This is the joke: (I think it's not a racist/homophobic joke)

During the event, Patel’s performance featured commentary on his experience living in a diverse area of New York City—including a joke about a gay, black man in his neighborhood—which AAA officials deemed inappropriate. Patel joked that being gay cannot be a choice because “no one looks in the mirror and thinks, ‘this black thing is too easy, let me just add another thing to it.’”

It's the opposite of homophobic because it pokes a hole in the ridiculous "being gay is a choice" BS. As for racist? I think black people would absolutely agree that being black in this country is not easy . . .

****computing privilege algorithm*****
****presuming life's degree of difficulty****
****consulting 2018 PC handbook****
****consulting harvard admissions protocol****

error, subject does not identify with any of the current certifiably marginalized groups; therefore that joke is bigoted

Ring, Your consistent crying about political correctness is at minimum 50 times more (bleep) and “snowflakey” than any political correctness I’ve ever come across.

I’d say let’s not beat a dead horse but according to PETA, that would make me a speciesist so I guess I won’t.

Everything is context, and the context here is a double layer of identifying with how hard it is to be in either group, let alone both. It certainly doesn’t explicitly or implicitly demean either group. The joke is at the expense of people who claim that being gay is a choice, as well as bigots in general.

It being funny is a hot take or the opinion that i think it would offend the people the joke is making fun of?

I wonder who specifically claimed offense to this joke. Were these members of the AAA who pulled him off stage white heterosexuals?

Not racist. Everyone is offended by everything these days. Don't go to a comedy show and laugh at every joke then get offended at the one joke targeted towards you. That's not how it works.

So thinking the group the joke is made at the expense of might get offended = hot take. Got it.

Yeah, that’s what I thought. The joke actually affirms how difficult life as a black person and a gay person in NYC, especially being both. The organizer didn’t get the joke and mishandled it in my opinion

well yeah

it's not a foregone conclusion that that's whom the joke is made at the expense of

plus, even if I assume it is, it's certainly not explicitly at their expense – implicitly at the most

It’s almost completely explicit who the joke is made at the expense of.

Yep. Nothing thinly veiled about it.

yeah upon closer reading I was clearly wrong about whom the joke was made at the expense of

I guess I just find it weird that anyone would find the joke offensive and I find it weird that homophobic people would speak out against it

like if they're homophobic wouldn't they just ignore it

idk

Along the same lines, Kevin Hart is getting trashed for tweets from 10 years ago and stepped down from hosting the Oscars. He's already apologized in the past but people want him to keep apologizing, which is silly.

It's important to make the distinction between this Patel's joke and Hart's tweets. Patel was telling a joke during a comedy routine. Hart's tweets weren't jokes. They were disgusting, homophobic comments - not comedy.

It's also important to note that Hart never actually apologized in the past for those tweets. He made excuses and tried to justify them and was criticized at the time for that. Which is why when he again failed to apologize when the recent controversy arose (and even tried to spin it by making it sound like the people calling him out on it were the ones in the wrong) , he was blasted for it. He only finally "apologized" yesterday.
