A couple weeks away from another college basketball season beginning. It should be interesting with so many top teams simultaneously being mentioned in the ongoing FBI college basketball scandal.

#1 Kansas to hold out Silvio De Sousa to review his eligibility

Quote:
Kansas officials announced early Wednesday what has long been expected -- specifically that sophomore Silvio De Sousa will be withheld from competition pending an eligibility review.

"Information was presented during the current trial in New York -- some of which we knew, some of which we didn't," said Kansas coach Bill Self. "We have decided to withhold Silvio from competition until we can evaluate and understand the new information. We have already discussed trial developments with the NCAA and will continue to work with NCAA staff moving forward."

There are a couple other threads about this, but the trial resulted in convictions.

I was all for this when it initially became a story.....but after watching it play out, I can't help but feel like the FBI did little to actually clean up the sport, and made scapegoats out of a few people.....while going out of their way to not look into any big names in big programs.

These guys were found guilty of defrauding the Universities! Huh? The case actually made the schools and programs the victims!!! This quote pisses me off....

Quote:
Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward Diskant told the jury that even if the coaches were complicit in the scheme, that doesn't excuse the defendants.

How were the programs and universities defrauded if the "coaches were complicit in the scheme"? The trial made it clear that guys like Bill Self (Kansas) and Sean Miller (Arizona) run extremely dirty programs....and there was even suggestion that Duke, UNC and Kentucky are very similar. It will make me sick if the Final 4 next year is Kansas, Duke, UNC and Kentucky.

Honestly, if I was a school like West Virginia.....after watching the trial play out, I would call Puma or New Balance tomorrow and say make us a "flagship" school, and we will leave Nike.....if you will drop bags of cash for us like Nike does for Duke and Kentucky....and Adidas does for Kansas and Arizona.

I don’t want to get into legal minutiae, but this is just the first trial. Some assistant coaches are still facing charges. The head coaches probably will not get charged because the cases would be hard to win for the reasons you state. The government will leave them to the NCAA. (So yes, the schools will end up as victims.)

Criminal law is a poor tool for cleaning up college sports, but (as with FIFA) you have to start somewhere. Anyone who wants to pay money to a player now needs to worry about the FBI. That is not a small matter.

You are correct....but from a layman legal mind's perspective....just feels wrong these 3 guys are going to prison. They paid money to athletes, which is not a crime in itself. It is clear some of their supervisors at their employers knew they were paying the athletes, and were doing it at the instruction of employees of the universities. They knew they were breaking NCAA rules, but likely had no idea they were breaking Federal Laws....and I have heard and read many competent lawyers even argue that they did not break federal laws. Yet, they are definitely going to prison for real time behind bars.

In other news, rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine was given probation today after pleading guilty to using of a child (13 year old female) in a sexual performance. How is society better off with him on the streets, but must put these low to mid level middlemen behind bars? No need to answer, it was rhetorical.

Watched a charity exhibition game this weekend between #13 WVU and Penn State. Penn State actually won on a tip in basket as time expired. That did not really concern me because our starting PG was out, and Konate was on limited minutes. Still, I am very concerned about WVU this season.....without Carter and Miles in the backcourt, everything just looked discombobulated. The full court press was a joke, and half court perimeter defense was almost as bad. Konate and Esa Ahmed looked good at times, but if things do not drastically improve, WVU is likely overrated @ #13 based on that exhibition performance.

Man, this Duke team. If they play like this all season long, they are going all the way.

Barrett and Zion are NBA-ready. Can't say the same for Reddish yet. But I can definitely see his potential.

Screw the games. The real season is starting now:

Quote:
Yahoo Sports reported Tuesday that the FBI has given the NCAA the OK to begin investigating some of the programs that have been mentioned during the recent cases on corruption and bribes in college basketball recruiting. Among the programs mentioned during the first trial were Louisville, Kansas and NC State.

https://sports.yahoo.com/report-ncaa-given-ok-investigate-043451256.html

I expect that Kansas is truly #1 in this ranking.

Not joking. Played 4 most of the game yesterday. I prefer he doesn't roll out to shooters if he doesn't need to. Put him at 4 and you take away his quickness advantage off the dribble. He has the strength to handle 5s and deny position.

I, as a fan of a team not named Duke, really hope they can't sustain the level they played at last night....if so, there may not be many questions left to answer about this season. That was Kentucky....Big Blue....speculation about the best team Cal has fielded in years....and Duke treated them like a scrub team waiting for court time.

Zion kind of reminds me of a super athletic Julius Randle.

Terror on the break, shows flashes of really good vision, and can get in the paint at will against forwards and bully smaller guards in the post. The main difference is that Zion can simply jump over everyone once he gets to the basket rather than have to throw up those patented Julius flip shots.

this was my my immediate thoughts after watching Duke... shut Lebron down at all star break if we are at this same record pace and tank for a high draft pick, even if only to use as a trade piece for more win-now talent.
