Preview: Lakers at Cleveland Cavaliers

By Eric Pincus
February 5, 2014, 6:15 a.m.

The Cleveland Cavaliers haven't been decimated by injuries like the Lakers have. They play in the weaker Eastern Conference in which just five teams have winning records.

Somehow though, the Cavaliers have the same record as the Lakers through 48 games, 16-32.

Injuries have defined the season for the Lakers, who just got Steve Nash and Steve Blake back on Tuesday night in a loss to the Timberwolves in Minnesota.

Jordan Farmar (hamstring) should be available Wednesday when the Lakers visit the Cavaliers. Jodie Meeks (ankle), Pau Gasol (groin), Kobe Bryant (knee) and Xavier Henry (knee) are out.

Jordan Hill's status is unclear after taking an inadvertent elbow to the face from teammate Chris Kaman on Tuesday.

Blake suffered a punctured ear drum on Tuesday but was able to finish the game.

Key matchup

Kyrie Irving drives the Cavaliers' offense, averaging 21.7 points and 6.2 assists per game.

Voted in as an all-star starter in the Eastern Conference, Irving is an extremely difficult cover.

Unfortunately for the Cavaliers, he hasn't been able to carry the team to many wins.

The Lakers may start Blake or Farmar at the point, or perhaps Kendall Marshall with Blake at the two.

Depleted Lakers make a stop in Cleveland
Published February 05, 2014Sports Network
(SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of teams with disappointing identical records collide Wednesday at Quicken Loans Arena, as the Cleveland Cavaliers play host to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Cavaliers have lost five in a row and seven of their last eight games, including Monday's 124-107 drubbing at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks in the finale of a three-game road trip.

Kyrie Irving led seven Cleveland players in double figures with 27 points, while Luol Deng and Tristan Thompson scored 18 and 17 points, respectively, in defeat.

"I thought offensively we did some nice things out there," said Cleveland coach Mike Brown. "I thought we had some great looks from the perimeter -- especially early in the game -- that did not go in. The ball was moving fairly well, the spacing was good. We had some stretches where we couldn't score. Dallas took advantage of it and they got some easy buckets."

Lakers-Cavaliers Preview

Having Steve Nash on the court for the first time in nearly three months wasn't enough to get the Los Angeles Lakers out of their funk.

The injury-riddled Lakers and slumping Cavaliers bring identical records and similar lengthy losing streaks into their matchup in Cleveland on Wednesday night.

Nash and fellow point guard Steve Blake were both back from long injury absences on Tuesday, but Kevin Love was too much for the Lakers (16-32) to handle in a 109-99 loss at Minnesota that extended their skid to seven and was their 19th defeat in 22 games.

The slide is Los Angeles' longest since a seven-game skid from March 2-15, 2007.

After missing 34 games because of a nerve problem in his back, Nash was in the starting lineup and finished with seven points and nine assists. The two-time league MVP logged 25 minutes -- about 10 more than he was supposed to play.

"I feel a bit selfish in that we lost but it felt great just to play in the NBA again," said a smiling Nash, who will turn 40 on Friday. "Obviously the game didn't go as we hoped, but for me personally that's pretty cool to be back out there."

Coach Mike D'Antoni was pleased after Nash shot 3 for 6 with two turnovers.

"I thought he competed, and we've got to have everybody compete that way," he said.

Blake, who was playing for the first time since tearing an elbow ligament Dec. 10, was scoreless in more than 32 minutes, but chipped in six assists and five rebounds.

While Nash and Blake were in the starting lineup, the Lakers were without Pau Gasol, who sat out because of a strained groin and is expected to be sidelined for the final five games before the All-Star break.

The 1 Trade Deadline Deal the Los Angeles Lakers Have to Make
By Bryant Knox , Featured Columnist Feb 5, 2014

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The 2013-14 NBA season has been a lost year for the Los Angeles Lakers, but with the trade deadline looming, the organization has one deal it simply must make work.

According to ESPN's Marc Stein, the Phoenix Suns have become serious suitors for Pau Gasol:

Sources told ESPN.com that the Suns, among the options being weighed as part of their well-chronicled desire to acquire an established player as they make an unexpected playoff push this season, have been exploring the feasibility of trading for the Lakers' four-time All-Star.

Stein goes on to explain how this fantasy in the desert could become a reality for both franchises:

One option for the Suns, by virtue of their $5.6 million in available salary-cap space, is swapping the expiring contract of injured big man Emeka Okafor for Gasol, even though Okafor's $14.5 million salary this season falls well shy of Gasol's $19.3 million.

Told by Lakers they’re dropping him, Manny Harris scores 19 points for Los Angeles
Dan Feldman Feb 5, 2014, 1:44 PM EST
8 Comments

Steve Nash and Steve Blake returned for the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday. Jordan Farmar should be back soon, too.

So, it makes sense the Lakers wouldn’t re-sign Manny Harris. They’ve already signed him to two 10-day contracts, the second of which expires today, and they’d have to re-sign him for the rest of the season to keep him.

Harris might have still helped the Lakers, but with so many guards returning, that’s just too big a commitment to make right now.

In a show of class, the Lakers told Harris of their decision before Tuesday’s game against the Timberwolves. That allowed him and his agent more time to plot his next move.

While that was happening behind the scenes, Harris scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds against Minnesota. Arguably, no Laker played better in the game.

Harris, via Dave McMenamin of ESPN:

“Not knowing whether you’re going to stay or you’re going to go, you’re kind of scared to make mistakes,” Harris said. “It’s always better when you know either you’re going to stay or you’re going to leave. It’s always better.”

Lakers’ Pau Gasol sidelined two weeks due to strained groin
Posted On 05 Feb 2014

Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E Sports) – The Los Angeles Lakers announced that forward Pau Gasol will be sidelined for at least two weeks due to a strained right groin.

Gasol, who received a PRP injection to his strained right groin Monday, was originally expected to miss one week after aggravating his groin in the Lakers’ 110-100 loss to the Charlotte Bobcats.

However, he failed to fully recover from the injury, forcing the Lakers to rest him until he’s fully healed. He will be re-evaluated sometime during All-Star weekend.

Gasol did not accompany the Lakers on their three-game road trip through Minnesota, Cleveland and Philadelphia. He will now miss an additional three games at least — at home against Chicago, Utah and Oklahoma City.

The 13-year veteran averaged 20.8 points and 11.9 rebounds in January but the Lakers went just 3-12 during that stretch.

The Lakers and Phoenix Suns are currently entrenched in trade talks involving Gasol but it was stalled after the latter expressed concern with the player’s health.

L.A. Lakers Rumors: Pau Gasol Trade To Phoenix Suns Called Off

By Jordan Webb j.webb @ hngn.com | Feb 05, 2014 05:19 PM EST

Trade talks regarding Pau Gasol (L) were reportedly put on hold by the Phoenix Suns. (Photo : Reuters)
The Phoenix Suns reportedly ended trade discussions with the Los Angeles Lakers for veteran Pau Gasol. Phoenix is unwilling to part with one of their four 2014 NBA draft picks for Gasol, the L.A. Times report.

"The Phoenix Suns have stopped talks to acquire Pau Gasol because they feel the Lakers want too much for the veteran post player, according to a person familiar with the situation," Mike Bresnahan of The Times wrote on Tuesday.

Phoenix (29-19) sought to add the veteran big man to their frontcourt in anticipation of a playoff run, but the team wanted to see first how well he recovers from his groin injury.

"The Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns engaged in a fresh round of trade discussions Monday focused on four-time All-Star center Pau Gasol as both sides continued to assess their options in advance of the Feb. 20 trade deadline, according to sources with knowledge of the situation," Marc Stein and Ramona Shelburne of ESPN wrote on Tuesday.

"Sources told ESPN.com that, while there is substantive interest on both sides, it's believed Suns officials want to see how Gasol recovers from a strained groin before deciding whether to take talks to the next level."

Gasol re-aggravated his groin injury on Jan. 31 in a loss to the Charlotte Bobcats.

Gambadoro: Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers never talked about Pau Gasol

By Adam Green
Originally published: Feb 5, 2014 - 1:32 pm
Earlier in the week, reports surfaced that the Phoenix Suns were interested in acquiring Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol.
Provided, of course, Gasol could be had for the right price.

According to Arizona Sports' John Gambadoro, though, that's not at all the case.

The Suns were looked at as a potential suitor for a number of reasons, not the least of which was their ability to make a deal work under the salary cap without needing to surrender much in the way of assets.

The idea was that the Suns could send Emeka Okafor and his $14.5 million salary to L.A. That, along with Phoenix's $5.6 million in available cap space, would be enough to acquire Gasol and what's left of his $19.3 million contract.

However, it was believed the Suns would also have to part with a draft pick and/or young player to make a deal work, which some thought they would be inclined to do now that the team is in the thick of a surprising playoff run.

The 33-year-old Gasol is averaging 17.0 points and 10.2 rebounds per game for the Lakers. A four-time All-Star, his expressed frustration as part of head coach Mike D'Antoni's offense and is currently sidelined with a groin injury that is expected to keep him out past the NBA's Feb. 20 trade deadline.

Pau Gasol: Report: Pau trade talks w/ Suns aren't over
Pau Gasol - F/C - LAK - Feb. 5 - 11:00 am et
The Lakers reportedly "do not believe talks with Phoenix for [Pau] Gasol are over," according to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN Los Angeles.
L.A. expects to have more talks with the Suns and other teams up until the Feb. 20 trade deadline. Phoenix recently halted discussions because the Lakers were asking for too much in return for Gasol, whose strained groin will keep him out until at least Feb. 19. Feb. 5 - 11:00 am et

Blake's triple-double lifts Lakers to unlikely win
(AFP) – 6 minutes ago
Cleveland — Steve Blake, in his second game back from an elbow injury, notched a triple-double as the Los Angeles Lakers beat Cleveland 119-108 to snap a seven-game NBA skid.
Ryan Kelly on Wednesday scored a career-high 26 points for the injury-ravaged Lakers, who were coming off a 109-99 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves in Minneapolis on Tuesday.
That defeat marked Blake's first game since he suffered a torn elbow ligament in December -- and he suffered a ruptured eardrum early in the contest when he took an inadvertent blow to the ear.
But Blake put it all behind him on Wednesday, scoring 11 points with 15 assists and 10 rebounds to lead the short-handed Lakers to an unlikely victory.
The Lakers also got a solid effort from Jordan Farmer, playing for the first time since New Year's Eve, who made five three-pointers in a 21-point effort. He also handed out five assists before departing the game with a sore calf.
Wesley Johnson contributed 20 points and nine rebounds for a Lakers team that had just eight players in uniform.
Superstar Kobe Bryant remains sidelined with a broken bone in his left knee. Big man Pau Gasol also missed the current three-game road trip as he nurses a groin injury.

Robert Sacre Remains in Lakers Game with 6 Fouls Due to Bizarre NBA Rule
By Tyler Conway , Featured Columnist Feb 5, 2014
The Lakers recorded a 119-108 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night despite suiting up just eight players, but it's the five players who were on the floor when the clock struck zero that are making headlines.

With 3:31 remaining in the fourth quarter, center Robert Sacre recorded his sixth foul of the game on a C.J. Miles field-goal attempt. Sacre, in typical situations, would have been disqualified from returning.

However, the Lakers had no one to replace him. Chris Kaman already fouled out, Jordan Farmar and Nick Young suffered in-game injuries, and the remaining four players on the Lakers' active roster were inactive due to injury or rest. As noted by the Los Angeles Daily News' Mark Medina, the bizarre situation allowed Sacre to stay in the game thanks to a seldom-used NBA rule that requires both teams to have five players on the floor:

Kelly, Blake help Lakers clip Cavs, end skid
Published February 05, 2014Sports Network
Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Kelly amassed a career-high 26 points, Steve Blake recorded a triple-double and the Los Angeles Lakers put an end to a seven-game losing streak with a 119-108 victory over the also- slumping Cleveland Cavaliers at Quicken Loans Arena.

Blake racked up 11 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds in his second game back from an elbow injury, and he and Kelly were two of several Lakers to step up their production with the team fielding a shorthanded roster.

Jordan Farmar, playing for the first time since New Year's Eve, drained five 3-pointers in a 21-point, eight-assist effort, while Wesley Johnson contributed 20 points and nine rebounds for a Los Angeles squad that dressed just eight players with Pau Gasol (groin), Jodie Meeks (ankle) and Jordan Hill (cervical strain) out with injuries and point guard Steve Nash held out in the second test of a back-to-back.

The Lakers ran out of players and nearly blew a 29-point lead before a pair of late Steve Blake three-pointers ended the Cleveland Cavaliers' rally and helped secure a 119-108 victory on Wednesday night.

Playing on the second night of back-to-back games, without Kobe Bryant (knee), Pau Gasol (groin), Steve Nash (resting), Jodie Meeks (ankle), Jordan Hill (cervical strain) and Xavier Henry (knee) -- the Lakers lost two more players against Cleveland.

Nick Young left the game early with a knee injury. Jordan Farmar was unable to finish the game with a calf injury. Chris Kaman then fouled out, leaving the Lakers with five available players: Steve Blake, Kendall Marshall, Wesley Johnson, Ryan Kelly and Robert Sacre.

The Lakers tried to hold onto their double-digit lead, but Cleveland closed its deficit to six points with 1:17 left on the clock.

Magic Johnson says he believes he can make Sparks profitable

Magic Johnson is joined by former Sparks player Lisa Leslie after a news conference Wednesday at Staples Center to announce the purchase of the WNBA team by a group that includes Johnson. (Nick Ut / Associated Press / February 5, 2014)
By Melissa Rohlin
February 5, 2014, 1:56 p.m.

Magic Johnson said Wednesday that he believes that his investment group can turn the Sparks into a profitable WNBA team.

"We know what we're up against and that's OK," Johnson said. "We love challenges. We feel, yes, we're going to eventually make a profit, no question about it. That's why we're in business, to make a profit."

The investment group, led by Lakers legend Johnson and Dodgers controlling owner Mark Walter, just purchased the Sparks from Paula Madison and her family-owned business after Madison announced in December that her firm could no longer afford to continue underwriting the team.

Madison said Williams Group Holdings had lost nearly $12 million on the team over the last seven years, and was projected to lose more than $1 million in the 2014 season.

Johnson said he planned to turn things around in a similar way to how he helped transform the Dodgers.

"We want to increase the fan experience because that's what we did for the Dodgers, that's why we're No. 1 in MLB in attendance," Johnson said.

Johnson said that the Sparks would continue to play at Staples Center and all of the team's staff, including General Manager Penny Toler and Coach Carol Ross, would be retained.

"Everything is going to stay in place until we see how we can make it better," Johnson said.

Johnson declined to say how much money his group paid for the Sparks, but that he was "happy" about the price. He added that his group assumed all of the team's debt.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Jarrett Jack stood in front of a reporters and spoke softly and sternly.

"It's unacceptable,'' the Cavaliers starting point guard said Wednesday night at The Q.

That is one thing everyone connected with the Cavs can agree on.

In a performance that almost defies description, the Cavaliers embarrassed themselves for three quarters and managed to lose, 119-108, to a Los Angeles Lakers team that had lost seven straight games and finished this game with five healthy players.

Oh, some of the sting was taken out after Cleveland cut a 29-point first-half lead to 114-108 after two free throws by rookie Anthony Bennett with 1:17 left in the fourth quarter. But a 3-pointer by Steve Blake, playing with a ruptured ear drum suffered at Minnesota on Tuesday night, restored the Lakers lead to 117-108 with 56.7 seconds left and the Lakers held on to snap a seven-game losing streak and improve to 17-32. Rookie Ryan Kelly scored a career-high 26 points.

Lakers' Nick Young to undergo MRI

CLEVELAND - Los Angeles Lakers guard Nick Young will receive an MRI on Thursday after twisting his left knee in the first half of the Lakers' 119-108 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday.

Young, the Lakers' second-leading scorer this season with a 16.9 points per game average coming into Wednesday, suffered the injury with 2:16 remaining in the first half when he was fouled by the Cavaliers' C.J. Miles on a fastbreak lay-up attempt. The Lakers were up 64-44 at the time.

"I planted wrong," said Young after finishing with six points, four rebounds and four assists and not playing in the second half. "We'll see what happens. Hope for the best, really."

Young said he "couldn't move" on his left leg and decided to end his night early. He did not require crutches when he left Quicken Loans Arena after the game, however.

Young was not pleased with how Miles wrapped him up when he fouled him, causing Young to collide with the stanchion under the basket.

"They was down 30, man, they could have let me get that layup," Young said.

If Young is unable to play against the Philadelphia 76ers, the Lakers could struggle to field a full roster once again after finishing the Cleveland game with just four eligible players on the court, plus Robert Sacre who was allowed to stay in as the team's fifth player after fouling out, costing L.A. a technical foul.

Jordan Farmar, who played for the first time since Dec. 31, was held out of the end of Cavs game with a cramp in his left calf which led to tightness in his left hamstring.

There should be some kind of extra penalty to players who cause an injury to an opponent. The foot that was planted under Kobe last year may have cost us two seasons. Last game it was Meeks landing on a foot planted below him. Now it is Young's turn.
