West Coast bias! I always thought Berkeley was the premier UC school/campus.
It is really hard to take a list serious that ranks WVU #377.....do they not know that Will Grier is our quarterback? |

What about Virginia? That's pretty close to West Virginia. _________________ Under New Management |

you would be shocked at how many people I have told I am from West Virginia, and their response is something like "I love Charlottesville, it is so nice...." or "are you from near Roanoke...." like they have no idea this whole secession took place in 1861 or there was a Civil War. |

I really hope new students aren't putting too much weight into these rankings when a wopping 22.5% is based off reputation. Follow the metrics strictly. If that reputation means a higher median salary then proportionately shift that weight to that stat. If it shows a greater likelihood to be hired then redistribute part of the reputation ranking to that. _________________ "It was tough," Kobe Bryant said. I’ve heard that 40% of WVU graduates go on to pass their GED exam... _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” ― Elie Wiesel |

I'm not a fan of these sorts of rankings, but I guess they are better than nothing. Just for the heck of it, I tried to figure out the methodology used by these rankings. At best, it was pretty vague.
One thing that jumped out from the rankings is that the public/private distinction is largely irrelevant when it comes to cost. Private schools do tend to be more expensive, but the gap is nothing like what it used to be. For example, UCLA (ranked 25) costs $37k per year. My alma mater, Rice (ranked 14), costs $42k. Princeton (ranked 9) costs $43k. That isn't a trivial difference, but it used to be a much larger gap. |

The schools try to figure them out too. They get some of the information, but obviously the ranking agencies try not to provide enough information to allow schools to game the system. There's also some back-engineering that can be done from year-to-year results as changing conditions at schools can be correlated to changes in the rankings.

With publics, in-state tuition provides a significant discount. Here at UCI, out-ot-state tuition (non-resident netpayers) is about $38K, while for residents it's about $13K. |

Back when dinosaurs walked the earth, I contemplated going to law school at Berkeley and establishing California residence for my second and third years. Even back then, the difference in cost was enormous. In the end, I decided that I didn’t want to play the student loan game, so I turned down both Berkeley and Stanford. Tuition at Texas was $56 per semester for residents, or $4 per semester hour. How times have changed. |

reading through the posts.....is the $37K listed for UCLA for in-state residents or out of state students? I assumed it was the in state cost, and was kind of shocked at the high cost. |

Eh . . . nice for UCLA. But I'll take UCSB and the awesome location all day any day.
