Lakers Give Qualifying Offers To Jordan Clarkson, Marcelo Huertas, And Tarik Black'
by Ryan Ward - lakersnation.com

The Los Angeles Lakers have made their first moves ahead of the start of NBA free agency. The storied franchise is preparing for what will likely be an incredibly busy free agency period, and their first order of business is taking care of a few of their players from last season’s roster.

Jordan Clarkson, Marcelo Huertas, and Tarik Black have received qualifying offers from the team. Ryan Kelly, however, didn’t receive the same offer, according to Eric Pincus of Basketball Insiders:

Lakers have given qualifying offers to Jordan Clarkson, Tarik Black & Marcelo Huertas making all 3 restricted, not Ryan Kelly @BBallInsiders
— Eric Pincus (@EricPincus) June 30, 2016

As for Black and Huertas, it was uncertain where they stood regarding their immediate future with the Lakers. Both players showed promise during their time in Los Angeles but seem to be considered expendable. If offer sheets from teams start pouring in, it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that both players could be wearing a different uniform next season. By making them restricted free agents, however, the Lakers have at least given themselves the option to match any offers.

Nicolas Batum is one of the Lakers top targets
by Harrison Faigen - silverscreenandroll.com

This is encouraging.

The Los Angeles Lakers got free agency started with a bang, reportedly offering Cleveland Cavaliers center Timofey Mozgove a four-year, $65 million deal on the first night of free agency. While that might understandably worry some fans, one of the team's other top targets is a bit more encouraging.

Mike Bresnahan of Time Warner Cable Sportsnet reports that Charlotte forward Nicolas Batum is "at or near the top of the Lakers' list" of free agent targets. Batum is arguably the top-wing option on the market not named Kevin Durant, and the Lakers do have a need for more players with the ability to play small forward.

Batum is a capable three-point shooter and playmaker who can also defend up or down a position, making him one of the most versatile players in a league that increasingly values the ability to switch on defense. Bresnahan reports this is a large part of his appeal to Los Angeles:

Batum is a small forward and the Lakers obviously drafted one in Ingram, but they think Batum can also play shooting guard if need be.

— Mike Bresnahan (@Mike_Bresnahan) July 1, 2016

Batum would additionally alleviate the need for Brandon Ingram to guard the best opposing wing player right off the bat, while also being able to shift down and play the role of small ball power forward should new head coach Luke Walton decide to bring that style of play with him from Golden State.

Lakers express interest in Kent Bazemore
by Mark Medina - insidesocal.com

The Lakers’ quest to facilitate their rebuilding project led them toward reaching back to their recent past.

The Lakers expressed interest on Thursday in acquiring Atlanta forward Kent Bazemore, according to league sources. But two years after Bazemore became a lost casualty of the Lakers’ heavier priority on star free agents, the Lakers will field stiff competition from other teams interested in his services.

Bazemore met with representatives of the Houston Rockets on Thursday night and has shown interest toward six other teams, including the Hawks, league sources said. After averaging 11.6 points on 44.1 percent shooting and 5.1 rebounds in his second season with Atlanta, Bazemore has become a rising commodity because of his offensive and defensive versatility.

The Lakers wanted to re-sign Bazemore in the 2014 offseason. He had averaged a career-high 13.1 points per game through 28 appearances with the Lakers, arriving in February after the NBA trade deadline in a deal that sent Steve Blake to the Golden State Warriors.

Chandler Parsons to get multiple max contract offers
by Dillon Hiser - lakersoutsiders.com

Marc Stein of ESPN has reported that Parsons will get max offers from both Memphis and Portland, making his chances of landing with the Lakers seem very slim.

Either way, whether Portland or Memphis, it appears Parsons and agent Dan Fegan will get the max deal they vowed to get after Dallas divorce

Pau Gasol interested in a return to the Lakers
by Gary Kester - lakersoutsiders.com

The NBA free agency period turned to chaos hours before it even began, with numerous reports of the Los Angeles Lakers not even having a chance to meet with some of the top free agents in this year’s group.

The Lakers needed a center in the worst way, and once Hassan Whiteside decided he would not meet with Los Angeles, it was time to turn to other options. While many speculated that it could be time for the Lakers to make a move for Bismack Biyombo, they surprised everyone by reaching out to Cleveland Cavaliers big man Timofey Mozgov right as the moratorium period opened.

Shortly after, the Lakers and Mozgov reportedly reached an agreement on a four-year, $64 million contract. Immediately after that, another surprising name was thrown out there as an option for the Lakers: Pau Gasol.

ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reports that the once beloved Gasol is surprisingly open to a return to Los Angeles, if they want him.

To put even more perspective on Lakers choice on Mozgov. Been told door was open on Pau's side for a return.
10:18 PM - 30 Jun 2016 · Los Angeles, CA, United States

The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski also reported that Gasol is interested in being a Laker again, but there is no word on how the team feels about it. With Mozgov and Tarik Black expected to fill most of the minutes at center, there may be no room for Gasol to return to Los Angeles.

Lakers agree to deal with Cavaliers center Timofey Mozgov, reportedly worth $64 million for four years
by Mark Medina - ocregister.com

The Lakers did not waste any time addressing the biggest hole on their roster.

Even if it cost them plenty of money. Even if it involved pursuing a player who had recently had a limited role.

In a move that reflected the Lakers’ urgent need at center and a rising NBA salary cap, the Lakers agreed to terms on Thursday night with Cleveland free-agent center Timofey Mozgov on a deal worth $64 million over four years, according to leagues sources. The deal, first reported by The Vertical, cannot be signed until the NBA moratorium ends on July 7.

That marks some hefty change for Mozgov, who averaged 6.3 points and 4.4 rebounds and shot 56.6 percent from the field last season, when he made $4.95 million and started 48 games for the Cavaliers. While plenty of attention was focused on LeBron James and Kyrie Irving as they led Cleveland to its first NBA title, Mozgov played just 25 minutes in the seven NBA Finals games because of injuries. He averaged just 5.8 minutes in 13 postseason appearances this spring.

Spurned by several of the bigger-name players before the negotiating window even opened, the Lakers turned their attention to the soon-to-be 30-year-old Mozgov. Moving swiftly to use a big portion of their roughly $55 million in salary cap space, General Manager Mitch Kupchak reached out to the six-year veteran when free agency began at 9:01 p.m. PT on Thursday, according to league sources.

After all, the 7-foot-1 Russian showed promise in the 2014-15 season when he averaged 10.6 points and 6.9 rebounds in 46 games. Lakers assistant coach Brian Shaw has liked Mozgov’s game since coaching him with the Denver Nuggets (2013-15). And the Lakers lacked a starting center after deciding not to retain Roy Hibbert, who posted a career-low in points (5.9) and anchored a defense that ranked 27th in points allowed (106.8).

Mozgov has never averaged 11 points or 8 rebounds per game in an NBA season, and his new deal represents the necessity of the Lakers to overpay.

Jordan Clarkson Agrees To Four-Year, $50 Million Deal To Stay In L.A.
by Ryan Ward - lakersnation.com

The Los Angeles Lakers have a long list of players from last year’s roster hitting the free agent market this summer with Jordan Clarkson being the team’s top priority. Clarkson had another solid season after an impressive rookie campaign and is more than deserving of a new long-term deal as a restricted free agent.

According to Shams Charania of The Vertical, Clarkson has agreed to terms with the Lakers on a deal worth $50 million over four years:

Jordan Clarkson has reached agreement on a four-year, $50M deal to return to the Los Angeles Lakers, league sources tell The Vertical.

— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) July 1, 2016

Although the Lakers want to be aggressive in free agency and hope to land one or two big-name free agents, Clarkson’s new contract was near the top of the to-do list. The Missouri product has shown a lot of promise over the last two years and has dedicated himself to improving his game on both ends of the basketball floor during the offseason.

How signing Timofey Mozgov in free agency could make sense for the Lakers
by Harrison Faigen - silverscreenandroll.com

Despite the initial reaction, there are some positives here (along with some cons as well).

As you have surely heard by now, the Los Angeles Lakers reportedly signed Timofey Mozgov to a four-year, $64 million deal on the first night of free agency. The now former Cleveland Cavaliers center was Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak's first call of free agency, and the two sides moved swiftly to make a deal happen.

The reaction was swift, a unique cocktail of fury and bewilderment that was previously only thought possible if the Lakers re-signed Dwight Howard to a max contract and announced plans to start him at point guard.

Lakers fans on social media were despondent. Analysts overreacted (yours truly among them), with questions generally falling into three categories. Let's answer them in order:

1) "Why did they sign him for so much money?"

To put it simply, because the NBA's cap situation is bananas right now. Teams have more money than they know what to do. The wake of the rising cap is going to lead to a tsunami of spending, the Lakers were just the first part of the wave to hit the shore.

In fact, when taking a step back, the annual salary is at the very least defensible, even if it might be a slight overpay. However, as Eric Pincus of Basketball Insiders expertly explained, the price tag is not as bad as the initial sticker shock.

Cap proj. is $107M but could reach $110+ mil for 17/8 - Mozgov's $ would be 14.3% - equivalent to $10M on $70M cap https://t.co/gN523LCRta

— Eric Pincus (@EricPincus) July 1, 2016

2) "Why is the deal four years?"

This part is legitimately perplexing. Mozgov is 29-years old, and as anyone who has watched the NBA for any extended length of time can tell you, plodding big men like him age fast once they start to decline. Did the front office really need to offer that fourth-year?

No one knows right now, but one thing possibly in the Lakers favor is that the structure of the deal is still unknown. The third and/or fourth years could very well be subject to partial guarantees, or the last year might be a team option. If either of those scenarios are the case, the contract at least looks a little better.

3) "Wasn't this guy basically benched for the Cavaliers entire Finals run?"

Yes, but that was more of a function of the Cavaliers' roster. Tristan Thompson is a better offensive rebounder and more versatile defender than Mozgov, two traits Cleveland heavily utilized during their journey to the franchise's first title.

The team also traded for Channing Frye to play as a stretch-five, and both of those factors led to many forgetting that Mozgov was a huge part of Cavs run through the Eastern Conference just last year. The team outscored opponents by 11 points per 100 possessions while Mozgov was on the floor after his midseason acquisition, which ranked first on the team, even ahead of even LeBron James' 9.8 net rating.

So what does Mozgov do well that allowed him to have such effectiveness for the Cavaliers last season? A couple of things.

When Drew Garrison and I were going through the editorial process for his piece on Hassan Whiteside's effectiveness out of pick-and-rolls this week, we both had a good laugh at the seeming randomness of Mozgov's name showing up on this chart of the most efficient dive men in the league this season:

Pau Gasol was 'open' to returning to the Lakers
by Harrison Faigen - silverscreenandroll.com

It sounds like that window has passed though, now.

The first night of free agency just keeps getting stranger. First, the Los Angeles Lakers signed Timofey Mozgov to a four-year, $64 million deal right out of the gates of free agency. The signing isn't totally indefensible. The Lakers have a desperate need for frontcourt contributors, and while that may seem like a lot of money and years for Mozgov, we don't know the final details of the deal and what contract options the team has. The signing is not as strange once put in perspective as it appeared to be in real time.

Possibly the strangest part of the whole process came next, when Ramona Shelburne of ESPN reported that the "door was open on Pau [Gasol's] side for a return."

That is certainly unexpected, but it's also unknown how much money it would have taken to keep that door open. Pau is also a much worse defender than Mozgov, and his preference for posting-up rather than playing out of pick-and-rolls would seem to be a poor fit for this young and fast Lakers' roster.

NBA AM: Defending The Timofey Mozgov, Lakers Deal

Quote:
As hard as the Lakers tried to lure top guys into town for a free agency visit, the club just didn’t receive any traction. Top free agents such as Al Horford, Hassan Whiteside and Dwight Howard were inaccessible. Securing the autograph of a superstar such as Kevin Durant was a pipe dream – at best.

Before the Lakers can dream of signing big names, the team must improve their on-court talent level. The club has an interesting mix of youth with D’Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson, Julius Randle, Larry Nance Jr. and, now, Brandon Ingram. However, the club is lacking veterans who have proven to be productive.

2016 Summer League: Key Laker Storylines To Follow

by Thai Luong-Lakersoutsiders.com
It has been over two months since we last saw the Lakers play competitive basketball, too long if you ask me. Luckily in a few weeks, the Lakers’ summer league team can satisfy our basketball craving when they compete against the New Orleans Pelicans on July 8th in Las Vegas.

The Lakers are scheduled to play three preliminary games. After the preliminary games, the Lakers will then play two more games in a seeded tournament.

The roster includes familiar names in D’Angelo Russell, Larry Nance Jr., Anthony Brown, and Jabari Brown. The Lakers’ new draftees Brandon Ingram and Ivica Zubac are on the roster as well. Zach Auguste and Jamil Wilson will be joining the Lakers team as reported last week. Newer names on the roster are Xavier Munford, Nikola Jovanovic, Trevor Lacey, Ethan Wragge, and Jarvis Varnado.

Summer league is a time for rookies to get acclimated to the NBA style of play and for coaches to install their schemes and points of emphasis on the court. It is a semi-competitive basketball competition, but it is still important. The Lakers will play at least five games in the Las Vegas summer league.

Here are important storylines you should look out for during their games:

Meet the 2016 Lakers Summer League Team
by Joey Ramirez - nba.com

The youngest Lakers hit the hardwood on July 8, as the team sends its entry to the annual Las Vegas Summer League.

This year's outfit includes second-overall draft pick Brandon Ingram and No. 32 pick Ivica Zubac, who will make their first dive into the NBA. The Lakers will also send three sophomores — D'Angelo Russell, Larry Nance Jr. and Anthony Brown — along with nine other players from leagues across the globe.

Here is a look at the squad that will represent the purple and gold under the direction of new assistant coach Jesse Mermuys.

Timofey Mozgov is excited to join the Lakers
by Harrison Faigen - silverscreenandroll.com

Los Angeles' new big man is excited to join the team.

The Los Angeles Lakers signing Russian center Timofey Mozgov to a four-year deal worth $64 million in the opening hour of free agency certainly raised eyebrows among fans and around the NBA. The commitment is certainly a gamble for Los Angles' front office, but there are reasons to believe it could work out.

Mozgov is an effective screener and productive roll man out of pick-and-roll sets, easily the best the Lakers young guard core of D'Angelo Russell and Jordan Clarkson will have ever played with. He's also a good rim protector, and a strong defender when not asked to guard ball handlers in open space.

Those are all reasons the Lakers might have signed Mozgov, and he revealed to Timur Rustamov of Sport Express why he decided to join Los Angeles' rebuilding effort. Other than the Lakers making him a priority and the money, Mozgov shared that he grew up watching the team (this appears to be a translation from Russian to English, so these might not be exact quotes):

Timofey Mozgov: Conversation With Luke Walton Was ‘Key’ To Signing With Lakers
by Ryan Ward - lakersnation.com

It hasn’t been a great start to the free agency period for the Los Angeles Lakers with the storied franchise finding it difficult to get consideration from the best players available. Although many of the big names on the market have passed on the opportunity to sign with the Lakers, center Timofey Mozgov jumped at the chance with new head coach Luke Walton having a lot to do with his decision.

In an interview with Timur Rustamov of Basketball.Sports-Express.eu, Mozgov said he spoke with Walton, who envisions the veteran as his starting center:

Mozgov on desicion to join @lakers: convo with Walton was key, he loves the things I can do on the court and sees me as his primary center

— Timur Rustamov (@t1m1ch) July 1, 2016

It’ll be interesting to see how Mozgov fits in Walton’s system if he’s trying to duplicate the Golden State Warriors style of basketball. Walton likely sees Mozgov as an Andrew Bogut-type for the Lakers meaning he could have a profound role on this team moving forward.

Landing Timofey Mozgov while Clippers pursue Kevin Durant another rock-bottom moment for Lakers
by Jeff Miller - ocregister.com

One of the biggest challenges in this job is coming up with fodder ridiculous enough to make mocking a situation easy.

It can be tough, concocting the sort of absurdity that sounds completely believable even as it seems simply too outrageous to actually be true.

Thankfully, in this market, we have the Lakers.

A once-championship and still-proud organization, the Lakers have become an uncontested dunk for those of us who love to poke fun in sports.

On second thought, for the sake of relevance, let’s say a nearly uncontested dunk, like that time six years ago when Timofey Mozgov stood flat-footed and flat helpless as Blake Griffin soared over him for a slam so emphatic that, years from now, Mozgov’s grandchildren will still be flinching.

Just 45 minutes into the free-agency signing period Thursday night, the Lakers made their latest splash – think of a pebble hitting the Pacific – by adding Mozgov, who previously played for NBA champion Cleveland.

At least he did until the Cavaliers really needed to win. Then Mozgov barely played at all.

As the Cavs made their historic comeback from a 3-1 NBA Finals deficit to Golden State, Mozgov totaled four minutes and 11 seconds in their three consecutive victories. He scored zero points and had one more rebound than you did.

Oh, sure, he started at various points throughout the regular season, until losing that job to Tristan Thompson.

The Lakers just committed four years and $64 million to a center who, during Cleveland’s final 44 games beginning in late February, only once played as many as 24 minutes.

And, yeah, Mozgov’s inactivity was impacted by the fact the NBA’s best teams continue to go smaller, another ridiculous detail to note as the Lakers just decided to go in the opposite direction by adding a 7-footer.

Kent Bazemore Turns Down Lakers’ Big Offer, Agrees To Re-Sign With Hawks
by Trevor Lane - lakersnation.com

Free agency certainly hasn’t gotten off to the start that the Los Angeles Lakers hoped it would. After landing Timofey Mozgov with a controversial four-year, $64 million deal and bringing back Jordan Clarkson for four years and $50 million, the team has stalled in their efforts to land other targets.

Nicolas Batum, who was rumored to be near the top of the Lakers’ wish list, returned to the Charlotte Hornets on a huge deal. Chandler Parsons joined Mike Conley in Memphis, and Hassan Whiteside opted to go back to the Miami Heat. The free agent pool that was considered shallow from the get-go is drying up quickly.

Now, it appears that former-Laker Kent Bazemore has turned down a big offer from the Lakers as well as the Houston Rockets to return to the Atlanta Hawks (per David Aldridge of TNT):

Kent Bazemore takes four years, $70M, turning down four/$72M from Houston and the Lakers, to go back to the Hawks, per source.

— David Aldridge (@daldridgetnt) July 2, 2016

Reaction around the league was less than positive when the Mozgov deal was announced, but as free agency continues we are seeing a number of surprisingly big contracts go to mid-tier players. Had Bazemore accepted the Lakers’ offer he would have been a solid addition, but whether or not tying up that much cap space on a player of his caliber is wise or not would be debatable.

Lakers interested in Ryan Anderson
by Mark Medina - insidesocal.com

New Orleans power forward Ryan Anderson left the Beverly Wilshire on Friday afternoon after having a meeting with the Toronto Raptors. The location seemed fitting considering the Lakers are interested in Anderson, too.

Last season, Anderson averaged 16.5 points off the bench (ranked second among reserves) and made 36.6 percent of his 3-point attempts. The 6-foot-10 Anderson would also give the Lakers added versatility to take advantage of the modern NBA that Lakers coach Luke Walton hopes to implement from his time with the Golden State Warriors.

Luol Deng, Lakers agree to four-year, $72 million deal
by espn.go.com

Free agent Luol Deng has agreed to a four-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers that is worth $72 million, according to a report Saturday by The Vertical.

After struggling to find consistency and a comfortable role through much of his two seasons in Miami, Deng blossomed when he shifted from small forward to power forward with All-Star Chris Bosh lost in February for the second time to treat blood clots.

Deng, 31, averaged 15.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.2 steals in 28 games after the All-Star break, when he shot 48.4 percent from the field in 31.4 minutes. Deng's versatility on both ends of the court was vital in the Heat's transition to an up-tempo pace over the second half of the season and fueled their push to the second round of the playoffs.

"He was getting more space and room to run and cut and be himself," Heat president Pat Riley said of Deng, a 12-year veteran who spent his first nine seasons with Chicago. "He's a great leader. We love him. He's a high-character guy. I consider him one of our core people."

DeMar DeRozan agrees to five-year deal with Raptors
by sportsnet.ca

DeMar DeRozan had hinted just hours after the Toronto Raptors‘ best season in franchise history had come to an emotional end that he wasn’t going anywhere.

The all-star shooting guard stayed true to his word.

DeRozan turned the biggest season of his career into a very big contract, agreeing to a five-year deal just hours after free agency opened, a source told The Canadian Press.

The deal is reportedly worth US$139 million.

Lakers 2016 Summer League Schedule
by lakersnation.com

The Los Angeles Lakers 2016 Summer League Schedule is set. The Lakers will be officially tipping off the first of three preliminary NBA Summer League games on Friday, July 8 at 7:30PM against the New Orleans Pelicans. The Lakers are guaranteed to play no fewer than five games, and all games will be played at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Highlighting the preliminary game set will be the match-up of the top two picks in the most recent NBA Draft. First overall draft pick Ben Simmons of the Philadelphia 76’ers, and second overall pick Brandon Ingram of the Lakers will see action against one another on Saturday, July 9 at 5:30PM. The Lakers will then conclude their scheduled games with a contest against the reigning Western Conference champion Golden State Warriors, on Monday, July 11 at 7:30PM.

At the completion of the preliminary games, all teams will be seeded in a tournament format. Tournament games will begin on July 13, and conclude with the championship game on July 18.

Time Warner Cable SportsNet will be offering comprehensive coverage of the entire tournament, broadcasting all three Lakers games live, with pregame shows scheduled 30 minutes before each game, and an entire hour of post game coverage. Additional television coverage of the Lakers and the tournament can be found on Time Warner Cable Deportes, along with ESPN and NBATV.

Tickets for the 2016 NBA Summer League are currently on sale and can be purchased by visiting NBATickets.com.

The two signings have a lot of Walton in it. If he coaches this team to success, I bet he will be a GM someday.

Mozgov/ Black/ Zubac
Randle/ LNJ
Deng/ Brown/ Young
Ingram/Luo
Russell/ JC/ Huertas

Only two spots left; three if Young is waived. 3&D players would be welcomed. They could use the remaining cap space on a one-year contract, or just save most of it for trade opportunities.

Lakers are only trying to land proven vets and good locker room guys - Mozgov, Deng, Huertas.
Fair complement to the rising young core.
