The Missing… No Ingram, no Ball, no IT… The Lakers added Kuzma to the list of their talent on the sidelines. They might as well have thrown Brook Lopez in that list, too, as he went scoreless on 0-10 shooting.

Right out of the gates the Lakers put themselves in a hole, trailing by as many as 15 points early in the first quarter. They were giving up easy looks or layups, while missing their layup attempts on the other end.

They spent the remainder of the game trying to dig out of that hole, but never able to get over the hump. The Lakers fell 112-97 to the visiting Jazz

Rookie Josh Hart led the Lakers in scoring with 25 points as he took over Kuzma’s spot at starting SF, who of course took over for Ingram. They are stumbling to the finish line, but the young kids have shown a bright future.

Randle -- -- With Gobert in foul trouble, he had a little more room to attack in the first half, scoring 13 points of his 17 points. Good job again, getting to the line and making his FTs. He was probably at that usual 20-10 pace, we’ve been getting, but Luke gave run to the backup bigs in the fourth. Actually, he should have had 20 but blew a couple of layups to start the game. He’s been looking a bit run down to close the season, but he’s still able to produce. Hopefully, he has another good offseason of conditioning (we resign him) and he’s able to carry the strong motor into the postseason. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-12 shooting (5-5 from the line) to go with 7 boards (3 offensive), 4 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He choked a layup that should have been a dunk. He attacked and blew another layup. He was picked from blindside. He posted up and drew FTs, he made both. He chased down an offensive board, backed his man down, then hit Hart cutting for a layup. He scooped up a loose ball, pushed it up, spun and powered in a layup. He missed a three trailing the break. He steamrolled Gobert for an And-1 layup off the two-man game, he made the FT. He changed directions on a crossover and scored the layup to his left. He missed a layup and was fouled on the offensive board. He was stripped in the lane. He stripped a man on a drive to get a stop. He crossed over, attacked hard to his left and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked the paint, spun middle and hit the jumphook. Second Half: He curled into the lane to his left, took the pass and scored the layup. He attacked middle and hit Caruso for the delayed reverse. He cleaned up a missed KCP dunk. He spun, lost it and went to the floor for the tie up, he won the jumpball.

Lopez -- -- The Lakers needed their vet to step up. Instead, he took 10 shots and got nothing out of them. Gobert challenges him in the post, so Lopez gets off balance or into fades. From three, he was just off. It might have helped if we could have worked more effective two-man sequences for him or got some switches against smaller defenders. Luke kept the minutes low as a result. Gobert only had 4 points as the Lakers were helping well on the rolls to the hoop, but that left others open on the perimeter as the D collapsed. So even though Gobert only scored 4 points, his rolling to the hoop collapsed the D. And on defense, of course, Gobert was a concern. Large difference in impact between the two, but the box score doesn’t show that. The Stats: He scored The Action: He missed a wing three. He airballed a wing jumper trying to beat the shotclock. He missed a reverse attempt instead of going hard to the rim. He fumbled a dribble away, turnover. He choked a 3-footer. He up-faked and got Gobert’s third foul as he was tripped. He hit Hart cutting for a dunk. He was blocked in the post. He tipped out a FT miss. He bricked a pull-up three trying to beat the shotclock on an inbounds pass. Second Half: He missed a turnaround fade in the post. He let a guard blow past him easily for a layup. Way short on a wing three. He got walked under the hoop on the glass and gave up a missed FT, which led to a dunk. He missed an open wing three. He bricked a fade in the post.

Hart -- -- The bright spot of this one as we moved him to the starting lineup with Kuzma out. He led the Lakers with 15 points on 6-9 shooting in the first half. Brilliant dunk rejection on Mitchell trying to highlight reel cram over him and instead ended up on Hart’s poster. Love how high he got up on that one. He had another strip-block on Mitchell on help D later in the second half. That was a good battle between the two. Mitchell definitely caught Hart off balance on a couple change of directions – a very tough cover. Hart also stepped in for a charge, deflected a lob, knocked a pass away in the backcourt for a steal and battled on the glass (but not with his usual numbers). Offensively, a mix of finishes at the rim, pull-ups in midrange and catch and shoot threes for his scoring. Loved seeing him curl into the lane to take a pass, then rise up and throwdown with both hands. He made midrange pull-ups moving both to his right and left. He took a couple late threes on iso to hurt his percentages. Strong two-way effort by the rookie. Got to love it. Picture him in the playoffs. He’s plug and play with any free agent superstars we could possibly get this offseason. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 10-18 shooting (2-8 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards (2 offensive), 1 assist, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 41 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: Short on a step-back three to start the game. He drew a charge in transition D. Great rotation to swipe a pass, he then took it the distance around defenders for a layup. Another layup in transition a few seconds later. He telegraphed a post entry pass, hustled back in transition and rejected Mitchell badly at the rim on a throwdown attempt. He cut off Randle’s post up, took the pass and finished strong over Gobert with the layup. He deflected a lob pass to ignite a break. He missed a corner jumper. He curled off a screen, took the pass and hammered with both hands. He sized up his man, set up on a couple small steps and drilled the pull-up three. He rose up high for an offensive board, bounced up and was fouled on the putback attempt, he made both FTs. He dribbled to his left, pulled up off both feet and missed the elbow jumper, fading a little. He up-faked at the three line, took a dribble past the fly-by and rattled in the pull-up jumper off two steps. Second Half: He missed a corner three off a hop on a swing pass. He was stripped on a baseline drive. He took a handoff to his left, rose up off a couple of steps and swished the 17-footer, fading a little to his left. He attacked hard off the three line and drew FTs at the rim, he made one (ref messed with him on the bad handoff on the first one and took it back from him). He swiped a pass in the backcourt. He deflected a kickout. He pushed up a dribble, probed left and scored the layup. He up-faked, attacked left off the three line but couldn’t finish around the help D at the rim. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He cut from the wing to his right, took the kickout and swished the pull-up 14-footer on the scissor kick as he wanted the foul for getting clipped. He blocked Mitchell again on a help D rotation. He swished a 29-footer on the catch and shoot off a swing pass to the wing. He missed a three, rising up off two steps on iso. He got a switch, sized up his man and stepped into the three to miss on the final possession.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- So you look at Josh Hart’s promising future and the price we’re paying KCP, who doesn’t really move the needle for us. These are most likely the last couple games as a Laker for KCP. If they need to do one-year deals next year, it seems more likely they go with IT and/or Lopez as they bring something different to the table. Very quiet night for KCP tonight. The Lakers really needed a better one from him if they were going to be competitive. He struggled to score and had a couple of passes to fans in the first rows. Not pretty. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-7 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: He stripped a man enough to allow Randle to reject him at the rim. He drew FTs in transition when Ennis fed him, he made both. He got middle and set up Randle rolling for the And-1. He attacked and threw a kickout to the Jazz bench, turnover. He missed a pull-up chuck from the wing. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He hit a hook over a big in the paint. He curled into the lane and flipped in the layup. He attacked and missed a dunk, but Randle cleaned it up. He swished a pull-up 18-footer, taking a handoff to his right. He attacked and threw another pass out of bounds. He airballed a baseline pull-up jumper. He got backdoored for an And-1.

Caruso -- -- Luke was pretty quick with the trigger as he gave up some easy drives and scores. As Ennis was feeling it, that shortened the night further for AC. He got his couple of field goals in a brief couple possession in the second half, one a nice reverse, the other a long jumper after stealing the ball. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-4 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -17. The Action: He missed an open wing three. He threw a pass away not making the simple play. Bad D giving up a layup on a weak rock back dribble move. He deflected another pass to ignite the break. Second Half: He swiped the ball under the hoop, took it out to the corner and swished the long jumper. He scored on a hanging reverse next time down. Quick counter attack to earn FTs after a made basket, he made both. Short on the 19-footer.

Frye -- -- He knocked down one three, but was rushed on his others. He was able to get into the post against some smaller defenders and work his way to his righty jumphook. Good to see him take advantage of those situations. He’d definitely be better off with more talent around him, drawing defenders. The second unit struggles with that at times. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-10 shooting (1-4 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He missed a wing three. He attacked the paint, missed, but was fouled on the rebound attempt. He missed a step-back fade in the post. He missed a step-back three. Second Half: His rushed three was blocked. He posted up a smaller man and hit the baseline jumphook. He missed a jumphook backing down a smaller man. He muscled Exum in the post for the And-1 jumphook, he made the FT. He sank a wing three off the catch. He missed the righty jumphook, not getting low position.

Zubac -- -- He scored his only points getting low position and muscling up for a layup. He also took his first jumper in forever. That was a growing part of his game and certainly something that was a consistent weapon last year for him. Just haven’t seen that from him too much. Quiet night from him. He misses IT causing the D to scramble off the screens. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 block, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He got the ball in low position, drew contact and powered up the layup. Second Half: He missed an open jumper from the top of the key.

Ennis -- -- Mr. April here apparently as Ennis seems to come to life this time of year. A new career high this afternoon with 22 points. In the offseason last year, the Lakers looked at a few other options besides Ennis before bringing him back. He’s been terrible for most of the year. So I can’t imagine even a good April will be enough for the Lakers to bring him back. Some great pass deflections or steals to start the game right after he entered. That helped the Lakers reel in the Jazz some in the first half. He had 9 points, 4 boards and 3 steals in the half. He was aggressive, taking 18 shots along with Hart. He took what the D gave him. They were mostly wanting him to score, but he did miss a couple passes (Hart for an open three at the end of the half and Zubac also open in the paint on other play). So not exactly playmaking, but can’t complain about the rest of his game as he helped the Lakers keep things close for a while. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 9-18 shooting (1-3 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 3 steals, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He jumped a passing lane for a steal, then missed the uncontested layup. He swiped another pass next time down and handed it off to KCP for FTs. Good close to force an airball on a three. He worked off the screen and scored a layup over Gobert. He spun baseline and scooped in a layup. He swished a quick-fire wing three on a kickout. He missed a pull-up 18-footer in transition. He stripped a man under the hoop. He hit a floater in the paint over a big. He airballed a floater. He missed a heave from three at the buzzer (had Hart open for an easier one). Second Half: He went around a man trying to take an intentional foul and scored the layup. He attacked left and couldn’t finish over the help. Offensive foul using an off-hand on the dribble. He lobbed to Bryant out of a timeout for an And-1 dunk. He missed a hook after pounding the dribble. He hit a pull-up push shot off the high screen. He attacked the paint, got into the chest of the big and flipped up and in the And-1, he made the FT. He probed around his man and reversed. He missed a wing three off a handoff. He swished a pull-up wing jumper on iso. He was tripped up on a pushout for FTs, he made both.

Wear -- -- He struggled a bit with the shot. But he wasn’t getting as good a looks as some of the Jazz shooters tonight, so credit the Jazz, but he’d be better off with someone like Lonzo getting things flowing. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-5 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He missed a floater (should have gone glass). He traveled at midcourt trying to heave up a half-courter. He cut, took a pass and hit the fade in the lane. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He missed a wing three. Nice close to challenge a three. He missed a sideline three off a flare screen.

Payton -- -- I don’t see enough NBA talent here. He’s serviceable defensively (a couple pass deflections tonight), but everything else seems like a struggle. I’d really like to see him try to push the tempo and get up and down the court, but he’s just not a factor there. The freethrow shooting has also looked ridiculously bad at times in his past couple games. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-5 shooting (1-2 from three, 1-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: Wild finish attempt on the break and he missed. He was undercut on a baseline drive for FTs, he bricked both. He hit Wear in the lane for a short jumper. He badly bricked a three. He was hit in transition for FTs, he made one. Second Half: He missed a lefty layup. He iso’d and hit a one-footed step-back. He sank a wing three on a kickout. He deflected a pass. He deflected a wing pass.

Bryant -- -- Some extra run for him tonight. He quickly made his presence known for an And-1 lob dunk out of a timeout. After that, we didn’t really integrate him into the offense. With Frye out there with him, we also didn’t see him out on the perimeter where he’s a threat. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-1 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist and no fouls in 9 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: And-1 lob dunk out of a timeout, he made the FT. He pulled down an offensive board in a crowd and kicked out to Payton for three.

Walton -- -- Lakers losing this one quickly, falling behind 16-4 when the timeout came. They were giving up easy layups and missing three of their own layups on the other end… Ennis in for Caruso… A series of pass deflections by Ennis and Hart and the Lakers got in transition to cut it back to 7 and forced a timeout… Frye in for Lopez out of that… Hart out for Payton, down 6… Zubac in for Randle down 7… The Lakers trailed 30-21 after the first quarter. Both teams had 7 turnovers… The Lakers started a Zubac, Frye, Wear, Payton, Ennis lineup… Hart in for Payton after 2 minutes, Lakers down 6… KCP in for Wear, Lakers down 4… Lopez, Randle and Caruso in for KCP, Zubac and Frye down 6… Caruso out for Ennis… Ennis out for Payton down 7… The Lakers trailed 50-44 at the half. Lakers just 2-12 from three. Jazz had 12 turnovers… They chipped at the lead but Lopez and KCP were mucking things up and they fell back by 10. Luke called timeout… Frye in for Lopez out of that… Zubac in for Randle, Lakers down 12… Ennis in for Caruso… The Lakers trailed 82-67 heading into the fourth… He started the Zubac, Frye, Wear, Payton, Ennis G-League lineup… Timeout as they fell back by 21… Bryant in and they set up a lob dunk for him out of that timeout… Wear in for Frye down 15… The Jazz were playing their starters, so nothing crazy would happen…

Lame that the team is sitting the "stars". I'd be pissed if I paid money to watch these G leaguers shtt the bed like this. These injuries better be for real... Legit all-stars don't even sit out like this.

Thanks DB.

Only Hart and Mr. April played well imo.

Randle is getting production but it seems it’s hard on him (opponents can pack the paint) with our young trio out.

Lopez was really disappointing today and I thought Caruso hurt his chances today, specifically on defense and lack of effort on a few plays that led to great looks and easy points for the Jazz.

Why on earth would we play our future in games that do not matter at all? Knowledgeable fans will not complain.

Thanks DB! As far as this season goes, the bloom is off the rose. With all the injuries, we are lame ducks limping to the finish line. Nice to see Hart back on his game. Mr. April making a good impression in his "contract month."

Riiigght.

If that's the case, they might as well have sat all season.

Season is over man. Some guys are battling for jobs, some guys are trying to convince the FO to keep them.

They should be fighting to attract FA's but that is tough because they have to know that attracting FA's risks their futures here and in the league.

Nice to see Hart get some extended play and excelling at it.

I don't think ANYTHING that happens the rest of the season other than avoiding injuries that extend into next year is going to matter.

I am already bored. Here's to hoping we have some good news at the FA signing deadlines.

Thanks DB

Nice to see Hart string together some really good games to finish the season.

When Ennis is on the radar for having a good game you know we are in trouble.

Randle seems a little tired but he also seems to have lost some aggressiveness as he tries to pass more. Touch around the basket has been off lately too.

Thanks DB. If Payton's last name was Smith, he would not even be able to get a cup of coffee in the G League.

I can see that. But having these guys play with ither scrubs isn't the greatest way to showcase their talents. But, I'm not the decision maker, so what do I know. I just feel it's lame to sit everyone.... Leaves a bad taste in people's mouths and sets a bad precedent imo.

Yeah but with all the injuries, what can be done? Just a lousy way to end the year.

There is a difference in just sitting players and not risking their health when they are injured.
I can quite easily understand the extra caution taken at this stage of the season. There is nothing to gain if they play, hence the risk of aggravating injuries is not worth taking at all.
