Self-Inflicted Wounds… The Lakers had 23 turnovers and went an awful 10-21 from the line. Those miscues and misses ultimately did them in against the Warriors.

The Lakers trailed 20-13 after the first quarter after giving up an 8-0 run when the L.A. bench came in. They trailed by 6 at the half as the turnovers piled up (11 first-half turnovers).

They lost the game, however, to start the second half.

Opening the half with back-to-back turnovers, they called a quick timeout. Out of that timeout? Another turnover. They were quickly down 17 when Simon made a wholesale change of the starters, and they were chasing the Warriors the rest of the way.

They trimmed it back to 10 on a 10-3 run to end the third quarter, but were never able to reel them in, losing 77-71.

Up next, Vegas.

Wagner -- -- His best two-way game of the summer league so far. Defensively, he showed some excellent lateral speed a number of times to cut off or recover on his man and force him to give the ball up. He drew one charge (should have been two, but didn’t get the call). He also got in on a number of challenges to block a few shots. The strength issues got the best of him again on defensive board on a missed FT that we gave up where he got walked under the hoop, but for the most part it wasn’t as much a factor in this one. He was active on the defensive glass (13 boards in the game), which you want to see more of. The conditioning there looked good (he even hustled back in transition to secure a defensive board). “That’s why I’m trying to establish here is to feel more comfortable defensively. Be solid there and all the rest I’m not worried about,” he said. Offensively, we saw the range from three and also a nice post turnaround. His post game definitely suffers from a lack of strength right now as he doesn’t move anybody and that gets him into a little trouble. He also needs to be more aware of help defenders. Transition-wise, he leaked out for a dunk. He pushed out the break a number of times, and he even tried to take it coast to coast and Euro-step around a defender for a score. Glad we finally got to see some of that because he has it in his game (and, of course, we push pace as a team). What I like about him over some of the other guys like Lakers might have picked is just how versatile that offensive game is for a big. There’s a lot to it, but it needs a lot of polish, reps and work on his body to help bring it all out. Definitely on him and his work ethic with how that will go. I’m not concerned about the turnovers from him. These Sac games are like summer league preseason. It will be sloppy. Most of his scoring today was in the first half where he had 12 points on 5-8 shooting to go with 7 boards and 2 blocks. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-10 shooting (2-4 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 13 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 4 blocks, 4 turnovers and 5 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He threw a bounce pass away expecting a cut that didn’t happen. He swished a three on a pick and pop. He stepped around the post to swipe the entry pass, pushed out the dribble and no looked to Svi for the layup. He gave up an offensive board on a freethrow miss getting walked under the hoop. He missed a short one in the post (should have gone glass). He missed a three straight away. He smothered his man and forced a brick. He grabbed a loose ball and scored a layup. He pushed up a board but couldn’t finish off the Euro step (still impressive). He leaked out and dunked on the outlet. He blocked a reverse layup on help D. He went for a steal in the post, missed, recovered and blocked the shot from behind. Nice job cutting off baseline, but he fouled challenging the fade (still that was a good recovery on the second move, too). He tried to iso and fumbled the ball away. Great job getting back on D off that turnover to get the board. He took a charge on a rotation (more please). He drained a pick and pop three with a man on, very nice. He swished a turnaround fade on the baseline. Second Half: He tried to create in the post and was stripped for a dunk the other way. He bit on an upfake and gave up a layup. He missed an open 20-footer from the wing. He missed a wing three. He blocked a three with the shotclock low. He was fouled on a throwdown attempt (probably should have finished), he made one FT. Great job with the lateral speed recovering in front of his man after an upfake and he got shoved to the ground with no call (should have gotten the charge). He attacked the paint and ran into a crowd for a travel, erasing the runner. More good work with the lateral speed to cut his man off a couple of times, but he fouled on the pass off. He forced his man into a tough pass, then recovered on help D to block a dunk at the rim. He grabbed a defensive board and pushed it up to ignite the break.

Mykhailiuk -- -- Not a great game from Svi. He still showed the flashes with a deep three off the catch and getting out in transition for scores. He’s really going to rely on the system and plays clicking for him to have big games. It was not today. On the other end of the floor, he gets up high for defensive boards. Which is great to see. I also like see the hustle in transition, not just on offensive but getting back with speed at times, as well. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-10 shooting (1-5 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 25 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He missed a three straight away. He attacked left and missed a layup. He was blocked in transition. He got out in transition with speed and took the pass from Moe for the layup. He was called for a travel (looked bogus). He sank a deep three in early offense, catching the ball behind the double screens up top and firing. Nice challenge in transition one way, then he scored a layup in transition the other way. He missed a step-back corner jumper. Second Half: He missed a layup around a man, got it back and missed a three. He charged on a drive. He was called for a travel attacking off the three line. He missed a step-back 16-footer.

Caruso -- -- Pretty awful game from AC as he had more than a third of the Lakers turnovers. So 8 turnovers and just 3 assists. Yuck. He was spraying the passes all over or getting into trouble off the dribble. He was outplayed by Rathan-Mayes. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 2-6 shooting (0-1 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 8 turnovers and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He curled into the paint and hit a runner across his body. He hit Moe for a three on the pick and pop. He took contact in the paint and missed with no call. He missed a pull-up jumper on iso (Wagner should have popped instead of roll). He lost the ball trying to snake off the high screen, score the other way. He attacked the paint and drew FTs, he made one. He drew FTs attacking off an early screen, he made both. He threw a pass out of bounds and wanted the foul. He spun and scored a layup against a big. He missed a pull-up three. He fell and coughed up the ball. Second Half: His post entry pass was stolen. He threw a kickout away out of a timeout. Another turnover on a post entry that was deflected. He tried to attack a big and was blocked on the reverse unable to get separation. He threw a pass out of bounds trying to ignite the break.

Holland -- -- Very quiet night from him. The starters were awful at times, so that didn’t help, either. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 1 board, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 10 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He missed a layup on a drive left. Second Half: He telegraphed a pass, turnover.

Williams -- -- He had good length and ups on the glass. That’s been a continued theme for him. He didn’t score or look terribly comfortable out there on offense, so they limited his action despite getting the start. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting to go with 6 boards (3 offensive), 1 block, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He kept an offensive board alive. He lost track of his man and gave up a putback. Offensive board to reset the offense. He lost the ball against a double team. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Rathan-Mayes -- -- “It was a good tune up for us for Vegas,” Xavier said. He’s looking like he’s getting tuned up. He did a good job taking care of the ball while leading the team with 8 assists. He’s always aggressive out there. Occasionally, that gets him into trouble but as the team gets more familiar with each other those decisions will continue to improve. He said learning from Conley in Memphis last year helped him to focus on being aggressive while setting guys up. He found a pretty good balance in this one. More games like this might get him a camp invite. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 4-9 shooting (2-3 from three, 4-7 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 8 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: Out of control on a drive and he nearly threw it away. He missed a runner across the lane. Poor read on a skip pass, nearly a turnover again. He was called for an offensive foul in the post. He fumbled a pass out of bounds. He iso’d and was blocked on the drive. He sank a corner three of a kickout. He knocked a ball loose on the other end, then missed a three in transition. He sank a pull-up 17-footer off the high screen. He fired a hit ahead to Wagner for the dunk. Second Half: He sank a wing three when the D sagged off. He attacked a crowd and was smothered. He crossed over in transition and scored an And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He attacked the paint to his left, elevated and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a pull-pack fade on iso. He hit King on a skip pass for a three. He crossed over and was fouled on the layup attempt, he made one FT. Nice help to poke a ball away on a player curling into the middle. He zipped a pass to King down the lane for a dunk. He attacked, spun and drew FTs, he made one.

Ayres -- -- Big body setting hard picks and batting on the glass. He kept a number of freethrow misses alive just imposing his strength and effort on those. (Would have been nice had we not missed so many FTs.) He had more impact than the box score shows just with that activity and doing little things. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-4 shooting to go with 4 boards (1 offensive), 1 assist, 1 block and 1 foul in 9 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He missed an 18-footer. He rejected a shot in the paint. Second Half: He faked a handoff, attacked and bricked the finish. He missed a putback off a FT miss but kept the possession alive. Nearly kept another FT miss alive. He kept another FT miss alive, chasing it with a Warrior all the way to the sideline, great effort. Short on a hook across the lane.

King -- -- We got the King on our summer league squad to! Good game by this King with 13 points, hitting a couple of threes and finishing around the rim (except for one horrible choke). He couldn’t know down his FTs despite his smooth looking stroke from three. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-9 shooting (2-3 from three, 1-5 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He was blocked in the paint. He missed an open three. Second Half: He faced up, attacked, spun and was blocked. He attacked a crowd and was lucky to draw the blocking foul (looked like a charge), he missed both FTs. He attacked from the high post to his left and drew FTs, he made one. He sank a sideline three on a skip pass. He attacked a seam in transition and scored a layup. He choked a point blank layup when his man gambled for a steal and came up empty (worst Laker miss of the game). He dunked on a roll down the lane. He swished a corner three on a kickout. He scored an And-1 at the rim off a feed under the hoop.

Carrol -- -- He led the team with the +13 bringing good energy and sinking a couple of threes, as well. He also had a big throw down on a drive down the lane. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-8 shooting (2-5 from three, 1-3 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 23 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He rode in an And-1 layup on the break, he missed the FT. Nice attempt on a running heave from about 40 that back-rimmed at the buzzer. Second Half: He sank a wing three. He missed on his next attempt a possession later. He attacked the paint, exploded and threw down. He was fouled on a pushout after battling for a board, he made one FT. He pushed out a rebound and threw a pass right to a defender, turnover, three the other way. He forced up a post shot against a big and was promptly swatted. He rattled in a wing three on a kickout. He missed a wing three.

Branch -- -- He finished around the rim for his points. Not a lot of notes. Seems like he might be out of the rotation once our other guards get healthy. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-4 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 turnover and no fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He scored a layup on a cut out of a timeout. He attacked in transition and banked in the runner. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He crossed over and weaved through the D for a layup.

First?

Edit: Good to hear Wagner looked better on the defensive end. His recognition and timing of when to leave his man to help was poor in the first two games, and is something practice/game/film time should be able to help with.

Thanks DB

Mo is the real deal but he needs time in the gym to work on that body.

SVI not so good today but you can see that he has some hops. While he wasn't hitting today he is not afraid to step up and take a shot. Kinda like Kuz in that regard.

Why did we sign a 2 way contract with a guy who can’t even get minutes in summer league?

Of course he'd get minutes. He hurt a foot in practice and is being held out a few days to recover.

He missed an open three. Second Half: He faced up, attacked, spun and was blocked. He attacked a crowd and was lucky to draw the blocking foul (looked like a charge), he missed both FTs. Good job man!!!

Hey why don't you start a college basket ball scouting page with summaries like this. Let say if i am a scout and going to watch a video, reading a summary like this before will help me know what to look out for.

You do an amazing job with these.

DB, from what you have seen of Wagner so far, do you feel he can be a rotation player for the Lakers this season?

I would say no based on what I have seen, but you are obviously seeing it all and I would be interested in your opinion.

Not sure how our roster nets out and if we play Deng. Right now it would seem likely he’s in the mix in some fashion. If we had last year’s roster, then no.
