This is the XFL, again: Controversial football league set to return in 2020
Quote: | As if 2017 was not crazy enough, 2018 has fired its opening salvo as the return of the XFL, a controversial football league originally founded by Vince McMahon in 1999, will be officially announced on Thursday, sources close to the situation confirm to CBS Sports. |

I'd heard rumblings about that. Clearly, the public had been clamoring for this. Clearly. |

Never understood why a pro football league that isn't called the NFL plays in a stadium that could fit about 90k fans in it....but thats what the XFL did in LA and boy did it look empty. They would probably need to play in a smaller stadium like the Stubhub Center or venue where the atmosphere isn't dead. The new LAFC stadium being built next to the Coliseum is smaller than the Stubhub Center and probably has some open weekends. |

If football fans wanted to watch a bunch of no-name, second rate players or washed up known players, then the CFL would be broadcast in the US and have a loyal fanbase and the various arena leagues that have started and stopped over the years would have been successful.
The XFL got some traction initially because the hype and novelty. It won't have that this time around. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

The only good thing about the XFL was that the LA team won the title.

Watch out college football. Players are going to have a venue to show their worth and be paid while showing it. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

I actually think something like the XFL can succeed but it would have to carve its own creative niche. That doesn't mean replicating stuff the NFL does best or doing what other leagues have failed like the previous XFL iteration or the USFL. For one the NFL has been trying to get a foothold into Europe. They keep taking away a home game from one of the NFL teams and force them to play in London. Well, why not have an entire division of the XFL play in Europe. Then come playoff time have them meet up with another division in the XFL playoffs. This would fulfill a niche NFL Europe lost when they closed down the league. Another idea would be to play in much smaller venues. You are an upstart football league why bother to try to compete with the NFL and play in the same size venues. A smaller venue would mean the crowd is closer to the action because the fans can really get into it. Think Monday Night Raw when they first started in those small theaters or civic centers. The crowds were small but they got into the action. Another would be putting teams in football hotbeds that don't have an NFL team. There are a lot of college teams in the South that don't use their stadiums during the offseason and they would probably welcome another sporting event during the Spring. |

The problem with the CFL is that it looks familiar but in actuality its a lot different from the American game.
For one theres 3 downs.
The field is much longer and wider.
They have that goal post sticking out in front of the end zone and it actually looks like a safety hazard. Theres a reason why the NFL moved it back decades ago. |

How about taking the league to Canada? Have it compete against the CFL as did the AFL. In time maybe the competition would rival as the two leagues did here. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

Probably has to do with the potential fanbase for pro football in Canada vs the US. The US is crazy for football....there are more fans for college football than there is for CFL in Canada. Just at the size of the CFL stadiums. The majority of the stadiums are the size of an MLS stadium. |

Feels like Vince is trying to capitalize on the anthem protests. Made sure to say standing was mandatory. And didn't sound welcoming of Colin Kaepernick at all being in the XFL. He did sound very happy to welcome Tim Tebow if he was interested..
Yea I think i'll pass on this one. |

Yes, the market would be smaller, not as lucrative as American football. The competition may produce a atmosphere that spooks new interests. I think it has a better chance in Canada than it does here. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

This is why I think Europe would be a better market than Canada. Canada already has a well established league. Europe had the WFL which later became NFL Europe. They had a pretty good fanbase in the UK, Netherlands, Germany and Spain. Obviously the NFL thinks highly enough that they keep putting more and more games in the UK. |

Matt Leinhart probably has a better chance.
Not sure Kaepernick would want to play when he has to stand. |

I'm not versed on UK football. Do they still have the NFLE and WL? If so the competition is greater there. If I have it right Canada's competition would be 1 on 1, new vs old. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

NFL-E is long gone. There is a fair amount of interest in American football in Europe, but not enough to support expansion there. Generally speaking, it’s sort of a novelty for Europeans. |

World League was formed by the NFL....funny enough the concept was pretty similar to the USFL, have teams in smaller non-NFL markets playing during the spring. It was envisioned as a league that included teams in Europe as well, and that is what it eventually became, primarily a European based American style football league. The NFL folded the league in 2007 and determined it was easier and more profitable to just fly NFL teams to play in London.....which is why we currently have a number of the teams in the NFL do once a season. |

Yup! There is also a fair amount of hate for it, but it could be mildly successful.
