Coming up Short Again… As the Dodgers tormented fans in L.A. in game four of the World Series, the Lakers took to the court in San Antonio.

Not a good night for holding leads for either L.A. team. The Lakers played with brief double digit leads against the Spurs throughout the first three quarters, but heading into the fourth they led by just a point after a 10-0 run by the Spurs to close the quarter.

“I thought we got away from who we were halfway through the quarter,” Luke said. “We stopped pushing the ball. We got stagnant.”

The Lakers still scored 28 points in that quarter. They just gave up 33 with that poor close (we ran Hart at PF with Williams during that stretch).

In the fourth, the offense really slowed down. There was a near 6-minute stretch where the Lakers only scored 2 points. LeBron took a rest, the offense flatlined and after he returned we didn’t seem to get him reengaged until the final minutes when the Spurs had built a lead.

Down 8, LeBron scored a layup, manufactured a couple of FTs and hit Hart for a three to cut it 1. After a timeout and down 3, he hit Rondo with a pass under the hoop for a sure uncontested layup with a few seconds left. Rondo opted to pull it out instead of taking the sure 2. LeBron would miss a tough three a few seconds later. The Lakers eventually fell 110-106 when Hart missed a FT and the Spurs made theirs.

Once again, they had to play perfect in the final minute to try to comeback against the Spurs. Couldn’t do it this time.

LeBron -- -- LeBron passed Dirk for sixth on the all-time scoring list tonight. He had 13 points in the first half and throttled it up to drop 22 in the second half (9 in the fourth). Thought we should have gone to him a little more in the fourth. Luke called a timeout late in the quarter when we were down by 8 with over a minute left. LeBron got a couple of scores, but wish that would have happened a little sooner to give us a better chance. The jumper looked better tonight as he sank a couple of threes and several midrange. Good thing because the paint was packed at times. Our halfcourt offensive execution is still lost in Suckville quite a bit, so that will also make things tough on both him and the team. But he can manufacture something out of nothing quite a bit. I watched LeBron a lot last season (with all the buzz that he might end up in L.A.). Despite that, one thing I’ve really begun to appreciate about LeBron’s game this season is his ability to find teammates with the bounce pass. Whether it’s an extra pivot to create a better angle or the angle of the bounce itself, he’s really masterful in tight spaces. The Stats: He scored 35 points on 13-21 shooting (2-6 from three, 7-8 from the line) to go with 11 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He attacked and kicked to Kuzma for a three. He attacked off the rebound and hit the short baseline fade. He swished a step-back wing jumper. His bounce pass was picked off. He passed the ball off the glass to himself from the FT line and hit the layup. Nice bounce pass to McGee on the break for the layup. He probed and earned FTs, he made one. He spun off the horns high post, attacked and was fouled as he was about to cram with both hands, he made both FTs. He probed and lost the dribble. He swiped a pass. He iso’d and missed a three at the top of the arc. He got tapped on a wing three that circled out. He attacked in transition and drew FTs, he made both. He swiped a ball, pushed it up and scooped a lob to McGee for the dunk. He was called for an offensive fouled trying to seal a man in the paint. Uncontested dunk when Stephenson stole a ball in transition D and we tossed it down court to him. Second Half: He iso’d, spun baseline and powered in a layup. He pushed the ball up court and sank a wing pull-up jumper. He missed a pull-up at the top of the key. He attacked in the lane to his left and muscled in a lefty layup. He swished a face-up baseline jumper to pass Dirk. He swished a wing three behind a screen. He attacked down the paint (I think threw it off the board to himself) and scored the layup. He missed a jumper. He missed a floater. He popped out and sank a wing three. Short on a three when the offense stalled. He dunked when Rondo bounce to him cutting to the hoop. He attacked out of a timeout for a quick layup. He attacked in transition for FTs, he made both to cut it to 4 with a minute left. He missed a tough step-back three.

Ball -- -- A bit too quiet a night from Lonzo. The Spurs do a good job of sending defenders back to protect in transition and help slow the game down. That may have impacted Lonzo somewhat. They still could have pushed it more in their favor. “We got stagnant…that’s not to our benefit. We’ve usually got a lot of guards on the floor, we’re faster than everybody so when we stand around that doesn’t really help us.” I’d really like to see him as the defender against DeRozan in crunch time. He challenges shots better than Hart on those midrange shots. Offensively, he did sink a couple more threes. So that’s still trending well. He bricked his only two FTs tonight, though. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-8 shooting (2-5 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He missed a pull-up wing jumper in early offense. He attacked and kicked to Kuzma for a three. He missed an open corner three. He attacked down the lane and drew FTs, he missed both (nearly airballed the second). He no-looked a bounce pass right out of bounds. He sank a three off a swing pass. Second Half: He set up McGee for a jumper on the two-man sequence. He missed a corner three. He couldn’t connect with McGee on a long outlet. He missed a wing three next time down. He sank a wing three to start the fourth. Not close on another short bank (really needs to work on those).

Kuzma -- -- He sank a couple threes to get the Lakers scoring started tonight. Then made one of his next five attempts from three in the first half as he finished with 13 points (3-7 three shooting). There was a stint in the first half when we briefly went to Kuzma at the C spot again. I may watch that again, because we saw some poor ball again from him in that stretch. He rushed things offensively previously when he was in the C spot and it looked like he tried to do too much again during that stretch. The Spurs run Rudy Gay at PF and Kuzma had to deal with that at times. Gay led the Spurs with the +13. An occasional mistake on help D tonight. He didn’t get credit for a block in this game, but I thought he got a piece of a jumper on one help play in the paint on one play. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-14 shooting (3-8 from three) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist and 3 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He swished a wing three on the kickout from LeBron. He flashed to the ball and hit a wing three next time down. He trailed the break and missed the deep three. He missed a good look at a wing three on a kickout. He swished a wing three on the kickout from Lonzo. He scooped up a loose ball and hit the floater. He hammered down a dunk on the break when the D didn’t commit to him. He missed a sideline three in early offense. He forced up a wild one and bricked. He missed a three on an inbounds at the buzzer. Second Half: Matador help D to give up a layup. He was blocked on the other end. He hit Hart for a transition three (more passing like that, please). He iso’d, nearly traveled and hit the short turnaround. He missed an open three. Unnecessary double on Aldridge to get the D scrambled and give up a dunk. Should have spaced to the corner but didn’t give Rondo a passing lane and Rondo got swatted. He missed a layup in transition. He blocked a shot in the middle of the paint to help ignite a break.

McGee -- -- One of the rare games he didn’t get to double digits. Some of that may be related to us not pushing the pace as much as we have. JaVale actually should have had another bucket but he got cute on the break instead of cramming and missed a finger roll. We did a little better on Aldridge in this game, holding him to 15 points on 16 shots. We still gave up 12 offensive boards as a team. Hart, Ball and Kuzma probably could have all done better in that regard to help out. Some poor fouls on the offensive one in this game. He needs to be careful on those because we can’t afford to limit his availability. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-5 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 4 blocks, 5 turnovers and 4 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +/- of 0. The Action: He traveled on the first possession as the play busted. He tried to get cute on the break and missed the finger roll (dunk that). He blocked a shot in the paint, then scored a layup on the subsequent break. He erased a drive on help D. Illegal screen, turnover. Called for a goaltend in the post, that was close. Bad foul on the offensive glass on one that was already secured. Good hustle to help regain an offensive board. He sealed a man on a rim run off a made hoop, took the pass and dunked. Great job changing ends and LeBron lobbed to him on the break for the throwdown. Second Half: He drew FTs in transition after a made basket, he made one. He sank a FT jumper on the two-man game. He blocked a jumper from behind on help D. Another offensive board foul (his fourth). He threw a pass in the backcourt, turnover. He stepped on the baseline on the drive and dish from Kuzma, uggh, big turnover with 1:53 left.

Hart -- -- A bit of a poor game from Hart. He did come up big in the final minute with a three as well as an offensive board on a great effort. Defensively, not as much resistance as we need. Tough to cover DeRozan, but he did a decent job making him tougher shots on occasion. He didn’t bite on fakes. Still gave up big numbers. The ones the drive me a little nuts at times are when he gives up the easy blow by drives. So with Ingram coming back, we assume that Luke will sit Kuzma, but it seems like there’s an outside chance he could send Hart to the bench. In that case, you’d probably use Lonzo and Kuzma coming off screens as shooters on occasion and defensively, Ingram would take the 2. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-10 shooting (2-6 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 36 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He swiped an inbounds and took it the distance for the dunk. He hit the side of the board on a tough three of the inbounds (feet weren’t set well). DeRozan blew past him for a dunk. Second Half: He missed a wing three after side-stepping to lose a closeout. He swished the easier catch-and-shoot three in transition from the other wing next time down. He missed a tough turnaround trying to create against the shotclock. He attacked and charged. He was called for a travel off the three line. He missed a pull-up at the elbow. He took his eye off a pass, turnover. Bad angle on Gay and he gave up a dunk. He attacked in transition and was blocked. He airballed a forced corner three next time down. Great effort to get fouled on an offensive board with 3.5 seconds left, he made one FT.

Rondo -- -- With 15 seconds left, we called a timeout. LeBron found him for a wide open layup off a quick strike, but Rondo decided to pull it out instead of take the two. There was plenty of time to take the layup and foul. Brain cramp. Luke talked to him about it but didn’t throw him under the bus after the game. “He knows what he’s doing out there. I trust his opinion,” Luke said. Luke kept the starters with Lonzo at point and had Rondo come off the bench to start the game. In the last game to close, we had Stephenson out there to close in the small ball. This closing lineup had Rondo. Neither will likely be there when Ingram comes back and I think we’ll be better defensively because of it. Rondo had some ballwatching sequences in this one. Good shooting game from him as he knocked down a couple threes and hit an elbow jumper. Yet to get his first W. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-8 shooting (2-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 5 assists, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He swished a sideline three off the cross-court feed from Lance. He hit a floater on a probe off a screen. He hit Stephenson for a three on a kickout at the buzzer. He sank a pull-up elbow jumper, wide open. He missed a wing three. He hit McGee on the rim run for a dunk. He missed a wing three behind a screen. He knocked a ball loose in the backcourt. Second Half: Good help on Aldridge to knock a rebound away. He attacked to his left and drew a blocking foul for FTs, he made both. The D went under the screen so he drained the wing three. Bounce pass to Williams in the paint for the layup. Wild kickout, turnover. He looked fouled on a reverse with no call. He allowed his man into the lane for a layup while ballwatching. He attacked and was rejected. Nice bounce pass to a cutting LeBron for the dunk. He didn’t go for the layup right under the hoop and pulled it out, what?

Stephenson -- -- He had 12 point on 5-10 shooting and 7 boards in the first half. Much quieter second half. When the offense sputtered to close the third quarter, Luke pulled him for Svi to start the fourth. Then brought him back to go with a more vet lineup for a stretch. With Rondo back and playing on the second unit, it seemed a little clunky at times. I’ll give the Spurs some credit for that, but the Lakers halfcourt action has a long way to go. He led the bench in scoring and we played even with Lance on the floor. I assume the minutes will drop back now with both Ingram and Rondo back. We’ll see. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-12 shooting (2-3 from three) to go with 9 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He iso’d and sank a step-back wing jumper. He lost the dribble off his foot. He swished a wing three off the save by KCP. He iso’d and hit Rondo cross court for a three. He attacked, bullied past his man, palmed it and powered in a layup. He picked up a double tech with someone else apparently. Tough attempt from three off a high kickout, he missed. Off a kickout, he ball-faked, jab stepped and hit the sideline three at the buzzer. He sank a wing jumper. He iso’d missed and missed the tip. He pounced on a pass in transition to knock it loose and get a stop. He let a man blow past him for a layup. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. Second Half: He couldn’t finish a drive. He missed a forced 18-footer. He iso’d and hit the pull-up wing jumper.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Sheesh. He’s certainly had little positive impact this season. Just 2 points on 1-2 shooting. His make was a baseline pull-up. His miss was a force. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 block and 1 foul in 16 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He fumbled a pass on the cut, but recovered and hit Lance for the three. He swished a baseline pull-up jumper. Second Half: Off-balance wing pull-up just chucking even if the shot wasn’t there for him and he missed. He stripped a man on the defensive glass to help get the stop.

Williams -- -- Got to work on those freethrows. They just look awful. He missed both tonight. Lakers as a team shot a poor 11-18 from the line. On the road that’s especially painful. Some good moments on the offensive glass. Always love that hustle. One of those led to a Lonzo three. He scored both his points at the rim, one a reverse, the other a layup off a nice pocket pass from Rondo as they ran the two-man game. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards (2 offensive), 1 assist, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: Good challenge to force Aldridge into an airball. He swiped the ball in the post off a double team. He called his own number and missed a driving lefty hook. He got caught in the air and gave up a layup. He reversed after getting stuck under the hoop. He was fouled in the post, he missed both FTs. He pulled down an offensive board and it led to a Lonzo three. Second Half: He scored a layup off the pocket pass from Rondo. He pulled down an offensive board and was blocked on the putback attempt.

Mykhailiuk -- -- He came in to start the fourth quarter as our offense sputtered at the end of the third with Stephenson out there. Brief stint and he missed a three before Luke went back to Lance. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting in 2 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He let a man fly by and missed the wing three.

Walton -- -- He put Rondo on the bench with Lonzo starting… Rondo in for Hart, Williams for McGee, Lakers up 4 midway through the quarter… Stephenson in for Lonzo, Lakers up 3 a minute later… LeBron and Kuzma out for KCP and Hart, Lakers up 2 with 4 minutes left. So that’s Williams, Hart at PF, Stephenson, KCP, Rondo… McGee in up 3 with 3 left… Williams back in after a 10-point lead was trimmed to 4… The Lakers led 36-29 after the first quarter… He started Williams, LeBron, Stephenson, KCP and Rondo… McGee in after a few for Williams… Up 11, all starters back in except Lonzo with Rondo still out there with 8 minutes left… They extended to a 13-point lead, drawing a timeout after a series of transition scores… Lonzo in for LeBron out of that… McGee picked up his third foul (offensive again) and had to sit with 7 minutes left up 13… Up 11, Luke called a timeout as the offense sputtered… He brought Rondo back in… Kuzma (at the C), LeBron, Hart, Stephenson, Lonzo (not a good stretch for Lonzo)… Williams in for Kuzma up 7… Kuz back in for offense on the final possession… The Lakers led 60-54 at the half. The Lakers won the break 14-2. They went 7-19 from three, the Spurs 1-7… Timeout as the lead was trimmed to 2… Timeout Spurs, Lakers up 4. Luke sat Lonzo, McGee and LeBron for Stephenson, Rondo and Williams… KCP in for Hart, Lakers up 8… Hart in at PF for Kuzma… This unit having troubles… The Lakers led 88-87 heading into the fourth… He started a McGee, LeBron, Svi, KCP, Ball lineup. Luke sitting Stephenson/Rondo and putting some shooters out there… Down 2, he brought back in Stephenson and Rondo. Okay… Spurs packing the paint now… Down 2, Hart back in for KCP… Kuzma in for LeBron, Williams in for McGee, down 1… Lakers down 4 with 5 minutes left when he went to the small ball with LeBron against Aldridge at C… Timeout Spurs, Lakers down 4. Luke brought in McGee for Lonzo out of that… Lakers missed a series of shots (no LeBron on those) and they fell back by 8 and Luke called a timeout… Small ball with LeBron on Aldridge. He scored twice and hit Hart for a three to cut it to 1 with 35 seconds left… Down 3 with 15.9, timeout… Rondo passed up a point-blank layup to try to bring it back out to setup a three. Uggh… Hart missed a FT. Pau made both his. That ended any chance…

If I am the Rams, I am conducting some kind of holy ceremony tonight.

Bad JuJu this weekend in the City of Angels.

Clay Helton probably cost himself his job.

Dave Roberts also if there is any justice in this world.

Don't even get me started on the L.A. Kings.

The Lakers blowing a lead to a mediocre *purs team is par for the course this weekend it seems.

I think your thread DB is the only one I’ll visit after a loss... Between the “ fire Luke “ crew, the “trade everybody” crew and the “LeBron is not a winner” crew, this forum is unbearable after we lose. Thanks for the recap man...

Thanks. I’m definitely disappointed in the level of emotional knee jerk posts going on by some right now. Just some really poor quality takes tonight by a few. We will keep an eye on it and make some changes.

And you'd think I'd be the one with the knee jerks.

Thanks DB, great summary as always! It especially helps in times like these when I don't get to see it live. I'm really disappointed that we didn't get the win after building up that lead in the 3rd.

Thanks DB! As you mentioned, you have to credit the Spurs for being able to slow the pace down. They also utilized their length against us in the half court.

The Lakers are a work in progress at this early point. At some point we will see them gel as a team with everyone healthy, consistent rotations after understanding which players work best as 5 man units, and being able to figure out when and how to back up McGee at center.

Thanks again DB.
Luke's line-ups can be whack at times; Hart at PF with Williams at center "aint gonna get it" in this league.

Lost to a pretty good team, DeRozan and LMA are balling (Pop integrating new players seamlessly is impressive)

Respectfully disagree with DB and Luke. The main issue was not that the Lakers stopped pushing but was that we failed to get stops on the defensive end. Stops lead to more fast break opportunities and better pace for the Lakers. DeRozen score 4 times and had two assists in the fourth quarter alone. Anytime we scored he would answer with a score of his own. Can't win that way.

Derozan would instantly turn back into Defrozan if we were playing him in a playoff series. Could have used BI's length on him tonight though.

It seems like we were in every single game that we lost (even had double digit leads at some point for pretty much all of them), which is at the same time maddening and encouraging.

Not sure if it came through but I disagreed with Luke’s assessment of when/where the problem happened. We had plenty of O in the third. Last 2 min was bad D. But we did have an offensive slow down in the fourth for about 6 minutes where the D gave up a normal amount of points during that stretch but we only scratched out 2 points.

Regarding DeRozan, that’s where I’d like to see Lonzo tested more as a stopper as I mentioned. Hart gives a good effort but sometimes you we need to switch things up to get some disruption.

I'm not sweating the first 20 games or so. We've been trying to integrate new players and schemes, figure out minutes and rotations, deal with suspensions and playing a tough opening schedule. We've been "in" every game with an opportunity to win. I agree that we need to figure out defense first because we'll score points.

Lakers better come out ready to play tomorrow against Minny, looking at a dysfunctional team being favored over us is very pathetic.

Thanks for the clarification DB!
