunk. He attacked the pressure D at midcourt and took it all the way for a layup, just beating the shotclock.

McGee -- -- Ingram set him up for a couple of big dunks in crunch time on drive and dishes. That helped him go from a sub par game to maybe an average one. Our C’s certainly miss their playmakers, so good to see a couple possessions like that. We’ve had too many possessions of McGee trying to create jumphooks and whatnot lately. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-7 shooting (0-1 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 3 turnovers and 5 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He was blocked on a drive. He was fouled battling on the offensive glass to regain a possession. He badly bricked a hook across the lane. He threw down an And-1 dunk in transition off the extra pass from Lonzo, he missed the FT. Awful bounce pass to Lonzo, easily picked off. Second Half: Not close on a hook in the paint to start the second half. He hit a jumphook after a couple of pivots trailing the break. Looked like he wasn’t expecting a lob and we turned it over. Illegal screen. He slammed off the drive and dish from Ingram. Another BI drive and dish dunk.

Hart -- -- Spell his name with the “e” for “Heart” tonight. Huge effort on the road after playing yesterday. “I was frustrated the last three or four games myself with how I played because I didn’t give the team energy. I didn’t give them a spark,” he said. He mentioned he wanted to control what he could control. Don’t worry about touches, just scrap, hustle and fight. He did. Loved this game from Josh. This was more like it. When he imposes himself on the glass and with hustle, good things happen. He was everywhere. Good all-around first half with 7 points, 5 boards and 4 assists. And the effort only improved as the game went along. Luke played him the entire second half and Hart finished with a career-high 44 minutes. I love that Luke rewarded him for the effort. Look at the stat line tonight. It was very reflective of the game: 14 points, 12 boards, 6 assists and 5 steals. Just huge. It make such a big difference when our guards are rebounding. They can push tempo and create easy baskets for the team. Hart was cracking back for boards and hustling after long boards, immediately turning it up court when he got that. Combine that with some strong D at times with guys his size. (When he was on Barea a couple of possessions, that wasn’t good). Second night of a back-to-back and he put in this kind of effort. Show it to me more. Reminded me of when he mentioned he was channeling his inner Charles Barkley last year. More please. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-13 shooting (1-5 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 12 boards, 6 assists, 5 steals, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 44 minutes. He was a +16. The Action: He missed a turnaround fade from about 10 feet. He attacked off a rebound and kicked to Lonzo for a three. He reversed in transition off the pass from Lonzo. He probed off the high screen and kicked to Lonzo for the three. He missed a wing three. Great tap ahead of a loose ball to teammates for a breakaway score. He missed a floater in the paint. He missed a corner three on an inbounds (not sure why we didn’t run that for KCP instead). Barea went right around him for an easy layup. He fouled Barea on a layup next time down. He hit Ingram trailing the break for the layup. Quick counterstrike after a made basket and he scored an And-1 layup, he made the FT. He was blocked but hustled back to knock the ball loose in transition D. He swished an off-balance one-footer on the baseline at the halftime buzzer in transition. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He missed an open wing three. Great help dig to swiped the ball from a guard, he then pushed it out with speed and earned FTs, he made both. Great lob pass to Lonzo out of a timeout for a dunk. He chased down a long rebound and quickly outlet to Zo for a dunk. Great job changing ends off a KCP steal to tip in a missed FT. He swished a wing three. He missed a floater off the high screen.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Quiet night from KCP. Somehow, we didn’t really need him. He sank one three for his only points. He was wide open in the corner three and you know that is going down when he’s that open. Those are like freethrows for him. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-5 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 1 steal and no fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He swished an open corner three off the swing pass. He missed a three straight away. He missed a wing three in transition. Second Half: He attacked the paint and missed the floater. He swiped a ball on a help D reach, pushed it out and missed the layup, but Hart cleaned it up.

Chandler -- -- Unsung hero during the second half. Excellent stretch of anchoring the D from the third to the fourth. Luke ran him long minutes, too, during that stretch. Just a lot of little things to plug the paint, deflect passes, challenge at the rim with verticality or spiking blocks on help D. Just a smart effort that might only be reflected in the +13. Really liked the effort on the road from him in the past two games. Maybe the back is feeling a little better, but I just see him realizing we’ve got to have stronger efforts to win games right now. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 4 boards (2 offensive), 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He kept an offensive board alive. He was stripped off his leg, turnover. He banked a layup off the two-man game. Great effort to tap out a missed FT. Second Half: He scooped up a loose ball and quickly threw it down court to BI for the dunk. He spiked a drive on help D to ignite a break. He sagged back into the paint and deflected Jordan’s pass to get a stop. Great job rotating over for verticality to deny a drive. Hustling, he kept an offensive board alive and controlled it. He got caught holding Jordan from rotating (should have let him go and maybe Kuzma finds him for the score instead).

Zubac -- -- Short minutes tonight. Luke tightened up the rotation, plus Chandler was playing great and longer minutes in the second half. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-2 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards and 1 turnover in 4 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He was fouled on the offensive glass to regain a possession. He tripped on a roll to the hoop, turnover. Again fouled on the offensive glass, this time to earn FTs, he made both. He muscled in a layup over Dirk with ease. Second Half:

Stephenson -- -- He gave up an awful putback score to his man in the first half. He just turned to watch a shot go up. His man just ran around him and scored the easy putback. Luke instantly yanked him from the game. Great job by Luke on being on top of that. (Of course, we than gave up two more putbacks on the next couple of possessions…really bad stretch for the team). If you’re a bench guy, you can’t get beat by being lazy. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting from three to go with 1 assist in 3 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He missed a corner three. He missed a pull-up three settling against the zone. He ballwatched and his man went around him to score an easy putback layup, sit down, please. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Mykhailiuk -- -- Very short first half stint. He didn’t sink a three on his only attempt. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting and had 1 assist in 4 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He missed an open wing three. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Beasley -- -- Really liked this game from him. This is what I hoped we’d see from him this year. When Kuzma is struggling, bring him in to fill those minutes and run offense through him. They did that, runningn offense through him from the top of the key or the right side. He was able to get to the rim again and again for layups. He had some weak defenders on him at times and just abused it. That’s what you have to do. Our young guys let weak defenders get passes all the time. He might have gone for 20 tonight, but banged knees in the second half and came out of the game. Beasley worked it out tonight. He’s been coming on as the season is going along. Hopefully, this becomes a more consistent thing and we consistently put him in a good position to play to his strengths. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-6 shooting (3-5 from the line) to go with 1 assist, 1 block and 1 foul in 9 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He attacked off a swing pass and scored a layup against the zone. Another attack around a perimeter defender and he scooped in a layup next time down. He faced up and sank a wing jumper. Second Half: Quick attack off the kickout from Lonzo and scored an And-1 layup going right and finishing left, he missed the FT. He attacked down the lane and his the short one-foot pull-up. He attacked next time down and was fouled on a short bank attempt off the dribble, he made both FTs. He spun in the post and missed the step-back jumper. Great pass back to BI who scored a layup. Excellent closeout to block a three on a rotation. He faced up at the sideline, attacked and was fouled on the reverse, he made one FT.

Walton -- -- He called out the young guys yesterday. Got back to more traditional PF lineups. Even benched guys who were not bringing it and shortened the rotation. Good job tonight… Defensive issues early, but the Lakers relentlessly pushed pace to start and forced a timeout down 11-9 after a series of dunks and layups… KCP and Zubac in for Ingram and McGee… The Lakers trailed 33-25 after the first quarter… Wow, nearly a wholesale change to start the second quarter (let guys warm up a little by rotating them in over time, please). Chandler, Beasley, Svi, KCP, Lance lineup… Timeout, Lakers down 13 with that unit… He brought back in Ingram for Stephenson who didn’t box his man out (great sub, you’ve got to punish for bad habits)… Others still giving up offensive boards and easy scores… Hart back in for Svi, Kuzma in for Beasley… Ball in for KCP down 10, McGee in for Chandler… KCP in for Kuzma (not shooting well at all). Lakers down 12… The Lakers trailed 67-54 at the half. The Mavs shot 58% in the first half… Quick start to the half by the Lakers and they forced a timeout down 8… They gave up back-to-back scores at the rim out of that timeout, but buckled down… Chandler in, Lakers down 5… Score tied when Ingram sat with 3:32 left for KCP… Beasley in for Kuzma down 2… Superb two-way quarter by the Lakers… An 8-0 run to close the quarter… They led 86-80 heading into the fourth… He started a Chandler, Beasley, Hart, Ingram, KCP lineup… Beasley knocked knees and Kuzma came in for him. Great stretch by Beasley prior to that… JaVale finally in for Chandler midway through the quarter. Great run by Chandler and Luke ran him extra… He sat Lonzo for KCP after Zo missed a couple FTs, good idea… He brought him back in for D. Wow. Situational defensive subs with Zo. Luke starting to recognize the strength on D finally… After giving up 33 and 34 points in each quarter in the first half, the Lakers held the Mavs to just 30 points total in the second half…

Thanks DB - missed the game, great recap, great effort by the Lakers! I hope this is a turning point regarding coming to play like it matters.

Also - good on Beasley to come back and play with focus. He's been through a lot. Welcome back.

Great to see the Lakers in the win column again!

Thanks DB. Hart, who looked like a hot mess the first half, really went all out in the second half and got the team rolling. His tenacious D got our fast break game going and Dallas could not hang. Impressed with Beasley as he was scoring at crucial times when we were having trouble putting the ball in the basket. I liked the fact that on a few plays, he demanded the ball.

Wow, what a game and what a victory. The defense in the 2nd half was something else. 30 points given up in 24 minutes. Against one of the best home teams in the league. BI, Zo, Hart, Beas all played above-average games. Hopefully they can build on this effort.

Thanks for the write-up, DB.
