A W is a W… But man, the Lakers dodged a bullet.

“It’s Halloween so we had to give the crowd a scare, I guess,” LeBron said afterward.

They did just enough to win this game after losing a 19-point lead and eventually letting the Mavs tie the game with 7 seconds left. On the subsequent inbounds, they got the ball to LeBron. He pushed it up and was fouled on the perimeter with 2 seconds left. He missed the first, made the second and the Lakers held on to the win.

“We took our foot off the gas,” LeBron said.

They let the Mavs go on a 17-4 run to close the game but were able to still get the 114-113 win.

“If you mess with the game, the game will mess with you,” Luke said.

LeBron -- -- Man, glad he made that second FT with 2 seconds left or that would have lit a fire under Laker fans. He said having these close games is good for the team to learn, despite not playing well. We gave some guys some moments to learn. But glad he was the guy with the ball in that final attack. He had 12 points on 5-7 shooting and 6 assists in the first half. He didn’t get an assist in the second half as he looked to score a bit more. Good to see him knock down a couple threes. The perimeter shot looked pretty strong. Actually, everything offensively was looking a bit more comfortable. We had to play him extended minutes tonight because the bench was crap. “I like the way we played. I don’t like the way we closed the game,” he said. Defensively, he was annoyed that he gave up a corner three to Barnes late in the game up 4. The Stats: He scored 29 points on 11-19 shooting (2-3 from three, 5-7 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 6 assists, 3 steals, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 39 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He iso’d and swished the short one in the post. He found BI open for the easy jumper after drawing a double team. Quick shovel pass to Kuzma on the break for a dunk. He fired a lefty pass cross court to Ingram for the corner three. He sank a turnaround from 17 feet. He up-faked and fired a bullet to Lonzo under the hoop for a layup. His layup was blocked on the break, then he was stripped on the second attempt. He sealed his man, took the pass behind the fronting D and scored the layup. He scooped up a loose ball, had a defender on his hip and took him to the rim for an And-1 layup, he made the FT. He made up his mind he was going to the rim and bullied his way there for a layup. He pushed it up and drew FTs, he made one. He knocked a ball loose with a reach around. He got tapped on a runner and was wondering why there was no foul on an obvious hold. Second Half: He swished a sideline three. He swished a three from the other wing in transition next time down. He missed a step-back baseline jumper. He was called for a charge on the break. Bad attempt from deep trailing the break (move in closer, please). He attacked from the wing, spun to lose his man and scored the layup. He filled the lane and Kuzma hit him for a layup. He got a switch, attacked hard and drew FTs, he made both. He danced and hit the 18-footer. He missed a turnaround in the post. He missed an iso wing jumper. He was stripped in the paint. He had the defender backing up in transition, spun and scored the layup. He missed a wing jumper trying to beat the shotclock. He attacked, spun and missed. He was fouled with 2 seconds left, score tied, he missed the first, made the second.

Ball -- -- “I just had to play with energy from the jump,” he said. Indeed. I was really eager to see the +/- between him and Rondo in this one. I did not expect it to be quite this huge a difference. Lonzo was a +15, Rondo a -21. That kind of tells the story of our bench versus our starters. Lonzo’s D is just so much better. At least tonight we let him close the game defensively. While the FT shooting has shown some cracks recently, that three ball has looked very good. He sank all three attempts he took. Better game tonight with some moments of aggression. He, Kuzma and McGee do not need the ball much to make an impact. Perfect around LeBron. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-6 shooting (3-3 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 7 assists and 1 foul in 33 minutes. He was a +15. The Action: Easy lob to McGee off the two-man game for a score. He stripped a man on a drive, on the subsequent inbounds he forced his man into an airball. He sank a corner three of a kickout from McGee. He cut off LeBron’s post and scored the layup. He drained a wing three in transition (two-for-one). Second Half: He attacked and hit McGee for a score. He crashed the glass, pulled down the board and hit Kuzma cutting for a layup. He muscled his way to the rim but missed the layup. He swished a three behind a screen. He probed and missed the floater. He attacked off the three line, drew the D and fed it back to McGee for the slam. He was fouled on a cut, he made one FT (not close on the second).

Ingram -- -- Really not liking the excessive midrange game from him. A lot of these aren’t clean looks, but he does manage to somehow get bailed out on some of these. He went to work quite a bit when LeBron sat. I didn’t like seeing him do the same with LeBron out there in the final minute. He had a travel with 33 seconds left. So, I guess this is some of those learning moments LeBron was talking about. Luke confirmed they called that to try to get Ingram in some key moments like that. Although, he did say he thought BI had it going prior to that. I disagree on that. It was sketchy at best. He started off last season with tunnel vision on his drives. He’s kind of got a little bit of that going now with that midrange. Some of that tonight, I think he wanted to take advantage of smaller defenders, but it’s been consistent so far this season. Defensively, I thought he had some excellent moments smothering his man, whomever he was guarding (Doncic quite a bit). With him at SG, he’s really looked good at times on the D end with all that length. Teams have made sure to have him switch lately late in the game to go at someone else. So lots of potential there, we just need to work out the kinks offensively. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-16 shooting (1-1 from three, 4-6 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 5 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He forced his man into an airball from three. He flashed to the ball, took the pass and hit the 12-footer. He probed, drew the D, missed but McGee tipped it in easily. He sank a corner three off the kickout from LeBron. He drew an illegal screen foul on Jordan, fighting over the top. He was rejected on a drive. He iso’d and was called for a clear-out foul on the drive. He posted up and was fouled on a deep turnaround, he made one FT. He fumbled a pass, but hit McGee with an interior feed for a dunk. He posted up, pumped and missed the turnaround. He iso’d and missed a pull-up elbow jumper. He crossed over and scored a layup over his man at the front of the rim. He attacked and was blocked but McGee tipped it in. Second Half: He iso’d and clanked the long pull-up jumper. He missed another pull-up 15-footer. Great job using his length to knock down a pass and ignite the break for a Laker score. He iso’d on Jordan, spun and hit the turnaround. He missed a turnaround 16-footer. He attacked in transition and was smothered. He worked off a screen and was fouled on the pull-up in the lane, he made both. He stopped on a drive and hit the wing jumper. He iso’d and hit the baseline jumper over his man. Great job skying for a defensive board (more please) and saving it back inbounds as he fell out. He was called for a foul as he faced up Barea who flopped on a nudge (his fifth). He missed a pull-up from midrange. He was fouled on another pull-up in the paint, he made one FT. He traveled trying to create with 33 seconds left, uggh, up 4.

Kuzma -- -- He had 13 points on 5-5 shooting in the first half, but was called for charges trying to muscle his way to some layups and had to sit with foul trouble. It’s a fine line sometimes to muscling guys on the break and the refs were calling it the other way tonight. That slowed him down a bit. Luke also seemed a little annoyed with one fastbreak drive and let him know. Some better moments defensively with challenges and getting boards. More of that, please. “As long as we rebound, we give ourselves a chance,” Kuzma said. He seemed surprised a little at some passes. (The team had a few bobbles from LeBron…just not expecting him to find them.) The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-11 shooting (1-2 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 3 assists, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: He couldn’t control a weak post entry pass from LeBron, turnover. He attacked in transition, muscled the defender and scored the easy layup. He dunked in transition off the quick passing sequence from Ball to LBJ. He drained a pull-up 17-footer off the weave. Wide open on an inbounds he sank the wing three. He fumbled away a pass from LeBron, got it back and drew FTs, he made both. He blocked a layup from behind. He tipped in a missed shot. He was called for a charge on a drive, kind of weak. He was called for another offensive foul on a baseline drive. Second Half: He missed a floater he should have lobbed and McGee cleaned it up anyway. He missed a short jumphook. He pushed it up court with speed but couldn’t finish the layup. Nice D on iso to stay in front of his man and force a turnover. Great cut off Lonzo’s offensive board and he scored a layup. He hit LeBron filling the lane for a layup on the break. He attacked and traveled. He somehow avoided the charge call and the falling defender this time and flipped in the layup. He up-faked and missed the corner three, broke his rhythm a bit. He was fouled with 18 seconds left up 1, he made one FT, sheesh.

McGee -- -- “There’s always going to be mishaps and we need to put out fires,” Luke said defensively. McGee’s 5 blocks put out a few tonight. Dude is killing it on this team. And we’re running him big minutes. He played 35 tonight and was a +18. He said he didn’t feel tired or was aware he played that many minutes. He had 8 points, 6 boards and 4 blocks in the first half, just erasing shots left and right. He could stay back and patrol the paint tonight with Jordan out there not being a threat. So he roamed a bit, but was also wary to not give up any lobs. “I was trying to match his energy,” he said of Jordan. JaVale said he watch Jordan’s rebounding and made a point of doing that himself. This team could really use a physical big to go along with him, but he’s doing his best to hold down that C spot at a high level. The stats tonight…huge. More rebounds for him in five years. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 8-15 shooting to go with 15 boards (5 offensive), 1 assist, 2 steals, 5, blocks, 3 turnovers and 5 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He couldn’t finish the lob off the tip and backscreen play to start the game. He erased a layup to ignite a break. He finished the lob from Lonzo off the two-man game. Easy tip off the BI penetration. No rotation and he gave up a three. He was blocked under the hoop, got it back and found Lonzo in the corner for three. He rejected Smith’s drive. He missed a turnaround in the paint. He dunked off an interior feed. He cleaned up the Ingram dribble penetration. He bricked a bad looking post attempt. Second Half: He hit a short one off the feed from Lonzo. He jammed back in a Kuzma missed floater as he rolled to the hoop. He missed a short one over a smaller defender, then fouled trying to get it back. He threw a bounce pass away. He sent a drive into the stands with a rejection. He threw down the jam off the Lonzo attack and dish. He tracked down a deflected lob pass and hit the short jumphook. He smothered a drive and forced a miss. He missed a runner.

Hart -- -- Did not like seeing him have to switch on that final defensive stand and the Mavs attacked him for a score. Very quiet night from him. He needs to get back there, rebound and ignite some breaks. No boards tonight, which is rare (especially when he was essentially our PF for a time). We gave KCP more run tonight, which may have limited Hart’s time a little, but we did run Hart at PF again. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-3 shooting from three to go with 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He missed a step-back corner three. He gathered himself and drained a wing three. He hit the floor on D for a tie up. He missed a wide open three on a two-for-one. Second Half: He attacked, picked up his dribble and traveled.

Rondo -- -- Yeah, that -21 tonight compared to Lonzo’s +15. I’ll have to go back and look to see if that was a lot of small ball action, but we generally seemed too loose on both ends. The D would sag off him to try to muck things up. No rebounding by the second unit. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-7 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 3 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 17 minutes. He was a -21. The Action: He missed a layup off a quick attack. He sank a deep wing three on an inbounds at the end of the quarter. He attacked and missed a layup. Great feed over the fronting D to LeBron for a layup. He airballed a three. He lost a pass under the hoop. Second Half: He was hit in transition and missed the running three at the buzzer with no call. He picked a pass from behind and took it for the layup. He drew an illegal screen foul to get a stop. He missed an open wing jumper with the D sagging off.

Stephenson -- -- I don’t think Luke was happy with how loose Lance was playing out there with the lead. He had a couple of turnovers, including a wild behind-the-back pass on the break. Defensively, again he got caught ball watching for a putback dunk. Those little things called possessions add up. You can’t give up second chances, you can cough up turnovers like we had been doing. So with an emphasis on rebounding and not turning the ball over, he did both. So Luke limited his minutes. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-2 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 10 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He swished a sideline three on some quick Laker ball movement in transition. No box out and he gave up a putback. He sank a turnaround jumper on iso, looked behind the backboard. Mustard off the hotdog on a behind-the-back, turnover on the break (layup the other way). He fumbled the ball away on iso. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- In the first half they ran three plays for him after timeouts. I’ve mentioned his need for structure offensively and glad to see them trying to give him some of that to get on track. He was much more useful to the team because of that. I suspect as the team adds more to the playbook, his game will improve bit by bit. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 2-5 shooting (0-1 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He missed a corner three on an inbounds. He sank a pull-up jumper off the handoff. Give-and-go layup off the set play out of a timeout. He was rejected on a dunk attempt, probably should have gone for the layup instead of cocking back for a dunk. He was fouled on a baseline cut, working off ball, he made both FTs. Second Half: He drew FTs on a scramble play, he made both. He swiped a ball, then threw it away (or never had control, it happened so fast). He made a tech. He missed a turnaround in the paint.

Williams -- -- Moe was activated for this game. Hard to say if/when he will get into the mix. I imagine they’re a bit worried about him understanding and orchestrating the D. The Stats: He didn’t shoot or score and had 2 boards, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 7 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Walton -- -- The Lakers led 8-0 to force a timeout. Getting out to a good start on both ends… Another timeout up 25-12… A 15-0 Laker run to lead by 17. McGee out for Williams with 4:21 left at this point… Lonzo, LeBron out for Hart and Rondo… Lance in for Ingram… KCP in for Kuzma, so Hart over at PF with Williams, Lakers up 14… The Lakers led 38-21 after the first quarter… The Lakers ran LeBron, Hart, Stephenson, KCP, Rondo. They were getting smoked… Lead trimmed down to 9, so Luke went back to the starters with Rondo instead of McGee… Trimmed to 4 on a 13-0 run and he called a timeout… McGee in for Rondo out of that… Up 7, KCP in for LBJ with a couple minutes left… Kuzma third foul… LeBron back in with a minute left for Hart’s third foul… They led 66-59 at the half. They shot 59% and made 7-11 from three… A couple threes by LeBron and the Lakers were up 12 and forced a timeout… Up 16, they forced another timeout as D led to breakaway score… KCP in for LeBron out of that… A 19-point lead was trimmed to 14 and Luke called timeout… Rondo in for Ball out of that… Lead down to 11 and LeBron returned… Williams, LeBron, Hart, KCP, Rondo lineup… The Lakers led 94-81 heading into the fourth… Williams, LeBron, Hart, KCP, Rondo lineup to start… Stephenson in for Hart up 11… Lakers out of fouls quickly… Williams out for McGee quickly. McGee with 4 fouls… The lead was cut to 8 and Luke called a timeout… Luke went back to all the starters out of that with nearly 9 minutes left… Lakers up 9 and BI sat for KCP with 6:33 left… Up 12 Ingram back in for KCP with under 4 minutes left… A 7-0 run and it was cut to 6 with 2 minutes left… A 17-4 Mavs run to close the game… “You have to be able to rely on your defense to win a game,” Luke said…

A win is a win. But still a LOT of work to do.
Our bench sucks.

Thanks DB. This team will have more growing pangs before they reach their potential.

PS - I hope JaVele is here next year and beyond. He's had the 2nd biggest impact behind LBJ out of all of our FA signings.

Thanks DB! Wow, Javale McGee. I never thought he'd be THIS good. 35 minutes tonight. At this stage he looks like our second best player. And that says a lot considering Lonzo's defense and court vision.

We got the win and nobody was injured. So it ends well. But we played better before the suspension in spite of the losses, and also better before Ingram/Rondo came back from suspension.

It looks an awful lot like we're better off with either Ingram or Kuzma in that second unit, rather than starting both and playing Hart as a power forward alongside Rondo, KCP, Lance, and an undersized Williams at center. How undersized can Luke take this before 'positionless basketball' starts looking stupid? Hart has completely disappeared in this setting, while Kuzma and Ingram bring some level of redundancy to the starting unit.

Thanks DB always a great read.

Seems like we have a few guys that are not playing well. Great to get a win even though we messed up down the stretch.

Thanks, DB! In 82 games, you take wins however they come early. A win in October is one less that you'll need in March.

Strange that everyone off the bench were all negatives and most of them were double digit negatives. Whichever PG off the bench, Rondo or Lonzo, needs to control his portion of the game better.

Late game execution on both ends of the floor is still a work in progress. Notice how, when the opponents need an open 3 late, they designate LBJ as the help defender, knowing that he will always help and leave his man open behind the arc? Vs SA in OT, Gay got an open 3; Vs Dal, Barnes got an open 3.

The offense late got bogged down into ISO ball. Maybe Luke is testing BI to see if he can be a closer.

Rondo and Lonzo together does not work period. BI not reliable and do not see him closing, that's what LeBron is there for. Walton needs to establish players roles, just like Phil used to do. Stop messing around with the lineups and put your foot down.

They did just enough to win this game

I disagree. They just barely did not manage to lose this one. Although, let's give them some credit, they tried real hard.

The bench has attitude problems. That's why they coughed up that lead in the first half. Glad Luke recognised it and benched Stephenson, who was leading in that department. Later on, Dallas was scoring at will over KCP. Those 9 pts are really deceptive. -10 tells way more of his impact. Surprised it was not more into the negative.

To me, he looks like our best player. Sure LBJ has more potential, but his body language and attitude..... Therefrom all those turnovers. What a waste of great talent.

Thanks for the analysis, as always, DB!

Must say, though, I disagree with your view of B.I.'s offensive game. I like him taking those mid-range shots. You have to be a complete offensive player, to be able to take advantage of the looks the defense gives you. Look to Durant as an example. You won't hear anyone complaining about the mid-range shots he takes. It opens up drives to the basket; or passing opportunities to rolling/diving teammates.

Of course, I want to see his 3-ball continue to improve, as well.

I'm worried.
I'm not worried about getting used to play with each other in the offence. The amount of talent is great and scoring will not be a problem.
But I'm very worried about lack of effort in the defensive end. There will hopefully be less of simple miscommunications just with getting used to, but there are so many things to fix in D... I'm worried.
