This trade makes too much sense and those of you that say “Melo sucks”
don’t get how the cap works. The Thunder save $50 million in luxury taxes and the Lakers get an expiring contract that comes off the books next year (so more money to play with in free agency).
By the way, I bet you Melo would be a lot better next to Lebron than Russ. |

I don’t think either of those sites are currently taking into account that the Lakers are currently $5 mill under the cap, so the salaries don’t have to match perfectly. Otherwise it would fail. |

Doesn't work now that we've signed Rondo. We'd have to include a mid tier salary - Ingram or Lonzo. |

The first round pick is probably why news leaked that the kings are possibly in the game.
Lakers were probably telling OKC that they would do a Deng for melo plus OKC first in order to save them $50m in taxes. Then OKC said no you have to be the ones giving up the pick or else we'll trade him to Sacramento. That's why article came out today that Sacramento is willing to use it's $19m in cap to acquire a veteran small forward who oy has one year left in exchange for a first.
So OKC is saying give us picks for Deng or else we trade him to Sacramento |

Ok, I could warm up to the idea since I know the benefits to both teams.
Are there any reports of interest on both sides? Or is this just someone's made up idea? |

NO WAY IN HELL DO WE GIVE UP A FIRST ROUND PICK & GET MELO BACK!
If we give up a 1st, it's to clear the cap space THIS YEAR, not after the season.
Oh, and eff OKC. _________________ On Lakersground, a concern troll is someone who is a fan of another team, but pretends to be a Lakers fan with "concerns". |

It can't work under the cap. So the latter. |

Way to many illogical people in this thread. That trade makes perfect sense for us! We are currently discussing trading Deng and it costing us two first round picks. Some are discussing a pick and Hart. The first option I would jump at whereas including Hart is a big no!
The proposed idea by the OP is better than either of those other offers. We lose only one late round pick to get out of Deng!
I would leap at that deal! _________________ Don't make me give you a trout slap! |

If the article suggests that OKC would get Deng & then deal Deng and the Lakers pick to ATL, why wouldn't we just ship Deng and the pick directly to ATL for a top 55 protected 2nd and avoid Melo altogether? _________________ On Lakersground, a concern troll is someone who is a fan of another team, but pretends to be a Lakers fan with "concerns". |

Explain to me how it saves OKC 50 million. If that’s true, it’s an easy nobrainer for both sides. _________________ A creative scorer, a wing defender, and a shooter. |

Why should the Lakers give up the pick when OKC benefits from the trad somewhat equally. _________________ A creative scorer, a wing defender, and a shooter. |

OKC gets a pick in exchange for punting their cap space a year down the road. The Lakers get out of their financial commitment at the end of the season. |

Otherwise no, let OKC waive Melo instead. | Exactly this. They have 100 million reasons to unload Melo, incentive enough for them to give up the first round pick. At worst, we do the swap with no picks exchanged.
Either way, I don't think its possible since we don't have enough cap space to absorb the remainder of his contract due to our other offseason signings. |

And only if Melo gets nowhere near the Lakers team. I strongly believe he can easily ruin a locker room. Which Deng didn't and I really respect him for that. |

Lakers shouldn't have to give up any draft assets when it's the thunder that's facing a huge tax liability and subsequent cap space restrictions even by waiving Melo. If anything, they should be giving the Lakers an asset in return for taking on Melo even for one season since Deng makes less next season compared to Melo and can be stretched longer, thereby lessening the financial blow. Why should the Lakers do okc any favors here unless they get something of immediate value in return? |
